Chapter 6 The interview went pretty much as Spence had expected. Detectives Dean and Evans had him repeat everything he’d told them—over and over. Since he was telling them the truth, although it was obvious they didn’t believe him, his story stayed the same. “Did you talk with Mr. Vernon?” he asked at one point. “Not yet,” Evans replied, adding, “He didn’t answer the door. We’ll try again in the morning.” It was well after one when they printed out a copy of his statement and had him sign it. “You’re free to go,” Detective Dean said. “You’re not to leave town, and if you think of anything you forgot, call.” A police officer drove him home.
