Chapter 4 - Katherine

“We need to find this Sunshine Diner,”I told Shiela as I examine the town’s map. “It’s just few blocks away including grocery stores and a small shopping center.” The apartment is bare: not even a single furniture can be found. Shiela decided to look for a sofa, a ref, and a bed tomorrow instead of finding a job. I realized that moving from our house into a new place was not easy at all. Now, we have to lie on the floor the whole night. “I’m so tired from a long drive,” I hear Shiela complained as she leaned at the wall. “But I didn’t realize I would be sleeping without a bed tonight.” “I’m sorry,” I folded my arms across my chest. “If I didn’t rush leaving my Dad’s house, you’re still at your house sitting on your couch comfortably. I promise to buy all the necessities tomorrow. But for now, we have to find a restaurant to fill our stomach. I’ll drive this time.” Shiela followed me when I went out of the house. Few blocks away from our new apartment, we found few restaurants and a shopping mall. “Hey! Why don’t we buy a sofa and a bed now? I hope they could deliver it right away, couldn’t they?” Shiela exclaimed in excitement as we entered the mall. “Alright. We’ll do some shopping first before we have our dinner. You think so?” Shiela agreed right away and finds this small shop of furniture. Immediately, I asked the owner of the shop to deliver sofa, bed, and dining table for two at the apartment. “I’m so lucky to have you,” Shiela giggles as we enter into a Japanese restaurant instead of a diner. “You are so rich you can buy anything you need.” “I am luckier to have you,” I said. “I wouldn’t be here living my freedom if you didn’t help me.” I admit, when I said I want to live on my own, I didn’t mean driving alone for hours and living in a bare apartment overnight. Having Shiela as my companion makes my life a less hard. My interview is ten o’clock the next morning. I got out of bed at seven o’clock to have my early coffee. I had to set an alarm to wake me up in the morning because I don’t have a mother to wake me up everyday now. Shiela finds egg and ham from the grocery bag for our breakfast while I searched for Adam’s Clothing on the internet on my telephone. It is a big factory of yarns and they also have a clothing line. When I searched for the CEO of Adam’s Clothing online, a picture of a young, hot and masculine man with dark deep-set eyes. Hmmm… And if Leon Adams was a hottie on a picture, he has this powerful personality in person. He was gorgeous. He stands six feet or so, trim build, with jet black hair and a strong jaw. He talks to a lady who must be one of his secretaries and instructed her that interview will start in five minutes. I see a line of applicants wearing their best suit to impress the CEO. I am the tenth and the last applicant. I was wrong when I concluded that Adam’s Clothing is a small company. When I entered the gate of Adam’s property, I saw hundreds of people were with me, walking fast that they seem to be late for work. I didn’t even expect to enter into an elegant office surrounded by glass walls. “Miss De Guia,” the secretary calls me as if waking me up. “Y-yes?” I replied stunned. The woman in front of me was maybe in her thirties. “Please come back this afternoon because Sir Leon had an emergency meeting at eleven o’clock. We don’t want you to wait long.” “At what time exactly?” I asked with a smile. “Judy!” called the baritone voice. He looked at me in split second and turned his gaze at Judy again. “Yes, Sir Leon?” Judy asked and walked towards him. They talked softly while I surveyed Leon Adams and makes my own impression. He wore a dark suit, like most businessmen. He moves with authority and power. His glances at me makes me shiver which I don’t understand why. I don’t even understand why he had to throw glances at me like that while he does not look at other applicants. I tried to look away when he meets me in the eye. I don’t know why I felt uncomfortable. The woman walked back to me and told me and other applicants to follow her instead. We entered what we seemed like a conference room with twelve seats. “Instead of an interview this morning, just take the exam instead so we don’t waste time. Whoever passes the examination today will return this afternoon for the interview. Goodluck ladies!” Okay, this one I hate the most. If I only knew there was an exam, I wouldn’t have applied. The test paper was handed to us that we need to answer in thirty minutes. I didn’t take the exam when I was hired at my father’s office. I didn’t know I need to pass cognitive ability tests before I become the CEO’s executive assistant. Or maybe because Adam’s Clothing is one big company that they want to hire the best employee. I am not the best. I am not good at all. I will be needing to find another job after this. A job that doesn’t require much exams or doesn’t require great employee. After answering the test paper, I handed it to Judy and ready to leave. But she told me to wait outside Leon’s office to wait for the result of shortlisted employees. Whoever is called will return this afternoon for the interview. Five minutes before twelve o’clock, Judy called few names of those who would return later. I was surprised to hear my name on the list. My frustration before the exam was replaced by unexplainable excitement. One, I might get the job if I get lucky. Two, I get to talk to Leon Adams face to face. I know I shouldn’t feel the attraction because he seemed a very serious man. And he maybe married at his age. I shook my head to remove such a thought. I shouldn’t feel any attraction towards him regardless how hunky he may be.
