He hadn’t wanted to bring Emma along.
There had been a moment when he had seen her wide eyes in the lobby of the apartment building that Gideon had wanted to throw her over his shoulder, take her upstairs, and lock her safely away before heading out to take care of Marcus on his own. He had come “thisclose” to actually doing it.
But then she had held out that damned invitation to him. Didn’t say a word. And the scent of Jesse’s blood had assaulted his senses. It carried with it the stench of fear, and the sinking feeling Emma had felt that—even from this kind of distance—had convinced Gideon he couldn’t leave her out of bringing Jesse home.
Besides, he might need her.
