Amethyst's POV "You're pregnant?" I muttered in shock, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried the weight of my disbelief. Ara froze in her spot, completely motionless, as I stood up abruptly with the pregnancy test clutched tightly in my hand. My mind raced with a thousand thoughts, but I forced myself to focus on her. "Amara," I called her name softly as I took cautious steps toward her, unsure of how to proceed. Ara's lips quivered before she crumpled to her knees, tears spilling down her cheeks in an uncontrollable torrent. Her sobs were loud, raw, filled with emotions I couldn't even begin to decipher. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't know it would lead to this. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to," she sobbed, her voice breaking with every word she uttered. Without hesitation, I knelt beside her, wrapping my arms around her shaking form. I pulled her close, allowing her to cry into my shoulder as I gently caressed her back, trying to soothe her despite the whirlwind of emotions inside me. I knew there was no point in forcing an explanation out of her tonight, or maybe even in the next few days. Ara was fragile right now, and the last thing I wanted was to push her away when she needed me the most. The weight of the situation pressed heavily on my chest. To think that Ara had gone through something like this alone, without confiding in me, was beyond comprehension. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry," she kept repeating, her sobs growing softer but no less painful. I ran my fingers through her hair, my voice gentle as I tried to comfort her. "Shhhh, it's okay. I'm here. I'm here, Ara. I'm here" I repeatedly assured her. She clung onto me as though I was her lifeline, her entire body trembling against mine. I held her for what felt like an eternity, waiting patiently for her sobs to subside. Waiting for her to calm down. Once she finally managed to calm down, her exhaustion evident, I carefully helped her to bed, tucking her in as she sniffled softly. Her eyes were bloodshot red from crying. "You're not going to interrogate me? Ask how, why, since when and who?" she asked hesitantly, her red-rimmed eyes looking up at me with uncertainty. I exhaled deeply, offering her a small reassuring smile. "Tell me when you're ready to tell me, Ara. You're already stressed out as is. Right now, you need to rest—for yourself and the baby." I told her with a sigh. She swallowed hard before whispering "Amy?" she said. "Yes?" I replied gently. "I'm scared" she admitted, her voice so small and fragile that my heart clenched. I sighed, sitting beside her on the bed and taking her hand in mine. "I'm sure you are. This isn't necessarily a simple matter" I told her" "But it's completely okay understandable to be scared. You have a little life growing inside you. That can be scary, I'm sure. But then you also have to remember that you have me, Ara. Always. No matter what." I reminded her Her lips trembled as she nodded. "Thank you." she said as another tear escaped her eye. I leaned in and gave her a kiss on her forehead before I reached for her hand gave it a gentle squeeze then wrapping her in another embrace. "There's no need to thank me, silly. I'm your big sister. I'll do anything and everything for you if I had to" I whispered. Amara hugged me tighter but she didn’t say anything else As I stepped out the room, I left the lights on before exiting—Ara had always hated the dark so I didn't turn it off. As I walked to my own room, exhaustion weighed heavily on my shoulders, but my mind refused to quiet down. The stress of the situation settled deep within me, and I knew that things would only get tougher from here. I sighed, stepping into the bathroom to take a hot shower, allowing the water to wash away some of my fatigue. At some point, I would have to tell Ady. There was no way we could keep something like this from him. He was going to be upset. Very upset. But just like me, I knew he would choose to stand by her side until the very end. Our parents might have been a disappointment, but at least I had siblings I could rely on. That was more than enough for me. With that final thought, I climbed into bed, mentally bracing myself for the challenges that lay ahead. A few hours later... The shrill sound of my alarm clock pulled me out of my restless sleep. I groaned but forced myself to get up immediately. There was no time to dwell on my exhaustion—I had work to do. After a quick shower, I got dressed and made my way to the kitchen. I decided to make pancakes and cut up some fresh fruits for breakfast. I didn’t usually eat breakfast, but today was different. I couldn’t let Ara eat alone, especially when she wasn’t just eating for herself anymore. The sound of hurried footsteps caught my attention just as I finished setting the table. A second later, Ara came barging out of the guest room and sprinted toward the bathroom. Morning sickness, I think. What a pity. I followed her and found her hunched over the toilet, emptying her stomach. I quickly stepped behind her, gathering her long hair to keep it out of the way as she threw up into the toilet. I made a mental note to do some research on pregnancy symptoms and prepare a proper grocery list later. My sister needed healthy meals, and I was going to make sure she had everything she needed while she went through this challenging phase in her life "I need to go to work, but if you want, I can ask Celine to come over and keep you company," I told Amara as she wiped her face with a towel. Ara hesitated before nodding. "I'd like that, but isn't Celine busy?" she asked hesitantly I chuckled. "Oh, I’m sure she’d love an excuse to take a break from juggling her many boyfriends." I said. Ara giggled despite herself. "Celine is still quite the player, huh?" "Quite? She’s a full-fledged professional at this point. It's her career by now" I teased, making her laugh more. We sat at the dining table, and I watched as Ara’s eyes lit up at the sight of the pancakes. "You sure know how to spoil me, Amy." she giggled. Seeing her smile again was a relief. "Well, someone has to," I replied with a smirk. As we ate, I decided to warn her about something. "I’ll have Celine come over, but if you don’t want her to know about the pregnancy yet, you need to be extra careful. That girl is as sharp as my kitchen knives when it comes to these things. Unlike me, she won’t wait until you’re ready to talk—she’ll pry the answers out of you one way or another" I told her. Ara paled slightly but nodded. "I’ll be extra careful." she said. "Good." I nodded. After breakfast, I got ready for work and gave her a reassuring