She’ll be here any minute, Ruby will. And it’s a good thing. A second after I called the Uber for her, literally just a second, Jessi’s monitor started beeping.
Something about that erratic heart again.
Now there’s three nurses in here and even more monitors going off. I’m so tired at first I figure this must just be the way things go, but the nurses are all acting more worried than normal. It’s my first indication something’s wrong.
I think back to all those hospital movies and TV programs.
You never want to hear the monitors beep. Not like this.
“What’s going on?” I ask.
