Lyssa
I wasn't really sure how I felt about everything. I watched Goose for a long time pull up information on my ex and my sister that no one should ever be able to find on someone. Information that I thought was always private, and unless I gave it out to someone myself, no one could ever see. I watched him find information on my sister and ex and thought about him telling me he had once started doing the same to me, but had stopped. It made me wonder what all he knew about me that I never told him. I know he told me he had stopped with my social media page, but had he? The speed and ease with which he was pulling information on other people made me wonder how true that was.
Yet at the same time, I was invested in the information he was finding. Things that made me glad I had left when I did. Maybe even wish I had left sooner. I knew the day I left Ray that he was a pig, but I didn't realize the extent of it. Seeing what Goose was finding out about him, I almost wanted to thank my sister for doing what she did. Nearly, not quite, but almost. It all made me want to confront him and ask him why. Why would he do the things he did? And above all, why be with me while doing them? It didn't make sense. Nothing was forcing him to stay with me the whole time. If he truly wanted to be with my sister or any of the other women, why had he gone as far as our wedding day? What was in it for him? It couldn't have been that he really loved me, that would be bull s**t. So then why?
A soft tapping on my door had me sighing and getting up off the couch. Tossing the blanket, Goose must have lain over me to one end of the couch as I got up. As I walked over to the door, a note on the table caught my attention, causing me to pause just long enough to read the small request from Goose. He must have found even more information after I fell asleep last night. I wonder what he found that he wants me to know before I face my sister again. The soft tapping started again. Walking the rest of the way over to the door, I peeked out to see who was at my door before opening it.
Emilia stood there with a cup from my favorite place down the street. Inside the cup was the best strawberry banana milkshake there ever was. Balanced on her arm was a small box from the same place. Pulling her free hand away from the door, she grabbed the box before it fell and held it and the milkshake out to me.
"I am sorry for being a b***h. I should have never taken your sister's side, especially without all the facts."
Taking the milkshake and the box from her, I turned and walked over to the table, leaving the door open for her so she could follow me. Which she did, closing the door behind her.
"I forgive you this time. But don't think bringing me a ham and cheese croissant and a milkshake will make up for it next time. Also, if I am being honest, I don't think I have all the information either."
Both of us sat down, Emilia picking up Goose's note and holding it up for a second or two before setting it back down on the table; she nodded.
"D, said he got Goose his laptop."
I nodded.
"Goose spent last night looking into my sister and ex."
Leaning back in her chair, she blew a long breath of air out.
"And I am guessing he hasn't shared with you all of that information."
She gestured to the note. My eyes fell to it a moment before sighing.
"I don't know what else there was to find. I know I fell asleep, and he was still pulling things up. I didn't even know someone could find out some of what he was finding."
Silently, she watched me for a minute before letting out another long breath of air. Sitting up in her chair again, she leaned on the table.
"I get the feeling that Goose doing this scares you, but it shouldn't. Goose may not always use his talents for good. But I can tell you, if he is not getting paid to use them, it is because the person he is using them for is someone he has decided he cares about deeply. He cares so much that he will do anything to protect that person, and that includes going to jail. If he has decided to look into your sister and your ex, he thinks something is WAY off, and he feels the need to protect you. Something he will do if you want him to or not, it's who he is."
She was right, I know she was right. I didn't need Goose to do anything more than what he did yesterday by following me back into the house after everything to know he had my back. I didn't need him to tell me he has had my back from the first day we met, and he would be doing the exact same thing a month ago as he is doing now. And if the roles were reversed and I knew how to do the things he does, I would be doing the same thing for him. So with a slight nod, I set back up in my chair and opened the box that held my ham and cheese croissant.
"Okay."
Raising an eyebrow, Emilia watched me.
"Okay?"
I nodded.
"You are telling me to trust Goose, and I do trust him. So, I will wait to talk to my sister and confront my ex until after I talk to Goose."
"Okay…"
A knock on the door had us both looking over at the same time. This knock was much harder and louder than Emilia's knock. Looking back at each other, I shrugged my shoulders. I wasn't expecting anyone. My sister would not knock without yelling my name at the same time, and Goose wouldn't have waited before walking in. Getting up, Emilia walked over to the door, peeking out a second before opening it. A heavy-set older guy dressed in a black suit and tie stood on the other side of the door with a vanilla envelope in his hand.
"Miss Lyssa Page Reese?"
Emilia turned, looking at me, the older man's eyes following her line of sight, and looked at me.
"Yes?"
"I have an invitation for you and a guest. If you wouldn't mind signing for it."
Standing, I walked over to the door. The guy held out a tablet with a signature screen, stating that I had received the package.
"Whose is it from?"
The man shrugged and pushed the tablet out at me again. Glancing at Emilia, she shrugged as well. Leaving me no choice, I had to sign the tablet so I could get the envelope. So I did, using my finger, I signed my name on the tablet. As soon as I was done, the older man pulled the tablet away from me and held out the envelope. The moment I had it in my hand, he turned and walked off quickly.
"That was strange."
Nodding in agreement, Emilia shut the door. Both of us walked back over to the table while I opened the envelope. Inside was another envelope with an invitation card.
'Tomorrow evening, 6 p.m. The Brewery. You and one or two friends.'
That was it, nothing on it saying who it was from. I didn't recognize the handwriting either so that I couldn't go based on that. I could tell you it wasn't from my sister or ex unless they had someone else write it for them. Then again, if it had been them, I don't think they would have been nice enough to let me bring anyone with me. Actually, I am pretty sure they would have told me to come alone. But whoever sent the invitation wasn't.
