He had no specific destination within the ballroom, but Nick didn’t want to wait by the garden doors and chance encountering Esmond again. Reuniting with his sisters was also out of the question at the moment—he was in no mood to be pestered about dancing. The supper room, he decided, and began to move through the crowd. He would be able to take his time looking over the food and perhaps find something stronger than champagne to drink, then he could take a plate back to Charlotte, which would hopefully forestall any complaints about his absence.
All the while, he was wondering how to find out more about the Marling family and from whom. He was reluctant to discuss it with Charlotte. Would she tell him the risk was not nearly as important as an advantageous marriage? Nick didn’
