Chapter One- The Staff Meeting
The clouds clear on a dark and eerie night to reveal the most beautiful building that a city of this size could offer. A voice is heard whispering…. Voice: Tis, Tis! Dela Moo! Tis, Tis! The voice stops whispering as the door opens, and Bellarose turns around to see Mr. Mitchell standing over her. She turns back around and continues to build with legos as if she were on a mission. Mr. Mitchell: Bellarose Smurphy! What are you doing? It is time to go “Sleepy Weepy Time”! She continues to build quickly, as if she is trying to meet a deadline, while whispering low to herself. Bellarose: I was just finishing up something important, Mr. Mitchell. Mitchell: Let us go and get you washed up and tucked into bed for the night. I have a meeting to attend later this evening. Mitchell takes Bellarose's hand with a smile on his face as he leads her out of the playroom. He hands her over to Ms. Joy to get her ready for bed as he turns and leaves the room. Ms. Joy looks at Bellarose and says in a sweety-faced voice as she places Bella in the bathtub that is filled with bubbles.... Ms. Joy: I hear you are building something amazing with legos. What were you building? Bellarose: I cannot share you the information on what I am building, or they will get mad! Ms. Joy: You know, sweetie, that they are just Legos toys. Bella looks right at Ms. Joy and says in an angry tone..... Bellarose: they’re not just legos, Ms. Joy. They are my friends. Ms. Joy: Ok! Ok, calm down, sweetie, and just tell me what you mean by your friends will get mad? Who are they? Bellarose stares at Ms. Joy, while she starts to get out the tub and says in a frustrated tone.... Bellarose: Too many questions can get you hurt! It is best not to ask any more questions, knowledge can kill! Bella casually exits the bathtub and starts to dry herself off. Ms. Joy helps her put on her favorite Pretty Princess PJ before she leads her out the door to her room. Down the hall 4 doors down are three kids that are hiding out in a room. Rosabell whispers to her brother Andy….. Rosabell: You need to go get her, Andy. Andy: f**k you! No, I am not going to get her. It was your idea, so you go get her. Rosabell stated in a firm, strong voice. Rosabell: Well, what the heck? Someone needs to go get her or were going to get caught? William quietly sat on the bed the whole time, while he watched his two older siblings argue. Andy says in a firm angry tone…. Andy: Fine! You two just stay here and do not make a sound, and as for you, Rosabell, it’s best you watch your mouth, and stop forgetting who’s the oldest. She rolls her eyes as she grinds her teeth together and says…. Rosabell: Whatever! Just hurry up and go, Boss man. Andy tipped toed down the hall, trying his best not to make a sound. Suddenly he stops, (gulps long and hard) as he nears room 928 where all the staff members were in the staff room. He overhears Mr. Conner talking about the plan for tomorrow to the staff. Mr. Conner: Tomorrow is the day Lenny is going to come and pick up the Jones kids. Marybeth is coming for the Browns, and the courts have ordered the Richardson kids to a special family that can manage them! He walks back and forth in the office intently looking at a piece of paper that he has in his hands. Ms. Joy looked at Mr. Conner with a concerned look on her face. Ms. Joy: What about the Smurphy Kids? It has already been a few months now, and we still have not come up with a plan since the Marble Family sent them all back here? A staff member named Bret Bones is sitting right behind Ms. Joy listening to her as he leans back in his chair and says….. Bret Bones: I was wondering the same thing. Are they staying here in this facility or somewhere else? The other teachers erupt in a chorus of “yeah, yeah, YEAH”. That is when Mr. Connor says…. Mr. Conner: excuse me, excuse me! We have been informed that their mother is out of prison and looking for them! {There is a roar from the staff} Mr. Bones: oh no! Mr. Joy: Oh my God Mr. Conner looks around at his staff and yells…… Mr. Conner: Listen up! Hey, hey…. LISTEN TO ME. You all need to calm down, so I can tell you what I have decided is in the best interest of the Smurphy kids. All the staff stared at him, silently waiting for him to say something. Only one person spoke out in a mad tone... Mr. Mitchell: Now let me be clear here! What you are about to tell us is a decision you made all by yourself without adding what we might think or what we might want to contribute to this decision. We all love the Smurphy kids, and it should not just be a decision that one person makes by themselves. Mr. Conner stares angrily back at Mitchell as he slams his hands on the table and says…… Mr. Conner: If I were you, Mr. Mitchell, I would keep that mouth of yours closed, or you will be out of a job. Let us not forget who signs your paycheck. Now the decision I made is that Andy is going to get sent to the “Green Facility”. Rosabell is going to the “Orange Facility,” and William is going to the “Red Facility”. He sits down in his chair as he looks around the room waiting for one of them to respond. Mr. Bones: Wait a damn minute! Am I hearing you correctly? We’re separating all of them doesn’t even make any sense. Mitchell interrupts Bret as he slams his fist on the table, while he stares angrily at Conner. Mr. Mitchell: Are you f*****g kidding me? What the Hell Mr. Connor? This is a damn sibling facility for crying out loud. Has it not occurred to you that our mission statement says “This facility keeps siblings together while finding loving homes that want to give them the love they need, without being apart from each other?” Have you not thought about the impact it is going to have on these kids if you separate them now! They have already lost everything! And I mean everything! Ms. Joy stands up as she walks towards the door and pauses as she turns and faces Conner, pointing her index finger angrily while yelling… Ms. Joy: This is going against everything we have accomplished over the years in this facility. This is going to get around. Every sibling placement that comes from the department of Family services will know what we have done. We would be sending a message that we no longer keep siblings together, and that were just like the rest of those foster homes and group homes where siblings if a family doesn't want one of them. What the hell is wrong with you? In a disappointing tone, Mr. Conner responds back. Mr. Conner: SHUT UP! And sit-down Ms. Joy. As the director of this facility and your boss, this is what is happening. It is what is best for the Smurphy children. Separating them will keep all of them safe. Mr. Mitchell continues to stare daggers at Conner as he gets madder with everything coming out of his mouth. Mr. Mitchell: What the hell? We have kept them safe for almost 4 years now, and suddenly we’re sending them off to other facilities. Frustrated, mad, tired and exhausted, Conner lets out a long sigh as he leans back in his chair and looks around at his staff as he says… Mr. Conner: Everybody, please take a deep breath and relax. I understand you are all upset about this situation! I am as well. The Smurphy kids have been with us for almost 4 years now. I get it. I understand your frustration. They are family to us. We all must understand though, these kids have been placed in too many different homes together. It just did not work out well with any family for all of them. Now we have a bigger problem on our hands to deal with. The Smurphy’s kids’ mom is out of prison, and I have been told she is incredibly angry and resentful! Mr. Mitchell: Who even informed you that their mom is out of prison? Ms. Joy turns and faces Mr. Conner, with concern and worry in her voice as she takes a sip of her water, then proceeds and says…..
