Chapter 2
The Arrangement
My finger tightened around the paper as I tried to read it again. But no matter how many times I looked at it, the meaning remained the same.
Marriage
An arrange marriage.... Between me and the youngest son of the Valerique family.
I slowly lifted my gaze to Don Valerique who was still sitting calmly across from me, as if the situation wasn't shocking at all.
"I...I don't understand," I said quietly. "Bakit po kailangan umabot sa ganito?"
Don Valerique leaned back slightly on the sofa and sighed.
"Your father and I have been friends for a very long time, Amanda. Halos naka ba-batang kapatid na ang turing ko sa kanya." He paused for a moment before continuing. "When your father learned that the plantation was slowly failing... he came to me."
My chest tightned.
"He asked for my help," he added.
I swallowed hard.
"So this... marriage..."I looked down at the document again. "Ito po ang naging kapalit?"
"Hindi kapalit,"he corrected calmly."Agreement."
The word felt heavier than I expected.
"A partnership between our families."
My mind was spinning. I couldn't process everything all at once.
"But...bakit po Ako?" I asked softly. "I'm not even part of the business world. I'm was supposed to teaching in Manila."
Don Valerique gave me a knowing look.
"Because you are your father's only daughter. And because he trusted you to protect what he built."
I don't know what to say to that.
Silence slowly filled the sala.
Then suddenly...
I felt it.
The same presence again.
Slowly, I lifted my head.
Standing a few steps away from us.
The man I Saw earlier outside the gate.
The one riding the horse.
Now that I could see him clearly, he looked even more intimidating up close. Tall. Broad shoulders. Sharp features. His posture straight and composed like he owned every space he stepped into.
But what unsettled me the most...was his expression.
Cold.
Completely unreadable.
He wasn't smiling. He wasn't even looking annoyed.
He was simply watching.
Observing.
As if he was silently measuring everything about me.
Don Valerique noticed where my eyes were looking and then spoke.
"Amanda,"he said calmly. "Allow me to introduce you."
My breath caught in my throat.
"My youngest son."
For the first time, the man finally stepped forward.
The sound of his shoes against the floor echoed softly in the room.
He stopped in front of us.
His gaze met mine.
And for some reason, I suddenly felt... nervous.
"This is Ameil Von Valerique."
My grip on the document tightned.
So this was him.
The man I was supposedly going to marry.
Aemiel didn't say anything at first. His expression remained calm, almost indifferent.
Then after a few seconds, he slightly nodded his head.
"Amanda Vien Seravine," he said in a low voice.
The way he said my name felt strangely heavy.
Not warm.
Not welcoming.
Just... acknowledging.
I forced myself to speak.
"H-hello."
Aemiel didn’t respond immediately. His sharp gaze remained fixed on me as if he was studying my reaction.
Then he turned his attention to his father.
"So," he said calmly, his tone unreadable. "This is her."
My stomach dropped.
Something about the way he said that made me feel like…
This wasn't just a simple meeting.
And whatever agreement my father made before he died…
It was about to change my life completely.
My stomach dropped.
Something about the way he said that made me feel like…
This wasn't just a simple meeting.
And whatever agreement my father made before he died…
It was about to change my life completely.
For a moment, no one spoke.
The silence inside the sala felt heavier than before. I could feel Aemiel’s gaze on me, steady and unblinking, like he was trying to figure something out.
I shifted slightly on the sofa, suddenly aware of how nervous I looked in front of him.
Don Valerique cleared his throat.
"Aemiel," he said calmly. "Sit down."
Aemiel obeyed without a word and sat on the single sofa across from me. His posture was relaxed but controlled, like someone who was used to being in charge.
My eyes unintentionally drifted toward him again.
Up close, he looked even more intimidating. His jaw was sharp, his expression serious, and there was something about the way he held himself that made it hard to look away.
But at the same time… he looked completely uninterested.
As if the situation didn’t bother him at all.
Don Valerique looked at the both of us before speaking again.
"As I told Amanda earlier," he began, "this arrangement was something your father and her father discussed months ago."
Aemiel didn't react.
Not even a small change in expression.
He simply leaned back slightly and rested his arm on the armrest.
"And you agreed?" he asked calmly.
Don Valerique nodded once.
"It was the best solution for both families."
I swallowed hard.
Best solution?
For them maybe.
But for me… I still didn’t know what to feel.
Aemiel finally looked at me again.
His gaze was sharp, direct, almost intimidating.
"So," he said slowly. "You didn't know about this."
It wasn’t really a question.
It sounded more like an observation.
I shook my head slightly.
"No."
Another short silence followed.
Then he leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees.
"And yet you still came here."
His tone wasn’t mocking.
But it wasn’t gentle either.
I felt my cheeks grow warm.
"I came here because of the plantation," I admitted quietly. "It's the only thing my father left for me."
For the first time, something flickered in his eyes.
It was gone before I could understand what it meant.
Don Valerique spoke again before the silence stretched longer.
"Amanda is here because she needs help. The plantation is failing."
I lowered my gaze slightly, embarrassed.
Aemiel looked at his father.
"And you told her about the agreement."
"Yes."
Another pause.
Then Aemiel stood up.
The sudden movement startled me.
He walked slowly toward the large window of the living room and looked outside, his back facing us.
For a moment he said nothing.
Then finally—
"If she refuses," he said calmly, "what happens to the plantation?"
My heart skipped a beat.
Don Valerique sighed.
"It will continue to decline. Without help… it might not survive."
The words felt like a heavy stone dropping inside my chest.
I clenched my hands together.
So this was it.
This was the real reason.
My father knew the plantation was dying…
And this was the only way he could save it.
Aemiel turned his head slightly, his sharp gaze landing on me again.
"And you?" he asked.
My throat suddenly felt dry.
"Can you really marry someone you just met… to save it?"
The question hung in the air between us.
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because the truth was…
I didn’t know.
But the image of my father… the plantation… the people working there…
All of it flashed through my mind.
Slowly, I lifted my head.
"I don't know if I can," I admitted honestly.
"But I know I can't let the plantation die."
Aemiel stared at me for a long moment.
His expression still unreadable.
Then finally he looked away.
"Interesting."
The word left his lips quietly.
I frowned slightly.
Interesting?
What did he mean by that?
Don Valerique stood up.
"I believe the two of you should talk privately," he said calmly.
Before I could react, he slowly walked toward the door together with his secretary.
"Amanda," he added before leaving the room.
"Think carefully about your decision."
Then they were gone.
And suddenly…
It was just the two of us.
Me…
And Aemiel Von Valerique.
The man I might be forced to marry.
The silence between us became even heavier.
Slowly, Aemiel turned to face me again.
His gaze sharp.
Cold.
Unreadable.
Then he said something that made my heart stop for a moment.
"So, Amanda Seravine…" he said quietly.
"Are you really willing to marry a stranger… just to save a piece of land?"
To be continued...
