Morgan Pov
I paced the guest room for the hundredth time today. Surely I was only minutes or hours away from wearing a path in the carpeting. It had been an entire week since I was attacked by the rogues. An entire week since I started to be driven insane by being locked in a room.
Some would call me lucky to be waited on hand and foot by the servants, but it was maddening to not be able to do anything on my own. I felt like a caged animal, sitting around until it was feeding time. Even when the maids did come into the room to do cleaning or bring me my meals, they weren't allowed to speak with me.
In this guest room, I was on my own. I couldn't confide in anyone about this situation. About how I was missing my friends and family back home. About being mated to the damn alpha of this pack.
He hadn't stopped by the guest room to visit me. Not even once. The last time I had seen him was our first encounter when we didn't even speak with each other. It was as though he was taking all the sweet time in the world before he came to acknowledge me as his mate.
Lance had only been telling me what would placate me when he showed me the room. I had healed fully days ago, but neither of them came by to question me and find out which pack I belonged to. Despite not being worth my mate's time, he still wanted to keep me around. As a prisoner. I doubted he even considered that I would be missing my family and feeling incredibly worthless by being locked in this room alone.
The only thing I allowed myself to consider as a bright side was the fact that I was able to spend more time with Lilian. Right now, she was at the daycare. Likely playing with other children or being held by Ashlyn.
Part of me felt guilty for sending her to the daycare since I was her only family while we were at this pack. I loved having the chance to be closer to her while she likely missed her parents, but I could never replace them. It didn't feel fair to leave her trapped in this room with me when I could feel myself becoming more short tempered the longer I was stuck here. I didn't trust Calum even a little bit, but I believed that Ashlyn wouldn't do anything to hurt Lilian.
Perhaps needing a break from watching my niece meant I wasn't cut out for being a mother. Not that I would ever become one if my mate continued to stay as far away from me as possible. If Calum were to show his face in my room, I promised myself I would confront him. Tell him that no person deserved this kind of treatment, let alone his mate. Unfortunately, there was no way I could ever give him a piece of my mind if he never let me out of this damn room.
I took a deep breath and stopped my pacing to pick up a copy of Jane Eyre off of the bookshelf. It was true when Lance had said there would be books and other forms of entertainment to keep me busy. However, they didn't keep the boredom at bay. The bookshelf was packed full of classics and even the newest popular books, but after so many hours of reading I needed something more.
Even the large selection of movies and TV shows didn't feel like enough. I had too much energy to sit around for an entire week. It had been so long since I shifted into my wolf and went for a run. If I were trapped inside much longer, I was sure to go insane.
I missed being social and having friends to do things with. Lilian didn't count because she wasn't able to talk enough for us too have a full conversation. And even though I saw the maids, they refused to talk to me.
The more I dwelled on it, the more I felt like I needed to scream. Though the guest room was spacious, being confined to it had me feeling claustrophic.
It was in that moment I decided I couldn't take it anymore. I was getting out of this room.
"Ahhhh!"
In a split second, the guard was already barging into my room with a look of concern. "What's wrong, Miss? I heard you scream."
I sped up my breathing, trying to make myself look panicked.
"There's a huge spider in the bathroom!" I exclaimed while pointing to the one adjoining to my room. "Please! I'm deathly afraid of spiders! Will you kill it for me?"
The guard's expression turned calmer once he realized I was not in any immediate danger. He puffed out his chest and smirked, proud to help a damsel in distress.
"I'll handle that for you, little lady. Don't you worry."
As he stepped into the bathroom, I encouraged him to go in further, "It's back there. In the corner of the shower."
"I don't see any-"
I slammed the door shut before he could fully catch on to my lie. I grabbed the chair nearby to put under the doorknob. It wouldn't keep him in there forever, but it would last long enough for me to escape the room.
While the guard began pounding on the bathroom door, I sprinted for the door. I didn't have an exact plan for where I would go once I left the room. I couldn't leave the territory without Lilian, but being anywhere outside of the room would be an upgrade even if I could only experience it for a few moments.
I rejoiced in the rush of freedom as I made my way through the halls quickly. There were likely guards around the pack house, but if I kept my composure, perhaps they wouldn't suspect anything. Only a couple of guards had seen me or known about my presence in the guest room.
If anything, I could explore the pack house. Just wandering throughout the building would ease some of the frustration I had been feeling over the past week. I would start by going to the kitchen to get myself a snack. It would be a while before my next scheduled meal and I could use something to snack on. It felt like so long since I actually had the opportunity to choose something for myself to eat.
Though I was completely unfamiliar with the house, it wasn't that hard to navigate. After some turns throughout the hallways, they led me to the stairs that would take me to the main level, which is where the kitchen was most likely to be. Unfortunately, I was never able to make it to the kitchen.
I hustled down the steps, thinking I still had just a little time before my guard would be able to get out of the bathroom. However, as soon as I reached the bottom of the stairs, I ran right into the man who had tried his best to avoid me this whole time. Looking up, I met the menacing glare of my mate.
