Chapter 1

It was a bright Tuesday morning, a ray of the sun peeking through James curtains as the wind slowly separated and brought the fibers together in peaceful strides, he lay on the bed thinking about the activities of the previous day, he had graduated from Starcut, the largest and most prestigious Military school of Atratia. He topped all of his courses and this made a lot of officials doubt the results because only a handful of persons had graduated from the school let alone topped any course. As the sun ray became more and more unbearable, James rose from his bed to prepare for the day's activities, he wasn't sure what he would do that day but he knew he had to get out of bed for a start. James is 19 years old and has a fair height of about 6'1 feet, his black and curly hair didn't match his blue eyes. His next to perfect physique left a lot of girls dreamy. He began military training with his best friend Chelsea (who is 1 year younger than himself) at the age of four. ************* He got into the bathroom and turned on the shower, letting the water run down his body as he stared in the mirror. All he could see was a dark soul with the burning desire for justice. His eyes also couldn't escape the scar he had across his chest. After washing he put on a white T-shirt and Jean trousers, and hanging his leather jacket on his shoulders, he went down to the living room. James lived with both his parents, his father Daniel was the chief and founder of a secret agency known as Codesus, it was one no criminal dared to cross path with, it wasn't under the government and so to the people of Atratia it was an organization of invisible heroes, this was the same organization that started James and Chelsea's training, his mother Vivian also known as The Viperess was the best field agent of the Agency. "We were almost thinking you would never wake up," Daniel said without looking up when he heard James walk into the sitting room, he was reading from the daily newspaper. "A morning without push-ups or worrying about being late for the march does that to everybody" James answered picking up an apple from the bowl on the table in front of Daniel. "I quite agree with you.....Oh a girl came by while you were sleeping, said her name was Chelsea, she asked you to call her soon as you were up, turns out not everyone sleeps in when they have a free morning" James had to hold back from rolling his eyes as he picked up his car keys. "See you later Dad," he said as he walked out the door. His father knew Chelsea well, but James knew he talked that way to tease him for sleeping in. He pressed a button on his key ring and the reinforced garage door opened up to reveal his customized Codesus car, it was a gift from his father when he got his first badge for swimming. There were only two in Atratia and the other belonged to Daniel. It had very complicated tech, a heavily weaponized and bulletproof frame. To the untrained eye, it looked like any normal Audi A7 and that prevented it from getting too much attention, well, maybe it still did. He got into the car and woke the engine, he didn't have a location in mind so he just drove around the village until he decided to go see Chelsea, he picked up the phone and dialed her number. "About time Mister" came a voice at the other end "Can't a guy have a decent sleep? Military school is behind me" "Since you only called to defend yourself, I'm going to go back to my boring state of inactivity" "hey wait! I can bring an end to your inactivity, I'll pick you up at the house" "This better be good" With that she ended the call. James drove to Chelsea's house to pick her up, he had nowhere in mind for them to go. so he decided to take her to his house instead, hoping his parents would still be there by the time they arrived. When he got to Chelsea's house she was already waiting for him at the gate, she got into the car and James proceeded to his house without a word. ******** "Really James? bringing me here would bring an end to my inactivity?" "Oh come on Chels, at least you're not sulking at home" Chelsea face-palmed and looked around the house like it was her first time being in it. "where's mum and dad?" "They were home when I left, I'm sure something important came up at work" "I know a place we can go, and it's not worse than here. It seems you're having more trouble with boredom than I am." She said smiling. ugh... was the only sound James could make before following her out, turns out he was having a lazy day. He met Chelsea resting on the door to the driver's seat after he locked the house, she approached him grinning and James knew she was up to mischief. "Chelsea, please no..." he begged, motioning her to stop. "I'll take that," she said as she took his keys from his hands. "I won't dent it, trust me, tough guy" Chelsea wasn't a bad driver, some would call her a daredevil. She always had a good laugh at close calls. James on the other hand was a somewhat bad driver, he didn't care about speed limits simply because he never came close to hitting anyone or anything no matter how fast he went but he also never took needless risks, or did he? What was the difference anyway? They both got into hot police chases. "Alright, only you know where we're headed" "I wouldn't say that, you know it too" she gave him a victory wink before getting into the car. James went around the car and joined her in the passenger seat. "The Arcade" James said slowly as he figured their destination "well we have to talk about working for Codesus or not after today so... might as well burn a little time" he added aloud. "that's you brother, I am not burning 'little' time today" She emphasized little in a way that amused James, it was obvious in the way his eyes lit up, but as soon as it came, it was gone too. Chelsea put a hand on her brothers' shoulder so he would look her in the eye. "James, I know this is you and that you're a trained, talented and skilled agent, but you don't have to pretend you have no emotions with me" And with those words, she drove into the streets. James thought through what Chelsea said, she was right, he didn't usually hide his emotions from Chelsea, was it because he had graduated? It had to be, he was now a certified agent and no one in the country had his and Chelsea's qualifications. They were the best in Atratia's history, Chelsea and James had come out in the 8th Rank, the highest rank in the country, and even beyond. James always wondered how Chelsea was able to control her skill and still act like any normal girl..... but she wasn't that normal, she didn't fantasize about her love life and dream guys, or cool handbags and great shoes, still, she always blended with people. It was this balance James needed to find and although he grew up with Chelsea, he needed more from her, he needed to learn to blend with people, to live a normal life even as the special Rank 8th agent he was. When they arrived at the Arcade the bouncer didn't ask for a pass, the man smiled...and that was rare, everyone knew him to be a very grumpy guy, but he seemed to like the twins, they had been coming to the Arcade as 6-year-old kids, Daniel usually brought them after school (on days when their training was interrupted by an emergency), he was friends with the bouncer and James couldn't shake off the feeling that the bouncer was an undercover agent for Codesus. Yes indeed there were things he didn't know about the organization he controlled and trained in, all his life, but he trusted his father had things recorded to prevent any loss of information or knowledge should anything happen to him. They played some games for a few hours and Chelsea had to give up, James was smiling at her and she was burning red now. It didn't bother her any other day, why was this day different? why was James' smile affecting her only now? These questions kept racing through her mind and kept her distracted so James won every game they played. "You're cheating" Chelsea lamented, frustrated as she wasn't even coming close to a win. "Huh? what did I do now?" James asked as he raised a brow in confusion, "Why do you keep smiling? It's disturbing my concentration" she confessed, surprised at her newfound distraction. "My smile? disturbing your concentration? What else is new?" James was sure this was one of Chelsea's tricks. "Who would have known our super rank 8 agents didn't understand girls," a deep voice said from behind them. James paused, that wasn't Chelsea, the twins were seating beside themselves and they seemed to have the same thoughts, their rank was classified information, all the public knew was that they graduated from the most impossible school in Atratia. This was no civilian. The twins slowly pulled out their guns and in a flash stood up aiming at the man in a suit in front of them.
