Lysandra stepped out of the heavy doors of the throne hall, her eyes immediately sweeping the corridor. Cassian was already gone. His navy-blue cloak appeared one last time at the far end of the hall before disappearing around the corner. The palace carried on with its usual rhythm. Officials hurried through the corridors with armfuls of parchment, while guards quietly exchanged shifts at their posts.
Everyone who passed bowed respectfully to Lysandra. As always, she acknowledged each greeting with effortless grace. But her mind... Was nowhere in the corridor. The words she had heard during the council meeting echoed through her thoughts once more. The rumors. Elara. Dorian.
And the way Cassian had silenced an entire council with a single sentence.
"You didn't come here to learn the truth..."
"You came hoping I would confirm the truth you had already chosen to believe."
A strange feeling settled over her. The council members had been right. They were afraid. But so was her brother. Because a kingdom ruled by fear... Would eventually begin tearing itself apart from within. She quickened her pace.
She reached Cassian's study just as the door was about to close. Knock. Knock. "Come in." She pushed the door open and stepped inside. Closing it quietly behind her. The room was exactly as she remembered it. Towering bookshelves. A large table covered with maps.
The calm sea stretching beyond the window. And standing before that window, his back to the door... Cassian. One hand rested behind his back. The other leaned lightly against the windowsill. He was watching the sea. Lysandra took a few slow steps forward. She said nothing.
Neither did Cassian. The silence... Wasn't uncomfortable this time. After a while, he slowly turned around. Their eyes met. The stern expression he had worn throughout the council was gone. In its place... Was exhaustion. For several moments, neither of them spoke. Then Cassian quietly opened his arms.
Without saying a single word. A warm smile spread across Lysandra's face. She had known that gesture since they were children. Whenever one of them carried a burden too heavy to put into words... The other would simply offer an embrace. No questions asked. She crossed the room in quick strides.
And silently wrapped her arms around her brother. Cassian held her tightly in return. "I missed you." Her voice was soft. Slightly unsteady. Cassian closed his eyes. "I missed you too." Two simple words. Yet they carried the weight of months. For a while...
They remained exactly as they were. There was no politics. No kingdoms. No Four Elements. Only... A brother and a sister. Together again. At last.
Lysandra slowly pulled away. This time, she studied her brother's face carefully. Her brows drew together. "You have dark circles under your eyes." A quiet chuckle escaped Cassian. "You really haven't changed." "That's the first thing you noticed?" "I traveled all this way." "The council practically put you on trial."
"And you're still inspecting my face." Lysandra gave a small shrug. "Because I know you." A brief silence followed. "Whenever something's wrong..." "...your eyes are always the first to change." Cassian lowered his head slightly. "You're still the same little detective." Lysandra laughed. "And you still don't know how to rest."
For the first time that day... The heaviness in the room began to lift. Cassian gestured toward the chairs beside his desk. "Sit." Lysandra shook her head. Instead of taking the chair across from him... She sat beside him. Just as she always had. Cassian noticed. A faint smile appeared at the corner of his lips. "You still refuse to sit across from me."
"Because I don't want you to feel like you're being questioned." She smiled. "I'm your sister." "Not the council." A genuine laugh escaped Cassian. Perhaps... His first real laugh of the day. "I'm glad." For a moment, silence settled between them once again. Then Cassian turned toward her.
His expression had relaxed. "So..." "How was Stormreach?" Lysandra's face lit up immediately. "It was incredible." "If the wind had a voice..." "...it would live there." Cassian looked at her with quiet amusement. "Don't you think that's a bit of an exaggeration?" She shook her head without hesitation. "Not at all."
She began describing the towering cliffs hidden within endless storms... The wooden harbors built above crashing waves... The wind that never stopped howling through the night... And how the islanders could predict an approaching storm simply by watching the birds. Cassian listened attentively. Occasionally asking a question. Occasionally smiling. And sometimes...
