CHAPTER 7Camilla stood staring at the window feeling as though she was turned to stone. She struggled to cry for help, but her voice had ceased to obey her commands. Then suddenly sheer terror took hold of her and with an inarticulate cry she pulled open her bedchamber door and rushed into the passage. Without coherent thought, driven only by a wild desire to find assistance, she flung open the first door she came to. Hugo Cheverly was seated at a secrétaire. He had not undressed but had removed his coat, revealing a fine lawn shirt and his cravat, tied in the fashionable ‘waterfall’. Two tapers in pewter candlesticks were burning on the desk at which he was writing. He looked round as the door was flung open and seeing Camilla rose hastily to his feet. “Miss Lambourn!” he exclaimed.
