The challenge of the moon

(Aria) The full moon hung like a silver coin above the ceremonial ring. Every wolf in the pack had gathered in the clearing, their faces lit by torches planted around the ancient stone circle. I could smell their excitement, their anticipation. Some wanted to see me win. Others were hoping Ashley would put me in my place. I stood at the edge of the ring, wearing simple black workout clothes. No jewelry, no decorations, nothing that could be grabbed or used against me. My hair was braided back tight against my skull. I'd spent the entire day preparing for this fight, going over every technique I knew, every weakness I'd noticed in Ashley's fighting style. Across the ring, Ashley waited in a flowing white dress that made her look innocent and pure. She'd played the victim all day, telling anyone who would listen how I'd stolen her happiness and now wanted to destroy her completely. Kael stood with the council members at the north side of the ring. His face was hard as stone, but I could feel his worry through our bond. He'd tried to talk me out of this fight three times today. I'd refused each time. "This is a formal challenge," Beta Rowan announced to the crowd. "Single combat between Luna Aria Blackwood and Ashley Morrison. The rules are simple. Fight until one submits or cannot continue. No weapons. No interference from outside the ring." "What happens to the loser?" someone called from the crowd. "The terms were set yesterday," Rowan replied. "If Ashley wins, the Luna leaves the pack forever. If Luna Aria wins, Ashley acknowledges her authority and ends her opposition." A murmur ran through the crowd. These were high stakes for a simple challenge fight. Daniel pushed through the pack members to stand at the front. He'd brought his supporters with him, and they were all watching me with cold expressions. He caught my eye across the ring and shook his head slowly, like he was disappointed in me. "You sure about this, Aria?" he called out. "It's not too late to back down." "I'm sure," I called back. "I'm going to destroy you," Ashley said, stepping into the ring. Her voice carried to the crowd. "You were never strong enough for Daniel. What makes you think you're strong enough to be Luna?" "Let's find out," I said, following her into the circle. The stone ring was about twenty feet across, big enough to move but small enough that there was nowhere to run. Old runes were carved into the stones, symbols of the Moon Goddess and the ancient laws that governed our kind. "Shift when ready," Beta Rowan called. I closed my eyes and let Ember come forward. The change felt smooth, natural, like my wolf form was becoming more comfortable each time. When I opened my golden eyes, Silk was already waiting for me. Silk circled me slowly, trying to use her advantage to intimidate me. Her lips were pulled back in a snarl, showing teeth that could tear through flesh and bone. The crowd was getting louder, some cheering for her, others for me. I stayed in the center of the ring, turning to keep her in front of me. Let her waste energy circling. Let her think she was in control. When she finally attacked, it was fast and brutal. Silk launched herself across the ring, going straight for my throat with those massive jaws. Most wolves would have tried to dodge backward, giving her room to land and reposition. I went forward instead. The move caught her off guard. Instead of meeting her head on, I dropped low and rolled under her leap, coming up behind her before she could turn. My teeth found the back of her leg, just above the joint, and I bit down hard. Silk howled and spun around, her claws raking across my shoulder as she tried to dislodge me. The crowd was on its feet now, shouting and cheering. I could hear Daniel yelling Ashley's name. I let go and backed away, blood running from the scratches on my shoulder. But Silk was limping now, favoring the leg I'd bitten. First blood to me. She snarled and came at me again, this time more careful. She feinted left, then right, trying to confuse me before striking. It was a good technique against most opponents. But I'd grown up fighting wolves bigger than me. Stronger than me. Meaner than me. The pack kids had never let me forget I was an orphan, that I didn't belong. They'd taught me to fight dirty, to use speed and intelligence when I didn't have size or strength. Silk thought she was fighting another pampered pack princess. She was wrong. When she committed to her next attack, I was ready. Instead of trying to block or dodge, I met her charge head on. We collided in the middle of the ring, both wolves going down in a tangle of fur and teeth and claws. This was where her size should have given her the advantage. She was stronger, heavier, better