Simply letting her tell the story, just as he had when they were children. "Oh..." Lysandra said with a grin. "They also served me a soup made from dried seaweed." Cassian arched an eyebrow. "Let me guess." "You didn't like it." "I questioned every decision I'd ever made after the first spoonful." This time... Cassian couldn't hold back his laughter.
"If they'd told you beforehand that you'd be eating seaweed..." "...would you still have gone?" Lysandra pretended to think about it. "...Probably." "Why?" "Because after the second bowl..." "...it actually wasn't that bad." Cassian slowly shook his head. "So you've finally started expanding your palate." She pointed a finger at him. "One day..."
"...you're going to try it too." "I seriously doubt that." They both laughed. The weight that had filled the room... Had almost completely disappeared.
Lysandra's smile gradually faded. Her gaze drifted toward the window. She drew a slow breath. Then she turned back to her brother. "Now..." The warmth in her voice had given way to quiet seriousness. "...tell me what really happened." The smile disappeared from Cassian's face.
Silence settled over the room once again. This time... They both knew. The real conversation was only just beginning. The echoes of their laughter faded, leaving behind a heavy stillness. For several long moments... Cassian said nothing.
His eyes rested on the sea beyond the window. As though he were deciding where to begin. At last, he drew a deep breath. "It all..." "...began in the Scarlet Borderlands." Lysandra didn't interrupt. She simply listened. Cassian told her how Elara had been found, gravely wounded. About the pillar of fire the border patrol had seen piercing the darkness that night.
Their journey to Currenthold. The week she had spent unconscious. The fury he had seen in her eyes when she finally awoke. Their first meeting. The letter Dorian had sent. The council meeting. The rumors spreading throughout the palace. The growing unrest that had taken hold over the past few days. He held nothing back. Lysandra never spoke. She didn't ask a single question. She simply listened.
And as Cassian continued... The brightness gradually disappeared from her face. Her gaze drifted into the distance. It was as though she wasn't merely hearing the story... She was living it. A queen... Declared dead by her own people. Betrayed by her own husband. Now living...
Within the palace of the kingdom that had once been called her greatest enemy. At last... Cassian fell silent. The room grew still once more. Lysandra remained motionless. Her head lowered slightly. Cassian watched her for a long moment. Then, gently... He reached out.
With the tips of his fingers, he lifted her chin ever so slightly. "Hey..." Lysandra looked into his eyes. A faint smile rested on his lips. "That expression doesn't suit you."
Lysandra forced a faint smile. Cassian continued. "A few rumors..." He gave a small shrug. "...and a handful of cowards." "They're not nearly as powerful as you think." Lysandra slowly shook her head. "I'm not grieving for them." Cassian's brow lifted slightly.
"Then who?" Lysandra turned toward the window. She watched the sea in silence for a while before speaking again. "When you're struck by an enemy..." "...you know how to fight back." Silence. "But..." "...when the person you trusted most drives a blade into your back..."
She drew a slow, unsteady breath. "...you no longer know how to stand again." The atmosphere in the room grew heavier. Cassian's gaze drifted toward the sea beyond the window. There was no answer he could offer. Because some wounds... Could not be healed by words.
Lysandra continued quietly. "I feel sorry for her." "Not because she lost her power." "Not because she lost her kingdom." Cassian listened without interrupting. "But because she lost the person she believed in." A brief pause. "Trust..." "...isn't a bridge you can simply rebuild."
"Once it collapses..." "...even if you use the very same stones..." "...it will never become the same bridge again." Cassian released a slow breath. "That's why I won't leave her alone." Lysandra turned to look at him. His voice remained calm. "Right now..." "...she doesn't need armies."
"...She needs a few people who won't lie to her." Lysandra slowly nodded. For the first time... She truly understood why her brother had shown Elara such extraordinary patience. Silence settled over the room once more. Outside, the gentle sound of waves drifted in through the open window.
