Chapter 3

“W-What?” Elissa asked.

She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Did he just say that she was hired? What in the world was happening to him? Elissa was so confused about her ex-husband. Why would Alejandro hire her? They didn’t end up well, she was still mad at him, and she could feel that their feelings were mutual, but why would the man hire her?

“You’re hired,” Alejandro repeated.

“Why?” Elissa asked.

It’s not that she doesn’t want the job, it was just that they had an unpleasant past. She wasn’t sure if they could work well together. And what if his current wife found out that his ex-wife was working as his secretary? Would that be a problem?

Alejandro saw the situation as his opportunity to get his revenge on Elissa. He wanted the woman whom she wasted five years ago. He wanted the woman to regret her decision five years ago.

“You need a job, so I am hiring you,” Alejandro said, simply.

Elissa starred at him for a while, and then sighed. The woman was thinking about what could possibly be the reason behind it. But whatever that is, she needs that job. She could save a lot from that job. And that was all that mattered to her right now, nothing more, nothing less.

“Alright, when will I start?” Elissa asked Alejandro.

Alejandro smirked. He was right, he thought. His ex-wife was still a gold digger. He was thinking that Elissa was just playing hard to get.

“You can start tomorrow,” Alejandro said.

Elissa nodded. She left the farm, to look for an apartment nearby. She would have to live alone in Cariaga for the meantime. She cannot bring her daughter there. There was a possibility that Alejandro might see his daughter. She doesn’t want anything to do with Alejandro. Even if the man was rich now, and his money was probably just from his mistress. That’s what Elissa was thinking.

After hearing from Alejandro that she could start tomorrow, Elissa left the farm as she needed to find an apartment where she could stay while working as her ex-husband’s secretary. Being with Alejandro around was a torture for her. She knew that up until now, she couldn’t forget how the man cheated on her.

“Yes, that room is still available,” an old woman said.

As she went around the places near the farm, she came across a room that was for rent. It was already good for her, enough space just for her. She won’t bring Katarina to Cariaga as Elissa does not want Alejandro to find out about their child. You could call her selfish, the hell she cares. There was no way she would let her ex-husband take her child away from her.

“I’ll take that,” she said to the old woman.

They talked about the rent and the rules of the apartment. When they agreed, Elissa informed the old woman that she would move in immediately. She would have to prepare everything in a rush.

She went back home, after settling everything with the apartment owner.

“Oh my gosh! Congratulations!”

Alena and Katarina were both jumping in happiness for Elissa. They were so happy that the woman got the job.

“Baby, will you go watch TV? Alena and I will just talk about something,” Elissa told her daughter.

Katarina obeyed her mother. She went inside, and turned on the television. The four-year-old kid was smart enough to use a television. She was watching her favorite cartoon show, while her mother and Alena were talking outside on the veranda.

“So, how did you get the job?” Alena asked Elissa.

Elissa sighed deeply. She doesn’t know how to narrate it properly. She was still shocked now, she couldn’t believe that her boss was her ex-husband.

“He just hired me,” Elissa said.

That’s the truth, there was no interview happened. He just said that she was hired the moment she was about to leave Alejandro’s office. Elissa was not aware of what the man was thinking. All she cared about was the amount of salary that she would get. And that was all that mattered to her, for Katarina’s future.

“What? How is that possible?” Alena was so surprised, and couldn’t believe what her friend said. How could an employer just hire someone without interviewing them?

“My boss is Alejandro,” Elissa finally dropped the bomb.

“What?! Your husband?!”

Alena was covering her mouth with her palms in surprise.

“Ex-husband,” Elissa corrected her.

“Oh!” Alena just giggled.

Elissa narrated what happened. Alena was just listening to her while smiling. Secretly, Alena was still hoping for a happy ending for Elissa and Alejandro. She didn’t know what really happened to the couple, but somehow she wished that they would come back together. Even for Katarina’s happiness.

“In the end you accepted the job,” Alena stated while smiling.

“Of course! The money was all that matters to me,” Elissa answered her friend, but looked away instantly. Afraid that Alena could read what was inside her.

Elissa explained to Alena if she could leave her daughter to her, for the mean time. No more explanation needed, Alena simply agreed. She was fond of Katarina, and taking care of the child was very simple for her. Elissa promised to pay Alena, and Alena just agreed. It could also be a little help for Alena since she was a housewife. They agreed that Elissa would just be home during weekdays.

When the night came, Elissa explained to her daughter, Katarina, their situation. The four-year-old kid was surprisingly mature enough to understand the situation. And promised her mother that she would be a good girl while she was staying in Alena’s care.

The next day came. Early in the morning, Elissa took the earliest trip, going to Cariaga Province. She had to be there early as she still needed to bring her luggage to her apartment.

After settling everything in the apartment, Elissa got herself ready. It was her first day as Alejandro’s secretary.

I can do this!

She convinced herself while looking in the mirror.

“Get me a coffee.”

Elissa was just entering the office, and her boss was already giving her an order.

“Yes, sir!” Elissa said, and smiled sarcastically.

Really? Can’t he wait until I put down my handbag?
