Lily
“I am your mate, after all. And the mother of your son…”
Mate…mate…mother…the words kept hurling in my head as I stood outside, shaking from head to toe. I was frozen, like literally my legs felt like someone had glued them to the floor as the revelation landed.
“I am glad I never found a mate, Lily. Because then I could have never found you…”
“This is Owen…I rescued the poor boy from rogues. He is an orphan, but from today, maybe he can fill the void in our lives? Maybe he can be our son?”
Lies. One after another…everything was a lie. My marriage was a lie. My relationship, the marriage, the foundation I thought Rowan and I had built over the years…all of it was a big f*****g lie.
My existence in his life was a lie.
“I’m not pushing you away… oh f**k goddess, you know I can’t… You’re my mate. My fated mate,” Rowan’s voice came, thick with desire as he kept thrusting. I could literally hear the bed springs protesting against his aggression.
“Then why does she get everything?” Kara whimpered. “Why do I have to stay hidden? Why does she get to be Luna when I’m the one you love?”
“You are the only woman I have ever loved, Lily.”
Lies, all lies. And like an utter i***t, I had believed him, over and over again, for years. I wasn’t sure who I hated more at the moment–Rowan and Kara for this betrayal or me for being so stupid and pathetically naive.
“Stop,” he growled with impatience. “Stop talking about her. You are ruining the moment. You know the truth, you’re my mate, and you are the one I love. I haven’t touched her in more than a year as I promised. What else do you need?”
A soft, desperate moan escaped Kara, followed by the wet sound of a hurried kiss. The bed springs screamed again in protest beneath their shifted weight.
“She is just for the show, Kara,” he continued between each thrust. “You know what my father demanded. He forced me to marry that woman to keep the lineage ‘pure.’ Lily was convenient. She is respectable, obedient, and easily controlled, and it’s an advantage for us. We could never have carried on like this if she weren’t that stupid.”
Tears rolled down my eyes, not just from his betrayal but from sheer humiliation. Love was a far cry; he barely even respected me, and I was the woman he publicly married, marked and crowned as Luna. All so he could continue to be with his fated mate without ruining his image or standing. The pain hit so hard that it felt like physical cramps in my body.
“f**k…” Rowan hissed, the groaning noise of the springs and the banging headboard finally coming to a halt. “Oh, Kara, you never disappoint, baby.”
I don’t know why I was still standing here, but I just couldn’t find the strength to move.
“Do you really mean it? That she means nothing?” Kara demanded again.
“If she meant anything to me, why would I go to all the lengths I did?” Rowan responded, sounding impatient now. “Only so that your son…our son could become the future heir of the pack did I make sure Lily never conceived.” I froze at the words.
What?
“It wasn’t easy feeding her all those contraceptives month after month,” Rowan continued. “I had to make arrangements with the old pack doctor, convince her to drink it every month on time so she doesn’t conceive. Even when I had pretended to try having a baby, I had always ensured I never came inside her just to be sure. And it’s only because Lily is that stupid that she never understood.”
He said all of that so casually, like he was talking about how he likes his eggs for breakfast and not about how he took away my motherhood, how he deliberately never let me conceive, and then made it seem like I was the problem, I was…infertile.
And in that moment, something shifted inside me. My vision cleared, the hot haze of shame replaced by a cold, consuming fury. I hadn't betrayed him. He had stolen years of my life. My guilt vanished, instantly replaced by a cold, burning rage as I finally found the strength to storm inside.
They scrambled apart in the blink, Kara shrieking and clutching the sheets while Rowan's eyes widened in shock. But his surprise lasted only a heartbeat before his face hardened into the familiar mask of Alpha arrogance.
He did not even bother to deny the scene–the crumpled bedsheet, the disgusting scent of s*x, or his bone-chilling confession. Instead, his jaw flexed with pure, entitled irritation.
"Lily," he began, trying for a tone of weary patience. "Let's not do this here. Let's talk later. I can explain... just... please, just wait outside, and we will talk somewhere else." He was trying to command me out of the room, to gain control over me like he always did with his Alpha dominance.
I ignored his plea.
“I want a divorce,” I said. No questions asked, no demands, no accusations or anything. I don’t think I had the strength left for that.
"A divorce?" Rowan exploded immediately, taking a threatening step toward me. "Are you kidding me? You want to throw away everything I gave you? You are the Luna! You are bound to your pack duties and to me. You will not ruin my image for some childish outburst!"
I couldn’t believe him. Was he the same man who I had married? The same man I thought was my knight-in-shining armor? Because the person standing in front of me…he was a monster. A f*****g, vile monster.
“You already don’t have a very good image amongst the pack, Rowan…if it weren’t for me,” I answered, and it amazed me and made me a little proud of how cold I sounded. “And my duty to you and pack is done starting this very moment…”
His entitlement, his complete lack of remorse, severed the last remaining thread of my obligation to him. He was nothing but a manipulative motherfucker. I didn't wait for him to retaliate or try to stop me. I turned my heels and walked out.
Tears blurred my vision as I shoved the report in my pocket. Rowan no longer needed to know the truth. He didn’t deserve it. And after today, I had to make sure that when this baby comes, I was far far away from this bastard.
Maybe this baby indeed was a blessing? Because if I had found this out in any other circumstance, I would have never found the strength to fight back. But now I had a reason.
My baby.
I will make sure justice is served for every wrongdoing and then get out of here as soon as possible before Rowan can find out I was pregnant.
I wasn’t expecting to see the man, the kind stranger whose child I was carrying, ever again. Not after the way I ran away the next morning before he could even wake up. It was just me and the little one on our own, and that was fine. However, little did I know…
He was already coming for me…and much sooner than I expected.