Several minutes passed before Lysandra finally straightened in her seat. The sorrow had faded from her face. In its place... Returned the composed resolve of a princess. "So..." Cassian looked at her. "What do we do now?"
Cassian rose and walked toward the window. Beyond the glass, the city of Nerethis stretched beneath the fading afternoon light. The harbor. The canals. The bridges. Everything appeared as peaceful as ever. "We wait." Lysandra listened without speaking. "And we prepare."
Cassian kept his eyes on the city as he continued. "That's why I never replied to Dorian's letter." A brief silence followed. "If he truly knew..." "...he wouldn't have sent a letter." "He would have sent an army." Lysandra gave a slow nod. "So he's still uncertain." "Yes."
Cassian's voice remained steady. "Sometimes..." "...uncertainty is far more valuable than certainty." "Because people..." "...make mistakes when they're desperate to uncover what they don't know." A thoughtful look crossed Lysandra's face. "So you're waiting for him." For the first time, Cassian turned to face her.
"No." A brief silence settled between them. "I'm waiting..." "...for his first mistake." An involuntary smile tugged at Lysandra's lips. There he was. The brother she knew. Calm. Patient. A king who refused to make his move... Until he had seen every piece on the board. Just then...
A soft knock echoed from the door. "Your Majesty." A servant's voice came from the other side. "Dinner is ready." Cassian gave a slight nod. "We'll be there shortly." Lysandra stood and made her way toward the door. Then she paused. "Brother..."
Cassian looked at her. "What is the queen like?" His answer came without hesitation. "The first day we met..." "...she drew her sword on me." Lysandra's eyebrows shot upward. A faint smile curved Cassian's lips. "And if we met again today..." "...she'd probably do exactly the same." Lysandra couldn't help but laugh. "For some reason..."
"...I can actually picture that." The two siblings left the study together. At the end of the corridor... A queen was already waiting for them at the dinner table.
The evening sun slowly disappeared beyond the sea. Long corridors of the Royal Palace of Nerevia glowed beneath a soft blend of gold and amber light. As Lysandra stepped through the great doors of the dining hall, her eyes instinctively drifted toward the table. Cassian was already seated. Across from him...
Elara waited in silence. The quiet that filled the room... Wasn't uncomfortable. It was the silence shared by people still learning who the others truly were. Lysandra approached with measured steps. She offered a respectful nod to her brother first. "Your Majesty."
Cassian acknowledged the greeting with a slight inclination of his head. "Welcome back." Then Lysandra turned toward Elara. For several long moments... Neither woman spoke. The last time Lysandra had seen her... Had been two years ago. On a battlefield. The Fire Queen.
A name whispered with fear among enemy soldiers. And now... She sat quietly across the table. She looked tired. But not broken. Lysandra inclined her head gracefully. "Queen Vaelor." Elara returned the gesture with equal respect. "Princess Lysandra."
Their eyes remained locked for another brief moment. There was no hostility between them. Nor was there friendship. Only... Two rulers trying to understand the weight the other carried. Just then, the servants began serving the evening meal. The silence gave way to the gentle sounds of silverware against porcelain. For a while...
No one spoke. Then Lysandra smiled faintly. "On my journey back from Stormreach..." "...I heard your name." Elara lifted her eyes. "Did you?" "Yes." "The sailors there..." "...said the Fire Queen's temper arrived faster than the storms." A faint smile touched the corner of Cassian's lips. For the first time...
Elara smiled as well. "They exaggerated." Cassian raised an eyebrow. "Did they?" Elara shot him a brief glance. "Sometimes." Lysandra couldn't help but laugh. For the first time that evening... The atmosphere around the table softened. After a moment, Elara spoke. "How was Stormreach?"
Lysandra's eyes brightened once again. "The wind never stops." "The first day..." "...you think it's going to drive you mad." She smiled to herself. "By the third..." "...you realize you can't fall asleep without hearing it." Elara listened with quiet interest. "I've never been there."
