*Irene*
I lean against the sun-warmed brick wall outside the bar, my heart racing from more than just the brisk midday breeze. The neon sign above flickers, casting a kaleidoscope of colors onto the sidewalk, but I’m not here for the drinks or the atmosphere. I came to see him.
After a restless morning I had went to the precinct, I felt a magnetic pull toward Benjamin. I needed to be near him, to feel that electric connection we’d shared in passing. When I saw him and his partner getting into his car I had a feeling where they were going and followed them… and I was right.
As the door swings open, my breath catches. Benjamin steps out first, the light catching his sharp features and pouring over him like a halo. His partner follows closely behind, but my attention is solely on him. There’s a weariness etched into his expression, a shadow of the burden he carries, and I can’t help but smile as our eyes meet.
He turns slightly saying something to his partner, She glanses at me, then nods with what looks like a sigh. Benjamin makes his way towards me and butterflies erupt in my stomach.
“Hi, Irene,” he greets, his tone curious yet warm. “What are you doing here?”
“Oh, you remember me?” I tease, taking a step forward, the heat of his presence washing over me. The masculine scent of him filling my senses.
“Of course,” he replies, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes.
“I noticed your car and hoped to see you.” The flirtation is thick in my voice, and I let it linger as I lean closer. “What brings you to this side of town?”
He hesitates for a moment, glancing back at his partner before returning his gaze to me. “We were just investigating a case.”
“Is that so?” I lean in just a little more, letting my interest shine through. “Anything exciting?”
“Just a murder,” he says, his voice low but steady. “A man was killed brutally, and he was here at the bar last night… so we were asking around.”
My heart races at his words, a thrill coursing through me. “Oh, that sounds terrible. But you know, I was here too. Maybe I can help.” I let the words slip from my lips, the invitation hanging in the air like a challenge. “Maybe I saw him.”
He raises an eyebrow, skepticism creeping into his expression. “You want to help? Could you come down to the precinct?”
“Of course,” I say, my voice softening, almost conspiratorial. “But I don’t like the precinct. It’s too… impersonal.” I let my gaze linger on him, searching for that flicker of interest. “I could come to your house later, after you’re off work. I might have seen something that could be useful.”
He studies me, his expression shifting as he weighs the offer. “Irene, I don’t know if that’s a good idea…”
“Why not? I am not dangerous” I press, my confidence surging. “You need witnesses, and I’m offering you one. Plus,” I add, letting a coy smile slip across my lips, “it’s not just about the case. I’d love to spend some time with you.”
He hesitates, his eyes narrowing slightly as if he’s trying to decipher my intentions. But beneath that uncertainty, I can see a flicker of intrigue, an unspoken curiosity that draws him closer.
“Okay,” he finally concedes, the corner of his mouth tugging upwards, betraying his reluctance. “I’ll finish up here, and then we can talk… Around Six o’clock, would that fit?.”
“Great,” I say, my voice light, though my heart is pounding with excitement. “I’ll be waiting for you.”
As he turns to head back into the bar, I call after him, the words slipping out before I can think better of it. “Benjamin, be careful out there.”
He pauses, looking over his shoulder, and in that moment, the air crackles with unspoken tension. “I will,” he promises, and then he’s gone, slipping into the car the door snapping shut behind him.
I lean back against the wall, exhilaration pulsing through me as I see him drive away. The sun is bright, but the thrill of the hunt feels intoxicating. I’m not just an observer anymore; I’m stepping into his world, and I intend to make my mark.
Today is just the beginning. As I wait for him to finish his work, I envision how I can weave myself deeper into his life, becoming not just a source of information, but a partner in every sense of the word… someone he craves the way I crave him. The world may be dark, but the possibilities are endless, and I’m ready to embrace every shadow that comes with it.