hug before leaving. "I’ll be home by five. Want to come grocery shopping with me later?" I asked. "Yes, please," she answered eagerly. I smiled. "Alright. I’ll pick you up after work." I said and Ara nodded. As I walked out of my unit, I dialed Celine’s number. She picked up after a few rings, her voice groggy. "Hello? Celine speaking." I rolled my eyes. Of course she's sleeping in. "Amara is at my place. Can you keep her company today?" I asked her "Wait, what? Since when? Why is she there?" I sighed. "She showed up unexpectedly yesterday. I’ll explain later. I'm on my way to work so I don't really have the time nor the energy to be interrogated" I answered. "Alright. I’ll be there in an hour or two." "Thanks, Celine. I appreciate it" I thanked her. With that, I headed to work, knowing full well that the coming days were going to be anything but easy. But no matter what, I would be by Amara’s side. I had to be. I heaved a deep sigh. There was still so much to do, and the weight of my responsibilities pressed heavily on my shoulders. Celine and Ara had gone out to eat together after they spent some time in my place while I had completely forgotten about having lunch. It wasn’t the first time, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. At this point, skipping meals was just another part of my routine. I pushed through my workload as quickly as I could because of Amara, but if today had been any other regular day, I would’ve easily worked overnight as usual. Leaving my little sister with Celine for too long might not be the best idea, though. I love Celine, but she can be quite a bad influence, especially on my precious little sister. I wouldn't want that, now, would I? One Celine was already enough—I could barely handle her sometimes. Two of them? That was enough to drive me crazy. As soon as I wrapped up work, I grabbed my phone and dialed Celine’s number before starting my drive back to my unit. The call connected after just a few rings. “Heyyy~” Celine answered in a sing-song voice. “You’re still with Ara, right?” I asked immediately, not wasting any time. “So, I don’t even get a ‘hey’ back? You’re such an amazing best friend, Amethyst Wright,” she teased dramatically. I chuckled, shaking my head. “Heyyy, Celine. Now, where’s my sister?” I asked again, a smile playing on my lips. Celine giggled on the other end. “She’s getting ready to go out now. By the way, I can’t come with the both of you tonight—I have a dinner date planned.” “That’s fine. I’ll be there in five.” I said. “Oki! See you in a bit, bestie.” We ended the call, and I pressed my foot on the accelerator a little harder, eager to get back. Soon enough, I arrived at my unit, and Celine opened the door for me with her usual cheerful energy. “Hi, babe!” she greeted excitedly, pulling me in for a quick peck on the cheek. “Hey. How did your day go with Amara?” I asked as we stepped inside. “Fabulous. We went out for lunch and had a movie marathon together,” she said, her eyes twinkling with glee. I smiled warmly. “Thanks for keeping her company. I really really appreciate it” I told her. “Oh, please. It’s nothing. Ara is your sister which make her my sister too, duh” she said with a wink. It was true. To Celine, Amara had always been like a little sister ever since I introduced them. It was a comforting thought. On the other hand, Celine had never met Adrian. Their schedules and mine just haven't really aligned so we can all meet together. “Amy!” Amara’s voice rang out, and before I could react, she had launched herself at me in a tight hug. “Hey. Let’s go out now to the grocery store?” I suggested, and she nodded enthusiastically. “Let’s go,” I said, glancing at both her and Celine. As we stepped out of my unit and headed down to the parking lot, I turned to Celine. “I’ll drop you off at your place.” I offered since she doesn't usually bring a car with her. I assumed it's the same today Celine shook her head. “It’s okay, babe. I have my car with me. You girls go on ahead.” she said and she wrapped me in a tight hug before stepping back with a grin. “Be careful.” I reminded. “I will. Ciao!” she called out, waving us off before walking toward her car. It was an uncommon sight to see her bring her own car since most of the time, she just has her boyfriends drive her around. Amara and I got into my car, and I started the drive to the grocery store. “How was your day with Celine?” I asked, glancing briefly at my sister. “It was fun. I enjoyed being with her. She had so many things to talk about—like her boyfriends,” Amara giggled, shaking her head. I chuckled. Oh, Celine. “I’m glad you had fun.” I said. “I did,” she confirmed with a small smile. I took a deep breath, my grip tightening slightly on the wheel. “I’ll try to take a day off one of these days. We can do anything you want for the whole day.” I told her. I was busy—too busy—but I was willing to cram even more into my schedule just to ease Amara’s mind while she was here. She didn’t say it out loud, but I knew how tough this situation was for her. “Really?” she said, eyes widening in excitement. “Yes, really,” I reassured her with a smile, and she squealed in delight. We arrived at the grocery store and started shopping. I had already done my research earlier at work and had a list of a week’s worth of ingredients for Amara’s meals. Ara picked out things she liked as well—her cravings evident in her choices. “Ara, I forgot to ask—where’s your phone?” I questioned casually as we strolled through the aisles. “I...uhm...I disabled it after I called you,” she said nervously. I nodded in understanding. “You know that’s not enough, right? I’m sure our parents will try to track your number and your phone, and they’ll see you called me. When we get home, I’ll erase your number’s call history. I’ll also buy you a new phone and get you a new number.” Ara looked at me, stunned. I chuckled. “Been there, done that. It’s based on experience, you know?” I said with a playful wink, making her laugh. “Only Ady will know where you are for the time being. He can handle our parents for a while, so they don’t send an entire search party after you.” I assured her. She nodded slowly, and her expression softened. “I’m sorry, Amy. For causing you so much trouble and inconvenience” she said apologetically. I chuckled and shook my head. “Don’t be, Ara. You’re my responsibility now—and so is that little bean inside you ” I said, pointing at her stomach. Ara’s eyes welled up with tears, and before I could react, she threw her arms around me in a tight hug. I held her close, rubbing soothing circles on her back. Whatever happens, I’ll protect them both. For now, this is the plan I’ve come up with.
