The city had quieted when Selena finally returned to her office. Midnight had already stretched its silence across San Felipe, but her building was still alive—lights glowing on the top floor, her refuge and her war room. She slipped off her heels and dropped them by her desk, exhaustion finally seeping in. The gala’s glitters and whispers clung to her skin like a curse.
