CHAPTER ONE

I slowly wiped my eyes when they got blurry due to my sleep. Our neighbor's chickens were the reason why I woke up early. They kept on crowing, and it seems like they won't stop disturbing our sleep. My forehead furrowed when I felt the scorching heat from the sun coming out of my open window when I turned to look at it. I finally realized the purpose of this window. Great. I decided to stretch my arms and do some exercises before I headed straight to the kitchen to have some breakfast. I saw my father preparing bread, and he almost jumped when he saw me seated next to him. His shocked face didn't fade either when I smiled sweetly at him. "Is there a problem?" I asked. He shook his head and handed me a piece of paper. "Someone left a letter for you, Solanna," he said. I rolled my eyes when I saw the handwriting. I let myself lean my back against my wooden seat. I ignored him and let myself pick some bread from the plate. Dad didn't look at me because it seemed like he knew that I wasn't in the mood to talk about what happened these past few weeks. I'm sure that Blake was the one who wrote that letter. My older sister won't waste her time dropping some pieces of paper just to force me to go home because of my parents' wishes. Some people said that my life would be better if I stayed in that house. It seems like their assumptions were all wrong, because when I decided to stay in that house with them, I felt my life had become more miserable. Yes, I'm happy that I'm finally with them, but my life with them wasn't as fun as my life here on the farm with my adoptive parents. I'm happy that my siblings were always there for me, but I don't know why my body seemed to miss the fresh air from the field more than the smell of smoke and dust from the city. "Dad, I'm leaving!" I said, which made him nod at me. I didn't wait for him to come out of the hut because I knew that he would stop me from doing the job I chose. This is what I always do whenever I am here, selling vegetables whenever the farm isn't available. I was carrying a large bucket along with a large bilao that I put on the top of my head. These are the things I take with me whenever I sell vegetables and fish. The market was still a bit far away, and while walking in the middle of the scroching heat from the sun, I started calling my regular customers. Even before I could step my feet on the ground, my neighbors sometimes ran towards me to buy goods, which was the reason why, even before I could step my feet inside the market, I ran out of all my goods. My neighbors once bought the things I sell at retail and once asked me to rest for that day, which I ignored because selling goods at the market wasn't the only job I had for the day. Usually, I spend my time plowing at the farm and helping my father harvest some vegetables. Sometimes, I spend my time at the market helping my mother sell her goods. Yes, I once tried to work on the construction site to help lift some cement, which helped me with my savings before. I don't tend to rest because I'm living now with my adoptive parents. I have sibling who rely on me because my parents are unable to work and pay for his school fees. "You're too early, ah?" Spencer said when I saw him on the basketball court. I smiled at him as he approached my direction. "If I purchased all your goods, would you take some rest?" "What do you think of me?' I said, while pointing at myself. He chuckled because of what I'd said. "I'm not like you who love to waste time playing nonsense games. I have a family to support." "Okay, then. You're so mean," he said, which made me laugh at him. "I have no idea where I would hang the vegetables I purchased from you. Our house seemed to be a vegetable market because of you." I laughed at him, but I couldn't help but feel confused at what he said. I said, "The vegetables I'm selling aren't for display at home. You need to cook it, stupid!" He chuckled at what I'd said before handing me two thousand bills, which was the reason why I furrowed my brows in confusion. I wanted to ask him, but then, who am I to refuse? Of course, I will accept this money because I'm not one of those people who almost die just because of their pride. I raised my brows. "If your friend hadn't instructed me to buy your goods, I wouldn't have helped you," he kidded. "There's someone who secretly gives me money to hand over to you. I know that you don't accept money without compensation, so I decided to purchase what you sell, even though I don't eat vegetables." My face wrinkled because of what he said. I don't know, but it seems like I don't want to accept the paper bills he was handing me. It seemed like someone was whispering to me to tear it in front of him and stab it deep down into his throat. "Who?" I asked curiously. "Who was the one who asked you to do this?" He shook his head. It seems like he has no plan to answer what I've asked. Even if he keeps his mouth shut, I already know who is behind this scam. I felt my shoulder lowered a bit because of dissapoinment, and it seemed like he saw my reaction, so I wasn't surprised when he laughed at me. "Oh, Solanna," he said, while shaking his head. "I already know those sorts of guys," he said, before he chuckled and crossed his arms while looking at me. "They were willing to spend ten thousand a week just to help the girl they loved." He chuckled while raising his brows. "I'm sure that man likes you a lot!" I shook my head and smiled a bit. "Stupid, that's impossible," I said, which made him frown a bit. "Why?" I neared him and whispered to his ears, "He's my brother," before giggling and turning my back on him. "Huh?" Instead of replying to him, I just raised my right hand and turned to him to say goodbye. As I walked farther and farther away from the basketball court, where he was, the smile etched on my lips slowly faded. "What is his problem this time?" I asked myself about the man Spencer was talking about earlier. I almost lost my balance when I bumped into the man in front of me. He quickly pulled me closer to him, which caused my nose to hit his lip. I stayed away from him and quickly rubbed my nose using my palm. He laughed when he saw the disgust in my eyes and the way I looked at him. "I was looking for you the whole time!" he said, before pulling me once again to give me a tight hug. I quickly left his embrace and jokingly pushed him away from me. "Get off of me. You're disgusting!" I complained, which made him laugh. "What "I was looking for you" you were talking about? Don't you know where we live? Your letters reach me at home!" Blake giggled at what I said before looking at me from head to toe. "And I won't stop until I get you home." My eyes rolled at what he said before continuing to walk past him. Blake seemed to have no intention of leaving me, because when I passed him, he quickly followed me on my side to repeat over and over again what he had said earlier. I felt dizziness from the way my eyes rolled at him because of my irritation with him. Blake could do nothing but smile and laugh at my side. "Aren't you tired of what you're doing?" I complained when we stopped in front of our house. He said, "I will never get tired of you, baby," while winking at me, which made me almost vomit at his words. This was the first time he called me "baby," so I couldn't help but feel goosebumps. It never entered my mind that he would consider me his sister, whereas before that he would almost compete with Shaun to get my attention. Oh, erase that. I don't want to think about that bastard again. "Then, I'm already tired," I hissed, which made him burst into laughter. I pushed him away, but it seems like he doesn't want to go away from me. "Go away and don't come back! Stop buying my goods too, because you're no longer funny!" His forehead furrowed slightly because of what I said, and it looks like my suspicion was correct. "I'm not buying any of your goods, Solanna," he said, which made me look at him, confused at what he said. "I don't even care if you get burned in the scorching heat of the sun while selling those rotten... products. It's more fun to see you impoverished," he laughed, which I ignored. My attention was already focused on the persona of the man Spencer was referring to earlier on the basketball court. If Blake wasn't the person behind this, then who was it? Is Shaun the one who purchased my goods?
