What she missed

*Dylan* The aroma of smoky barbecue wafts through the air, mingling with the heady scent of fresh flowers and a hint of something sweet from the dessert table. I take a bite of the tender brisket, savoring the explosion of flavors as I lean back in my chair, watching the festivities unfold around me. This, I have missed while in England. They have a lot of great things, but there is nothing like a club barbeque. It’s a beautiful evening, the kind that reminds me of lazy summer days spent with family, and yet, I can’t shake the lingering thrill of my earlier encounter with Tommy. “Isn’t this wonderful, sweetheart?” My mom, Sadie, beams at me, her eyes sparkling with joy. She’s always been the heart of our family and the club, radiating warmth and love in every direction. “I’m so glad you could make it home for the wedding. It’s been too long since we’ve all gathered like this.” I smile back, feeling a rush of gratitude. “Yeah, it really is nice. The club sure knows how to throw a party.” I take another bite, relishing the smoky flavor, and glance over at the dance floor where a few of the younger bikers are showing off their moves. “And the food? Definitely a highlight.” Mom laughs, her laughter rich and infectious. “Oh, you know how much I love a good barbecue! But more than anything, I just love having you back home. You’re always so busy with school and your… projects.” She glances at me knowingly, her tone shifting slightly as she leans in. “How’s that criminal forensics major treating you?” I roll my eyes playfully, a smirk on my lips. “It’s fascinating, Mom. I swear, I could analyze crime scenes for hours. It’s like a puzzle where every clue matters. But you know, I’m still figuring out how to navigate the ‘real world’ while balancing school.” She nods enthusiastically, her pride evident. “You’ve always been brilliant, Dylan. Your dad and I knew you’d excel at anything you set your mind to, even if it’s a little unorthodox compared to what we expected.” Her eyes glimmer with a mix of admiration and concern. “Just remember to take care of yourself, okay? You don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.” I take a moment, contemplating my mother’s words. “I know, Mom. It’s just… sometimes I feel like I’m still that little girl everyone wants to protect. And I hate it. I want to be seen as capable, not just the ‘princess’ everyone thinks I am.” Meeting Tommy without him knowing who I was? It felt liberating. Like I could be just me, without any labels. Mom’s expression softens, and she reaches across the table, squeezing my hand. “I understand, honey. But you are so much more than just your father’s little girl. You’re smart, talented, and brave. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. And if you ever feel trapped, you can always talk to me. I’m here for you.” “I appreciate that, Mom,” I say, my voice sincere. I scan the crowd, catching a glimpse of Tommy as he mingles with some of the other bikers. He looks so out of place and yet somehow intriguing, like a canvas waiting for the right artist to bring it to life. “So Tommy, he is new to the club right..: talked to him earlier, he seems nice.” Mom follows my gaze, a knowing smile creeping onto her face. “Ah, Tommy? I saw how you were teasing him. He seemed taken aback, but there’s something about the way he looks at you, Dylan. I could see it from across the lawn. You might have sparked a little curiosity in him. Be careful, I am not sure your father would appreciate.” I can’t help but chuckle, the thought of Tommy’s bewilderment making me giddy. “Curiosity is one way to put it.” I sigh. “Dad would never approve of any guy if he showed me interest.” “He just wants to protect you, sweetheart,” she says softly, her voice laced with gentle wisdom. “People can surprise you, especially when you least expect it. Sometimes, the ones we assume will be easy to read turn out to be the most complex.” “Yeah, I get that,” I reply, taking a sip of my sweet iced tea. “I’m just tired of everyone treating me like I’m fragile. I want to be seen as someone who can handle herself, who can make her own choices. And for once, it felt good to be unpredictable.” “Then be unpredictable, but don’t forget the impact you have on others,” she advises, her gaze steady and reassuring. “You have a way of lighting up a room, Dylan. Just be mindful of how your light affects those around you.” I nod, absorbing her words. “I will, Mom. I promise.” As I glance back at Tommy. Why does my dad have a problem if I want to date a biker? I mean he talked mom i to marrying one, so Why would it not be good enough for me. “Want to dance?” I ask, suddenly feeling a surge of energy. “I need to shake off this serious talk.” Mom chuckles, her eyes lighting up. “Absolutely! Let’s go show them how it’s done!” As we rise from the table, I catch one last glimpse of Tommy. He’s watching us, a mix of confusion and intrigue dancing in his eyes. I can’t help but grin. I would actually like to get to know him better.
