Chapter Seven Suzie, in her usual maid’s uniform, showed the guests in as they arrived. First was a couple, which Emma thought ill-matched: a middle-aged man, decidedly overweight and balding, with a red face, and an exquisitely pretty girl barely out of her teens. Master introduced them as George and Primrose. Master had obviously not encountered Primrose before and enquired about her. “She’s a catch, isn’t she?” George said proudly. “I’ve only just acquired her.” He made it sound like something he’d bought, like a new car. Primrose said nothing, looking down at the floor. She wore a chiffon dress with a flower pattern, very short, showing a good deal of her legs, in white stockings.
