A few more minutes had passed before I could find an answer.
"Yes, of course..."
Therese stood up in ravishment.
I thought that if I refused to date Brent, they would be surprised. Everyone knew I liked Brent. So when I refused, everything would just get complicated.
"You also have a brain."
I almost rolled my eyes at what Nicole just said in my mind. From now on, I had to be careful. Because I didn't know who to trust.
I was surprised by Brent's sudden action. He stood up and immediately went to the kitchen where his mom and sister were. But I was even more surprised by what he said.
"She agreed, Mom!"
I felt like I was going to have a fever from the extreme heat I felt on my face. This how it was here in our town. It was really a big thing for girls like me to be courted by a young man. Unlike the news that I heard about what it was like in the city.
There, courtship was rare. Because when you love each other, they would go all the way. It was okay for the girls out there that no courtship would happen.
Despite what happened, I still couldn't help but felt happy. I had been waiting for this day for a long time. I didn't want to assume, but...
I didn't feel like Brent could hurt me. So he couldn't be involved in killing me. If he wanted to kill me, why would anyone else do that for him? A man was still stronger than a woman, so he wouldn't demand that especially to a woman.
"Because even a child can kill you with your cowardice."
Maybe this time I would be the one to kill someone. The only difference was, I would not kill a human but a witch instead.
"It's time to leave. It's boring here," Nicole said and I almost mumbled a curse.
Brent ran out and broadcast what had happened earlier.
Therese elbowed me. "I hope I can find someone like Brent."
I looked at her with narrowed eyes. "You don't need to find love, it will come to you unknowingly."
I turned my attention back to what I was eating. Then I looked at Therese again when I didn't hear her answer. I saw her staring at me. I raised an eyebrow at her to say what her problem was.
"Looks like something has changed in you."
My eyebrows rose even higher. "You're saying?"
"You're talking distinctively and you're acting differently."
I took a deep breath. "You know, Therese, there's nothing permanent in this world. Even people change too. It's time to act accordingly to my age."
Her face wrinkled even more. She was obviously confused by what I was saying. I held onto her shoulders. "Do you remember our plan to find a job in the city?"
She nodded sparingly. "But you don't want to leave your mom and dad."
I removed my hands that rested on both of her shoulders and then leaned back on my seat.
I was an only child. Mom and Dad were old now. They were old when they got married. It was said that Mom had a hard time conceiving me then, so they never had children after me.
So, now that I was twenty-eight, I still didn't have a job. There was no job here. We still need to go to the city to find a job. I didn't want to leave them. That was why I was still unemployed.
"Why did you suddenly come up with our plan? Brent is going to court you now." Therese was obviously wondering what I was saying.
I didn't know what to do or what to reason out. She knew me very well.
I turned to face her again. "I just thought maybe it's time to take care of my own life. Mom and Dad have always been pushing me away. They want me to live my life the way I want it to be. They've already transferred all their property to me."
"Really?"
I somewhat nodded. If I followed what Mom and Dad said, would I die? If I left Medison Vill, would I still be alive?
Brent came back and sat down in front of us again. Obviously happy with what happened. "Oh? Why are your faces like that?"
He looked at us with confusion all over his face. I immediately elbowed Therese and turned to her. I glared at her to say 'get back to your senses'. She seemed to understand because she immediately smiled. "My stomach suddenly hurts. I'll just take the restroom."
I stared at Therese's back, which was now walking away from where we were. Suddenly, her mood changed.
I didn't want to think she killed me. In fact, I could tell that she was one of the prime suspects because she knew a lot about me. She also knew the ins and outs of our house and my room.
But...
There was a part of my heart that telling me she was not and she couldn't do that to me.
We grew up together almost and I already knew her very well. We dreamed together, we made plans for our future together. She was like a sister to me.
But I didn’t feel that I needed to suspect her.
One more thing was...
I still didn't know what the reason why I was killed. It could be money.
We were one of the richest families here in our town. We owned vast tracts of land at the south side of Medison Vill. It was still vacant and I didn't know what Mom and Dad's plans were for that property. Mom and Dad had also made a big investment in the bank.
I couldn't live more than twenty years even if I was unemployed.
Dad was a retired soldier and Mom was a retired doctor. They were so old. So when my mother told me to go to Venzua City, one of the largest city in the country, and live there, I was still hesitant. Many modeling agencies were hiring me and wanted to work for them. But I turned down every opportunity. Because I didn't want to leave Mom and Dad.
"Are you really okay?" I turned my attention back to Brent, who was staring at me intently. "Earlier you seemed out of place."
I smiled. "How would you feel when you found out someone had betrayed you?"
His forehead furrowed. "What kind of question is that?"
I just wanted to catch him, but it didn’t seem that I could get an answer from him.
"Nothing. I just want to know what your reaction will be."
He laid his arms on the table and looked at me seriously. "Of course, I'll get angry and lose my trust in that person."
I nodded.
Yes...
I had lost my trust already.
To everyone.