"You should go someday." Lysandra smiled warmly. Cassian looked at both of them. "If fate allows..." "...perhaps we'll go together." The three of them fell silent. The words weren't a promise. Nor were they a dream. Only... A possibility. And sometimes... A single possibility was enough to keep hope alive.
When dinner came to an end, Elara rose gracefully from her seat. "If you'll excuse me." Cassian gave a slight nod. "Good night." Lysandra offered her a warm smile. "Rest well, Your Majesty." Elara inclined her head to them both before leaving the hall. Her footsteps gradually faded into the distance. Night had settled completely over Nerethis.
Most of the palace had fallen into silence. Only one room still glowed with candlelight. Cassian's study. The large desk was buried beneath maps... Sealed scrolls... Harbor reports... And military records. Lysandra carefully examined the document in her hands.
Across from her, Cassian added the final notes to one of the reports before him. The soft scratching of his quill across parchment... Was the only sound in the room. For a long while... Neither of them spoke. Outside the window, the sea lay perfectly still. The city lights shimmered across the dark water like scattered stars.
It was peaceful. Almost... Too peaceful. Cassian finally set his quill aside. "We'll double the harbor patrols before dawn." Lysandra nodded. "I'll notify the Harbor Guard commanders personally." "And the city gates?" "They'll remain open." She looked up.
"You don't think he'll strike tonight." Cassian folded his hands behind his back as he walked toward the window. "I don't know." He gazed out over the sleeping city. "But if something is coming..." "...it won't announce itself." Lysandra quietly rose from her chair and joined him.
Together, they looked out across Nerethis. The canals. The bridges. The harbor. Everything appeared exactly as it always had. Peaceful. Orderly. Untouched. For a brief moment... It almost felt as though the worries of the past few days had never existed. Neither of them knew... That within moments... Everything was about to change.
Then— BOOOOM! The entire room lurched violently. The windows rattled. An ink bottle toppled from the desk, spilling across the open map beneath it. Lysandra sprang to her feet on instinct. "What was that?" Cassian was already standing. A slight crease formed between his brows.
He hadn't spoken yet. A second explosion erupted. This time... Much closer. BOOOM! The paintings hanging on the walls trembled. Outside, the thunder of armored boots echoed through the corridors. Shouts. Orders. The metallic clash of armor. In an instant... The entire palace had awakened.
The study door flew open. A royal guard stumbled inside, breathing hard. "Y-Your Majesty..." His chest rose and fell rapidly. Cassian took a single step forward. "Calm yourself." The guard drew a deep breath. "The Western Harbor..." Another breath. "...has exploded." The atmosphere inside the room changed instantly.
Cassian's eyes sharpened. "The cause?" "We don't know, Your Majesty." "But..." The guard's voice shook. "The explosions are still continuing." Before he could finish— A third blast thundered through the night. This time... They didn't just hear it. They felt it. BOOOOOM!
One of the towering windows in the study cracked. A thin fracture spread across the glass like a spider's web. Lysandra instinctively turned toward the window. Far in the distance... An orange glow pierced the darkness. Moments later... Thick black smoke billowed into the night sky. The Western Harbor was burning. Cassian didn't waste a single second.
"Lysandra." His voice had become calm once again. Cold. Controlled. "Initiate the emergency protocol." "Send reinforcements to the Harbor Guard." "Seal the city's northern gates." He paused for only a heartbeat. "And..." "...make sure no one believes this was an accident." Lysandra bowed her head. "At once, Your Majesty." Both of them headed for the door.
Just before stepping out... Cassian stopped. His eyes settled on the column of black smoke rising above the harbor. The expression on his face changed completely. The brother who had laughed with his sister only moments ago... Was gone. In his place...
Stood the King of Nerevia. Only two words left his lips. "It has begun." The door swung open. And together... They ran into the chaos waiting beyond.
