11: Between Friends
IT was just after seven o'clock. Fells sat at the desk in the corner of his sitting-room. He began to write a letter:
Dear Tangier,
Thank you very much for your letter. Of course you're absolutely right. I had a talk with Q. yesterday. He told me all about you. He's given me a pretty good idea as to why he advised you to get away from London. I think he was quite right.
He was right in thinking that it would be good if, just now, you and I didn't see very much of each other. He thought that my attitude of mind towards the job I'm on might be affected by the fact that I'm in love with you. But he was wrong there.
I have spent so many years at this work. I've got so used to it, and I realise so strongly how much depends on Q. being successful, that I shouldn't allow
