ALLISON'S POV
The pain was unbearable. It felt like claws were tearing down my heart. As I bent in the shadows of the castle hallway, I could feel my wolf crying out for them, for my mates. But no matter how deeply I yearned, how much I longed to be with Allen and Alex, it felt like the universe had thrown me into an unending nightmare.
Wendy had somehow tricked them—convinced the twins she was their mate. And here I was, helpless. I was forced to watch from afar as she got every bit of their affection.
I couldn’t understand how it had all gone so wrong. Years ago, Wendy had been my friend. We promised to always protect each other. She was my sister. She was someone I trusted with secrets and shared laughs with. But now…now she’d taken everything from me.
There, across the dining hall, I could see them: Wendy was at the center of attention. She had her hand casually resting on Allen’s shoulder. She smiled at him as her fingers traced small circles on his skin, while Alex leaned in to whisper something in her ear. They looked happy. They looked…perfect. And I was invisible.
That should be me.
During dinners, I stood with the other maids, always a few paces behind, doing my duty as expected. No one noticed me in the background. How could they? Wendy's smile stole all the attention. She’d lean over, kiss them both as if she were truly their fated one. The twins would kiss her, calling her their queen, their future Luna. The words stabbed at my heart and it twisted deeper each time.
How could they not feel it? Couldn't they feel the connection I felt every time I was near them? The bond between us was real and strong. I was sure of it. They were probably just confused.
A few days ago, I’d almost told Allen about it. He’d been in the bathroom taking a bath and I'd prepared his water for him. The air between us had grown so charged I could barely breathe. We stared at each other like we were the only ones in the world. He kept looking at me. He thought I didn't notice but I did.
My wolf was begging to get closer to him, to tell him the truth, but when I looked up, I’d only seen the harsh look in his eyes. He’d pulled himself back and instead, he said harsh words to me. He built walls that kept me out, and any words I might’ve spoken died on my lips. I left as soon as he told me too. I clung on to the hope that somehow, they’d realize who I was to them.
But today…today I couldn’t take it anymore. Every time I tried to avoid them, fate seemed to throw them in my path. It seemed like the moon goddess was taunting me, reminding me of what could have been mine. The agony of seeing them, feeling the pull, yet knowing they were out of reach, was too much to bear.
I couldn't take it anymore. The pain was too much. I went to find Wendy. I thought maybe I could reason with her, beg her to stop the act. I walked to her room and opened the door.
“Wendy,” I started, barely holding back the tears. “I can’t do this anymore. Watching you with them, seeing them look at you the way they should be looking at me… it’s killing me.”
Wendy turned to face me. Surprisingly, her expression was soft. For a second, I thought maybe I saw a flicker of the friend I once knew.
“Allison,” she said, coming closer to me “I understand this is hard. But this is our chance to start over, to live better lives. You just have to keep it together a little longer. They’ll never know the truth if you keep your mouth shut.”
I could barely believe what I was hearing. “You lied to them, Wendy! They think you’re their mate, and they adore you. You’ve taken everything from me!”
A twisted smirk crossed her lips. “Is it so hard to see me happy for once, Allison? You always had everything I wanted. Now it’s my turn. Don’t say anything. Do you hear me? Or you’ll regret it.”
Her voice turned hard. I opened my mouth to respond, but just then, Alpha Allen walked into the room. Instantly, his presence filled the space with his commanding aura. Wendy immediately shifted into an act.
“Get out, Allison!” she shrieked "You're worthless and you always destroy everything"
Before I could even react, her hand came down hard on my face. She slapped me hard. I flinched, looking at her in shock. I knew it was all an act, but that didn’t make it hurt any less.
“Go,” she hissed through gritted teeth. Her eyes told me everything she couldn’t say in front of him. I stumbled back. The taste of betrayal was bitter on my tongue. I could feel Allen’s hard gaze on me as I left, and my heart twisted painfully, knowing he was going to be with her.
I stumbled out of the room. I cried as I felt my cheek still burning. My heart was shattered. But just as I turned the corner, I heard hurried footsteps behind me. Looking back, I saw Alex walking toward Wendy’s room.
I knew what would happen next. They would be together, and I would be forced to witness the bond that was meant to be mine.
But I couldn’t help it. Some part of me lingered outside the door, pressing myself against the cold wall. Then I heard it—a soft, breathless moan, followed by Alex’s low murmur. My heart shattered into pieces I wasn’t sure could ever be put back together again.
The tears spilled down my cheeks as I clamped my hands over my ears, trying to block out the sounds, but they only seemed to echo louder. Every laugh, every gasp felt like a nail driven deeper into my soul. And as I ran down the hallway, there was a deep suffocating pain in my chest.
My wolf whimpered, broken and lost, mourning the bond with our mates that we would never feel.
