Chapter 3: The Power Within “Yexa can help us, too,” said the woman with a gentle expression. Everyone turned to look at me. “How can she help us? Unless she’s a fairy like me who possesses the disguise ability,” Morgana said sarcastically. “That’s right!” Diomedes snapped his fingers and grinned at me. “Yexa can copy Morgana’s ability. That way, Morgana won’t have to exhaust all her strength on us.” “No way!” Morgana objected sharply, glaring at Diomedes. I remained silent, refusing to engage in their argument. I already knew Morgana wouldn’t agree to the suggestion, which was precisely why I hadn’t spoken up earlier. I felt she was still seething over what had happened earlier—humiliated by my actions in front of everyone. “We don’t have much choice. You can’t use your ability on all of us, Morgana. Or, if you try, the chances of success in this mission will be slim, and we might lose some of our own. Are you willing to take that risk?” Zane said, narrowing his eyes as he stared at Morgana. Morgana fell silent. She understood Zane’s point. Her disguise ability wasn’t powerful enough due to her half-vampire blood. Even though her fairy mother was high-class, her vampire father was weak. Unlike Zane, she belonged to the middle-class society of hybrids, a second-generation vampire. I tilted my head slightly as I read Morgana’s thoughts. She glared at me. What does this woman have that allows her to copy others’ abilities? Morgana muttered inwardly. She had never heard of such an ability in her entire life. She wasn’t convinced by what her father, Britton, had said about my power—how she could imitate and modify abilities, making them more dangerous and lethal. If that were true, why had she only become a Moonchaser now? Shouldn’t she be leagues ahead of us? My lips curled as I read Morgana’s thoughts. "Morgana, Zane is right," Honchos said. “But Chief, how can we be sure she can copy my ability? She’s never tried it before, has she?” Morgana turned to me. “Why don’t we find out?” I challenged, a smirk playing on my lips. “Activate your ability, and let’s hold hands. Let’s see if it works.” “No! I won’t allow that! What if you copy my ability and use it against me?” she snapped. “And why would I do that?” I raised an eyebrow. “To get revenge for what I did to your father. Disguising yourself would be an easy way to do it. And I won’t allow that to happen,” she said firmly. I laughed, looking at her mockingly. “You’re too confident in your assumptions, aren’t you? If I wanted revenge, I wouldn’t need your ability. I could cripple you or break your bones in an instant.” “You b***h!” she hissed, about to lunge at me when Honchos slammed his hand on the table. “Enough! How can you succeed in this mission if you can’t even get along? You are a team. Remember that!” Morgana clenched her fists, suppressing her anger, while I couldn’t help but smirk. For some reason, I could read her thoughts effortlessly. “Morgana, let her copy your disguise ability. End of discussion! You have twenty-four hours to extract and apply the disguise ability to each member,” Honchos declared. “Yexa, you are now the leader of the Moonchasers. Don’t forget your promise to be a good leader.” “Yes, Chief,” I replied respectfully. I turned to Morgana with an approachable look. “Shall we?” “How can I be sure you’ll only copy one of my abilities? Maybe—” “As long as you activate only your disguise ability, I won’t be able to copy anything else. I can only mimic a power if it’s in use,” I interjected. She exhaled heavily. “Alright, even if I don’t like this, I don’t have a damn choice,” Morgana muttered reluctantly. The meeting ended with Morgana agreeing, though I knew she did so begrudgingly. Still, she had no choice—her abilities were limited. --- We proceeded to the training ground on the fifth floor of the Institute, a space exclusively for the Moonchasers. No one else was allowed to enter or use it. My father had already left, tending to other matters. As we walked, my fellow warriors introduced themselves. Zane. The man Morgana had called earlier was a half-blood vampire and half-white witch. His father hailed from one of the world’s most powerful vampire families, while his mother descended from the Warrior White Witches. He could wield potent magic, manipulate new vampires, and craft devices through spells, including shields, communication tools, and tracking instruments. Zane was the mastermind behind all the technology the Moonchasers used in their missions. Astrid Ballari. The firstborn daughter of a half-blood vampire and a half-blood wolf. Her father was once the leader of the world’s most powerful wolf pack, but she relinquished leadership to her younger brother, choosing instead to stay with her mother. Not for long, though—she eventually joined the Moonchasers. Her mother, a half-blood vampire and half-blood fairy, had only passed down some fairy abilities. While Astrid lacked the full power of fairies, she could communicate with animals and plants, wielding nature as a weapon. In terms of strength and agility, she was unmatched. Geof Frey. The quietest of the group. A half-blood wolf and half-blood warlock. His father was one of the high-ranking warlocks in the Conclave, but rumors claimed Geof had not inherited his father’s powers. However, I saw the truth—his extraordinary agility and super strength weren’t just from his wolf lineage; his warlock abilities were merely dormant, waiting to be awakened. Diomedes Eilif. A half-blood vampire and half-blood wolf. Unlike Astrid, he lacked fairy blood, making him a pure mix of wolf and vampire. He was the only wolf-born with vampire blood who could fully transform, though his strange eye color revealed his mixed heritage. His Encanto ability allowed him to command magical beasts. If he wanted to, he could rule the entire magical creature kingdom. And last but not the least, Morgana La Fee. One of the most powerful enchantresses alive. A half-blood white fairy and half-blood vampire. She could lure anyone into her traps using Encanto and kill them effortlessly. With nature on her side, she produced deadly poisons with ease. Each of us had our own strengths. The question now was, could we truly work together?