positioned to pin me down. But rolling around on the ground fighting wasn't about position. It was about desperation. About who wanted it more. And I wanted it more. I twisted under her, got my back legs against her belly, and kicked hard. The move sent her flying backward, giving me space to get back on my feet. She landed awkwardly, rolling twice before coming up. Now she was angry. The careful strategy was gone, replaced by pure rage. She charged again, no technique, just fury and claws and teeth. That's when I used the move Kael's old trainer had taught me when I was sixteen. The one that had gotten me in trouble for using it against another trainee. The one they'd called too dangerous for practice fights. As Silk came at me, I dropped to my belly and rolled to the side. When she passed over me, I twisted and drove my shoulder up into her ribs as hard as I could. The impact lifted her off her feet and sent her crashing into the stone boundary of the ring. She hit the carved runes with a sound like breaking bones and collapsed in a heap. The crowd went dead silent. Silk tried to get up, shaking her head to clear it. I could see her legs trembling with the effort. Blood was running from her mouth where she'd bitten her own tongue. That's when she decided to cheat. Pack law was clear about challenge fights. Teeth and normal claws only. No enhanced claws, no intentional crippling moves, no attacks designed to cause permanent damage. Silk extended her claws to their full length, the tips glowing with an unnatural sharpness that meant she was using power she shouldn't have. It was illegal, dangerous, and could kill me if she landed a hit to the throat. She came at me one last time, those enhanced claws aimed straight at my neck. I'd been waiting for this moment. The moment when Ashley would show her true nature to the entire pack. Instead of dodging, I grabbed her front legs as she leaped and used her own momentum to flip her over my head. She landed hard on her back, and before she could recover, I was on top of her with my teeth at her throat. But I didn't bite down. Instead, I pressed just hard enough to let her feel how easily I could end this. The message was clear. I could have killed her. I chose not to. Silk went limp under me, the fight gone out of her completely. She shifted back to human form, gasping and crying, her face bloody and her eyes unfocused. I shifted back as well, standing over her naked form in the middle of the ring. "Do you yield?" I asked, loud enough for the entire pack to hear. Ashley tried to speak but only managed a whimper. She nodded frantically. "Say it," I commanded, using my Luna voice for the first time in public. "I yield," she whispered. "Louder." "I yield!" she screamed. "I yield to Luna Aria!" The crowd erupted. Cheers, howls, stamping feet. Even some of Daniel's supporters looked impressed despite themselves. They'd just watched their new Luna systematically dismantle a larger opponent and then show mercy when she could have killed. I looked around the ring, meeting the eyes of every pack member I could see. "Does anyone else question my right to be your Luna?" Silence. "Good," I said. Then I walked over to where Kael was standing. Without a word, he stepped into the ring and pulled me against him. In front of the entire pack, he kissed me hard and possessive, marking me as his in the most public way possible. "My Luna," he said when we broke apart, his voice carrying across the clearing. "My mate. My equal." The pack howled their approval. The sound filled the night air, declaring to every wolf for miles around that the Moonridge Pack had a new Luna, and she was not to be underestimated. As the crowd began to disperse, still talking excitedly about what they'd witnessed, I looked back at Ashley. She was sitting in the dirt, still naked and bleeding, staring at me with undisguised hatred. "This isn't over," she mouthed silently. Maybe not. But tonight, it was enough that the pack had seen their Luna's strength. Later that evening, after the celebrating died down, I was in our room getting cleaned up when Kael found me. "How do you feel?" he asked, checking the scratches on my shoulder. "Like I can actually do this job," I said honestly. "You can. You proved that tonight." Through the window, I could see two figures meeting in the shadows near the tree line. Daniel and Ashley, huddled together, talking in urgent whispers. Planning their next move, no doubt. Let them plan. Tonight had shown me something important. I was stronger than they thought. Stronger than I'd thought. And I was just getting started. The pack had seen their Luna's strength tonight. Soon, they'd see her intelligence too. Whatever Daniel and Ashley were planning, I'd be ready.
