THE ROOFTOP REVELATION

887 Words
Where secrets start to crack… and fate presses closer. The wind on the rooftop felt sharper than below, as if the moon itself sharpened the air. Margery stood opposite Brian, while the city lights were far away. Brian crossed his arms, posture straight, and his voice is quiet but edged with urgency. “Aldrich’s arrival isn’t coincidence. The Council found something unusual, so he went here to investigate the attacks...not to visit me.” Margery lowered her gaze. "The shadow-wolves…” “Yes,” Brian confirmed. “They’re experimenting with bloodlines. Someone discovered what Moonborn blood can do.” Margery’s breath froze halfway into her lungs. A memory flashed on her; The silver flames, a hand reaching toward her as she ran, her mother’s last words: Hide. And never let a king find you. “What about the students here?” Margery asked, voice with slowed. “They’re just kids. Human-wolves, many of them don’t even shift properly yet.” “That’s why Aldrich is dangerous,” Brian said. “He will protect his kind even if it means sacrificing one life to save many. Especially if that life is Moonborn.” Margery turned toward the edge of the rooftop. The moonlight clung to her silence. “Do you trust him?” she asked. Brian was silent for a long time. “At war, I trusted Aldrich more than my own father,” he admitted. “But as Alpha King…? His duty is a blade.” Margery nodded once, accepting the truth that hurt more because it was honest. Duty before destiny. Crown before love. She whispered, “Then it’s my fault if he chooses wrong.” Brian stepped closer, placing a hand on her shoulder. "No,” he said. “You don’t owe him your life. Or your destiny.” She didn’t answer. But somewhere deep inside her chest, the Moonborn blood pulsed like a living drum. On the balcony below, Aldrich leaned forward slightly, the wind pulling at his coat. The wolf senses in him sharpened to a precise point. He could hear them now... Not the words... but just the rhythm. Brian’s heartbeat. Margery’s voices. And something else. Margery's pulse rose up whenever she spoke. There was a fear, but not of him, of herself. That realization sent a current through Aldrich’s spine, something primal and unsettling. Aldrich tapped the railing once, while he was in deep thinking. He wasn’t supposed to know her better. But he reached for the connection anyway, letting his senses trace her presence across the stone walls and corridors. Until their invisible threads aligned. Margery’s head lifted suddenly. She stared out into the darkness beyond the pines, eyes widening as if someone touched her mind. Because someone already had. Aldrich whispered into the bond no one should know that you exists: "You are not alone on the rooftop.” Margery inhaled sharply, dizziness hitting her. Brian caught her elbow. “Are you okay?” “Yes,” she lied, eyes flicking toward the edge of the school grounds, toward where she felt him. Brian studied her face. “What did you sense?” Margery closed her eyes for one breath.“…fire,” she whispered. Brian froze. That wasn’t possible. That was Moonborn perception, feeling intention like heat. Feeling power like flame. But someone else was burning at the same time. Below, Aldrich’s hand tightened around the balcony railing until the steel groaned. She felt him. Aldrich wolf snarled with triumph, a sound that he only heard. A king didn’t chase fate. But fate bent its knee to him. But this girl? her hidden power wasn’t bending, maybe not yet. Margery gently pushed Brian’s hand away.. "I’m leaving before I make this worse.” “You already changed everything,” Brian replied. “Just by being here.” Her throat tightened. "Please… don’t tell him what I am.” Brian exhaled, the weight of the promise heavy between them. "I will protect you. Even from him.” Margery nodded, turned toward the rooftop door, and froze. But the scent drifted in through the wind. Aldrich. Dark oak. Cold midnight. A hint of smoke. Her blood responded faster than his thought, her pulse jumping, her lips parting. Brian saw it. “You feel him,” Brian said quietly. Margery didn’t deny it. She stepped back, toward the door, fingers trembling around the handle. “I need distance,” she whispered. And she left. Aldrich remained on the balcony long after the conversation ended. He did not touch his drink, not thinking of politics, and the council. His thoughts wear a single dangerous line. "That's what she's hiding from me.." And another one that came like a vow drawn from instinct rather than logic: " She should not run… but she will. And I will follow. The moon blazed above him, reflecting in his eyes until they shone like silver embers. Tonight, an Alpha King fantasized, not like a boy longing for a girl, but like a predator understanding the shape of fate. His queen, was born from forbidden bloodline. A bond written before either of them was born. Aldrich smiled once. “If I shouldn’t choose you,” he murmured to the night, “then I already made a mistake.” "Then we do not regret it" his wolf added.
