Chapter 1
FRANCIS Daniel's brows furrowed when he heard the sound of his intercom. He had strictly instructed his secretary not to disturb him because he had a lot of work to do. He needed to finish all his tasks today because he had a scheduled trip later. He was going to conduct an ocular visit to the site where he planned to build a new branch of David Bank.
David Bank was one of the many businesses under the David Empire. His father, Franco David, was the one who built the empire. When he stepped down as CEO, Francis took over his position. As the eldest son, he was his father's chosen successor. His siblings didn't object; they didn't feel envious that he was chosen to manage the David Empire. Instead, they supported their father's decision.
The Board of Director has high expectations of him. He surpassed their expectations.
In just two years since he took over the management of David Empire, the company experienced remarkable growth. They were able to add more branches to their businesses, and they also gained more investors. The Board of Directors was even more impressed with him, saying that he inherited his father's exceptional management skills.
They said he was like his father before - both were monsters in the business world. Other companies were afraid to compete with them because of what they might do. But his father told him that he was truly skilled. The David Empire became even more successful not because of intimidation, but because of his abilities.
And his father was very proud of him. In fact, not just of him, but also of the achievements of his siblings. Their parents were very proud of all of them.
Francis' expression didn't change as he activated the intercom. "What did I tell you, Donna?" he asked his secretary in a cold voice. He didn't even wait for her to respond before activating the intercom again.
"I-I'm sorry, Sir Francis," her voice trembled as she spoke on the other line. And even though he couldn't see her, he knew that fear was etched on her face. She's got every reason to be scared since she disobeyed the orders.
Donna knew him well. In almost a year of working as his secretary, she was familiar with his behavior. He didn't like it when his orders weren't followed. And he had told her not to disturb him because he was busy. But she disobeyed him.
"Miss Eliz is here, Sir," Donna informed him. "She's been pestering me, saying she won't leave until she speaks with you."
His eyebrows furrowed even more at what he heard. He knew Eliz. She was his ex-girlfriend. They had a no-strings-attached relationship for almost three years until he ended it.
Eliz is a famous model, coming from a prominent family. She was one of the models for her cousin Chelsea, a fashion designer. Francis and Eliz met when he attended his cousin's fashion show.
Eliz was indeed beautiful and sexy. And she had to admit, she caught his eye. He was the type of man who, when he wanted something, would stop at nothing to get it. And he didn't even need to exert effort because the woman was already interested in him. Who wouldn't be? He is Francis Daniel David, a prominent name in the business world. Women were always the first to approach him and flirt with him.
There was no courtship or romance between him and Eliz. They started their relationship with no strings attached. Yes, she was his girlfriend, but that's all it was. He liked her, but he never said he loved her. And the same went for her. The word "love" was too heavy for him. He had never been in love his entire life. Well, he loved his family, but in a romantic sense? Not yet.
And he's not in a hurry. Cupid has not yet shot his heart. But if he did?
He just shrugged his shoulder.
Francis took a deep breath after Donna informed him. "Okay, let her in and I'll handle her myself," he simply said.
It had been two months since he ended his relationship with Eliz. Their relationship lasted long because she was different from the other women in his life. She wasn't clingy. She didn't demand his time. She was content with the time he could give her.
But as the years passed, he noticed a change in her. Eliz became the kind of woman he disliked. She became demanding, getting annoyed when he didn't give her his time. She even told the press that they were engaged, and it became the headlines. The press wouldn't leave him alone, asking when the wedding would be. And that was his last straw.
So, he ended what they had. But Eliz refused to accept it. She said she loved him and wanted him back. And this wasn't the first time Eliz had shown up at his office after he ended their relationship. She had also gone to his penthouse, trying to talk to him and convince him to take her back.
The door to his office opened, and Eliz walked in. She was wearing a black bodycon dress that accentuated her curves. Her long, chocolate-brown hair cascaded down her back. "What are you doing here, Eliz?" he asked her in a cold voice.
"You know why I'm here, Francis," Eliz said, staring intensely at him. Her voice was also filled with desperation.
Francis didn't speak. He just raised an eyebrow.
"I love you, Francis. And I want you back," Eliz said in a serious tone.
He took a deep breath once again and leaned back in his swivel chair. "I don't love you, Eliz," he said in a serious voice with a stern look. He was a blunt man, he would say what he wanted to say, even if it was hurtful.
"Right from the beginning, you knew what I could offer in our relationship," he continued. "And I couldn't give you my heart. Because love isn't my thing."
"But if you give me a chance to love you, maybe you'll love me too," she insisted. "Please, Francis, give me a chance. I promise, you'll love me back -"
She didn't finish what she was about to say, as the ringtone of his cellphone interrupted her. He furrowed his brow and picked up the phone from the surface of his executive table. He saw that it was Captain Valdez calling him.
He answered the call. "Sir Francis, the chopper is ready," Captain Valdez said to him. The chopper was his preferred mode of transportation for site visits, as it was less hassle. He also didn't want to get stuck in traffic if he used his car. And he needed to get home quickly because they had a family dinner at the mansion. His mother had called to inform him about the dinner. He was sure his siblings would be there too. His mother wanted them to be complete as a family from time to time, despite their busy schedules.
"Okay, I'll be there in a minute," he replied. He gathered his things and prepared to leave.
"Francis..." Eliz called out to him.
"I'm sorry, Eliz. But I can't give you what you want," he said before leaving her in his office.
