The Dilemma

Kelly She walked out of the Lombardi Plaza and headed straight to her favourite Starbucks. Barbara was to meet her there. It had been a disastrous interview. She was so furious that she wanted to actually hit someone after the longest time of her life. She wasn’t a violent person and it scared her how much she wanted to take it out on her young, sexy interviewer. What would be the tattoo on his chest like? Was his olive complexion the same all over his body? *** sexy ***?? Where the f*ck did that come from? Ugggh! Her thoughts were playing havoc! The attraction and the anger for Lombardi Junior were a crazy and confusing mix. She ordered an Americano to go with her lemon cheese loaf. Nothing like a shot of sugar with her favourite brew to get rid of the blues. As she waited for her order to be ready, she thought about what she was going to do next. She loved her cosy little apartment. It was a bit dear in rent but was right in the heart of the city, which meant she could reach her helipad in good time. Now she would have to look for a new apartment! Her savings were enough to last her for a couple of months but what was she going to do next? The future looked so uncertain with no job in hand. She didn't even have any interviews lined up. And her job profile wasn't very common. Also, her gender worked against it. No one explicitly discriminated against her, except Lombardi Jr today, she shrugged. It was illegal. But most people tended to trust male pilots. She rolled her eyes. Her being at the top of her flying school did not matter here. It was a silent camaraderie that men shared. Some jobs were more testosterone oriented! She sighed. She hadn’t been served an eviction notice yet, but with Alex’s connections, she knew it would be an eventuality. She went over to the counter to collect her order when her name was called. A miniature smiley on her coffee mug made her smile too and she glanced at the server. He had a genuine smile on his face as he waved at her. She waved back. Starbucks and their little messages, she shook her head and sat back to enjoy her coffee. The server's smile was contagious and made her relax a little as she took her first sip. Barbara hadn't arrived yet. The girl could be tardy at times especially when her fiance was around. Her phone buzzed in her handbag. It was still in silent mode since she did not want it to ring in the interview. It was an unknown number. She attended and was greeted by Bill's voice. "Kelly! I heard that you declined the offer to join us. Is it the money? We can offer you a better pay scale if that's what is stopping you from accepting our offer." Bill's even voice said, without letting any emotions spill through. Kelly thought about it. Did Bill really like her so much? She had thought that he calculated the value of a person by net worth. Maybe she had misunderstood. "No. It's not like that. The money is alright. I don't think I am a good fit to work for the Lombardis." He laughed. "I thought so! You are the best fit. Trust me. I know my people. I believe you are the one who should be flying that machine and no one else. And although I don't know what really happened with Leo, I think he might be the reason why you are refusing to work with us." Kelly sighed. Did she have to reply to that? She kept mum and allowed Bill to continue. "This chopper is going to fly my family. You must already know that we lost Riccardo. I would not want to lose any one else and I know you will do your best to save them. Also, Leo needs to learn that money isn't the only thing that drives people. I see that passion in you! Please tell me what I would need to so to get you on board?" This time she had to interrupt. "I did not really like the attitude of My Lombardi Junior. I am sorry. I don't think I should be the one flying your chopper." Bill went silent at the other end. This time when e spike his easy demeanour was gone. "Kelly, I can not make you accept an offer, but I would really like you to consider it. You can't always make decisions based on the nature of people or on whether you like someone or not. Leo can be rude and arrogant, but he would never knowingly hurt a person. You don't really have any other job right now, your landlord is preparing his eviction notice and your hot headed ex- boyfriend is going to make your life a living hell. If you work for us, none of this would happen. I promise you, I have connections that can avoid all of this and I don't mind using them for you. I will be waiting for you to join your work tomorrow at Belmont Park heliport. I am going to be your first passenger." He disconnected. Kelly glared at her phone not able to remember when she had said yes to the job. Bill was right Alex was an a*sshole. Two days back he had created a horrible scene at her apartment. She had allowed him in as he had insisted that he was there to return her stuff, instead, the bastard had tried to hit her. He had damaged the furniture and the kitchen counter in his attempt to beat the s**t out of her. If it wasn't fro Belinda's timely intervention, Kelly would have been in the hospital now. Belinda was her friend from the NYPD. She had talked Kelly out of pressing charges as cops stood up for their own. Her attempt at filing charges would have brought more flak and would have damaged her career. She hated the way things were developing around her. Could Bill actually keep Alex off her back? Should she really say no to such security? She wouldn't really be working only for Lombardi Junior. If her luck worked well, she might even be able to avoid him. They owned this aviation company and as she understood the terms of the contract, she would be ferrying other VVIP passengers too. It wasn't like she was their private chopper pilot. Should she accept the offer? ***
