Chapter 6: The Hunt for Fire

978 Words
The night grew colder, the damp air of the cave seeping into Elias's bones. Kael's wolves had curled near the entrance, their sides rising and falling with steady breaths, but even in sleep they kept their ears twitching, alert. Elias hugged his knees, staring at the faint glow of dying embers Kael had coaxed into a small fire earlier. He wanted warmth. He wanted safety. Yet the fire's light flickered weakly, threatening to vanish just as everything else in his life always had. Kael had noticed. His gaze—sharp even in rest—shifted toward Elias. "If you want to live here," he said, his voice calm but firm, "you will learn to keep the fire alive." Elias blinked, startled. "M-me?" Kael rose to his feet, towering, his silver eyes glinting in the dark. "The forest doesn't feed cowards. You will go, gather what you can, and bring it back. You won't be alone." At his low whistle, the two wolves by the entrance perked up, tails flicking as they padded forward. One nuzzled Elias's arm gently, as if encouraging him to stand. Elias hesitated. His heart pounded with fear at the thought of leaving the cave, of facing the dark woods again. But when the wolf nudged him once more, warmth bloomed in his chest. They weren't dragging him this time. They were... guiding him. Kael's voice dropped lower, almost like an oath. "They are your guardians now. Trust them." And so, Elias went. The forest was quieter than before, yet it still pressed down on him with its weight. Every crunch of leaves beneath his feet made him flinch, every distant rustle twisted his stomach with dread. But the wolves flanked him closely—one ahead, sniffing and scouting, the other brushing his side protectively. Elias found himself breathing easier, even daring a small smile as the wolf nudged him again, this time playfully. "You're... not so scary now," he whispered, reaching out to brush his fingers across its fur. It rumbled softly, like a growl but gentler—approval. Bit by bit, he gathered fallen branches, piling them into his arms. The wolves padded silently beside him, ever watchful. For the first time since his abandonment, Elias felt the faint stir of something unfamiliar—belonging. But then— A twig snapped. Not under his feet. Behind him. The wolves froze instantly, fur bristling, growls bubbling low from their throats. Elias's chest constricted, panic flaring as he turned slowly toward the sound. And there they were. Amber eyes glowing in the dark. Shadows shifting between trees. The rival pack. Before Elias could react, a voice drifted through the woods—mocking, smooth, too familiar. "Did you really think you'd be safe with him?" The pale-haired alpha stepped from the shadows, his grin sharp as ever. His wolves spread out, circling, their growls vibrating through the night. Elias stumbled back, clutching the bundle of wood like it could shield him. His guardians snarled furiously, snapping their teeth, but the rival wolves outnumbered them three to one. The pale-haired alpha's gaze burned into Elias. "Come here," he commanded, his voice laced with dangerous allure. "You don't belong to Kael. He keeps you caged. With me, you'd be worshiped. Desired. Treasured." Elias's heart pounded. His lips trembled as he shook his head violently. "N-no... I don't want—" The alpha's grin widened cruelly. "Then I'll take you." The rival wolves lunged. Elias screamed as one snapped at his arm, claws scraping against his skin. His guardians leaped forward in an instant, fangs tearing, bodies colliding violently with their enemies. Snarls and howls ripped through the night, fur and blood flashing beneath the moonlight. Elias staggered back, nearly dropping the wood, his breath choking in his throat. He couldn't outrun them—not again. Panic swallowed him whole. And then— A roar split the forest. Not of an animal. Not of a man. Something between. Kael. He emerged from the shadows like the storm itself, silver eyes blazing, his presence so fierce the rival wolves faltered mid-attack. His aura rolled through the forest, dominance so thick the air itself seemed to bow. "You dare," he growled, his voice reverberating like thunder, "touch what's mine?" The rival alpha's grin faltered, though he masked it quickly. "You can't guard him forever, brother." He flicked his fingers, and his wolves retreated reluctantly, snarling but obedient. His amber gaze lingered on Elias, hungry and unyielding. "The scent of an omega draws everyone. Sooner or later, he will choose me." Kael stepped forward, placing himself between Elias and the rival pack, his frame a wall of iron. His voice dropped to a deadly whisper. "He has already chosen. By staying alive." For a tense moment, silence strangled the woods. Then, with a mocking laugh, the pale-haired alpha turned, his wolves slinking back into the shadows with him. When they were gone, the forest breathed again. Elias collapsed to his knees, gasping, clutching the branches against his chest as if they were the only thing holding him together. His wolves returned to his side immediately, whining low, pressing their heads against him in reassurance. And Kael—Kael crouched before him, his hand steady as it gripped Elias's trembling shoulder. His silver eyes burned, but his voice was softer now. "You fought by surviving," he murmured. "Never forget that." Elias's tears spilled freely as he nodded weakly, his chest heaving. He had been prey. He had been abandoned. But here, with Kael's wolves at his side, and Kael's hand anchoring him— For the first time, Elias realized he wasn't just surviving. He was learning to live.
