Chapter 1

770 Words
This story takes place during the Winter season of 1975. Charlotte A. Charles' is the name my parents bestowed upon me before they were killed in action roughly three years after the eruption of a war between the humans who were inferior when placed next to the bloodsucking vampires and the ferocious, cold-blooded angels who watched over the world from deep in the mountains. They perished five years after I was born, leaving me alone in the cruel world with nobody to take care of me and no memories for me to remember them by. Eventually, I was taken in by an orphanage on the outskirts of Rosery Village, an old and ancient place torn apart by the appearance of the supernatural entities a couple of hundred years ago. I don't know much about the history of the town or my family; our place in the orphanage was not as students but as future soldiers and warriors who would grow up to defend the village and the worlds from the evils that wanted to devour it whole. I did not make any mistake when I mentioned the word 'worlds'. Our planet was divided up when the vampires and angels first appeared. There was a war over the territory on the planet. Eventually, but not soon enough, unfortunately, the angels took their fair share by inhabiting the mountains and the caves where the sunlight would not reach, but not before many humans and angels equally had lost their lives. The vampires, as they had no distinguishable features as the angels had their wings, took up half of the outside world, dividing the remaining territory between themselves and the humans. One would think that that would be enough to stop the struggles between the three races, but the vampires needed to satisfy their cravings for desires that came in the form of human blood. While the angels were dormant and non-hostile, the vampires blended in with the humans, snatching them one by one until hundreds of thousands of the defenseless humans had gone missing. The humans had had enough of being treated like fodder and soon enough another war broke out after only a brief period of peace amongst the races. It came to a point when the humans had developed a not so brilliant tactic that was somehow revered by the entire world to stop the vampires. They sought out help from the angels, and with the vampires outnumbered, the extermination of the entire race had begun. My parents were very passionate about achieving peace, and so they volunteered to join the vanguard regiment of the fighters. There had not yet been a method of differentiating humans from the vampires back then. My parents died tragically when my father hesitated to kill a vampire because he had been tricked into believing she was a human. My mother, trying to retreat after witnessing my father's death, was also killed when she lost focus on the battlefield. The war continued on for the next number of years with no end in sight. That was until a method to tell humans apart from vampires was discovered. I was 19 years old during the Winter of 1975, and had less than six months until I would have to leave the orphanage. My training over the last few years had paid off and I was amongst the strongest trainees of that year. I believed I had the potential to further my training for the next few years and join the Navy Flight Support. It would have been a waste of my talents, but I was not so ambitious as to put my life on the line on the front lines as my parents were. Their will to fight was why I grew up in an orphanage. I did not want to throw my life away doing the same thing that they did. The vampire race had almost been exterminated. The recent battles left more of them dead than humans and angels. There was no need to fight in all solemnity when peace was already in sight. My goal was to assist the Navy by providing maintenance support until the war would be over, and then I would continue on to live a tranquil life and maybe go to school in order to convert my career. That was how it should have gone. But it didn't. An orphanage will and would always be an orphanage, no matter if it was housing the soldiers of the future who would save the world. I was adopted a few months before I would have to leave and start my life.
