I had spent the entire day in my study which, if anyone asked, would sound perfectly normal. People expected me to work all day. It was the one habit about me that no one ever questioned.
But the truth was I hadn’t done much work at all .My laptop had been open for hours. Emails unanswered. Reports untouched.
Instead, I had picked up a book from the shelf behind my desk sometime in the afternoon and pretended that reading was productive. It wasn’t.
I had been staring at the same pages for hours. Not because the book was interesting, because it gave me an excuse not to leave the room. Not to see Freya. Not to continue the conversation we had earlier. Or more accurately… hThe argument.
I leaned back slightly in my chair, eyes still on the page in front of me. But the words
