CHAPTER 1: THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM
Savannah’s POV  I stared at my opponent warily as she locked her eyes with mine. Her green eyes sparked with determination as she gave me an evil smirk and I realised this was it. She was going to attack at any moment now… As she raised her hand and a blue spark formed in her hand, one of my hands flew to my belly, protecting my unborn baby while I raised my other hand, calling to the energy particles. The process, which appeared tedious just over a few months ago, now felt as easy as breathing. The energy I beckoned floated around me like puppies waiting for the orders of their master.  A shimmery light surrounded her as her fiery red hair flew around her and, as quick as a viper, she threw the blue bolt that sparked with electricity. She was fast, too fast. I had to give her that. But I was faster still.  I watched the deadly electrical magic which could kill me even if it reached anywhere near me, as if in slow motion. As it reached midway, I swiped my hand lazily, and the fiery spark dissipated into mere dust particles before scattering into the wind harmlessly. Ha! Take that, you witch! I looked up and smirked at the pissed off red haired she-devil and she narrowed her eyes at me suspiciously. I watched her for a moment, gauging if she was going to try another attack and relaxed, knowing she wasn’t. “Damn it, Savannah! How do you do that every time? Each time I think this is the time I could best you and become a badass, but then you would burst my bubble by swatting off my awesome attacks as if it is child’s play for you. What black magic are you doing?” My best friend glowered at me, her green eyes literally sparking with her annoyance. She would have looked a lot more threatening if she wasn’t this cute looking. And maybe if she had a little more height on her than the meager five feet she had. But I didn’t dare to voice out my opinion because she had a temper that belied her size and I didn’t want to be a victim of the infamous redhead's temper again. “What? Why are you making that face at me?! I am trying to be a kick-ass witch here and you are looking at me as if you are watching a cute toddler having a tantrum. Don’t make me mad because you never know if the next time will be the time you can’t defend yourself from my awesome attack!” Tia bellowed, and I bit my lip to keep my laugh from spilling out. My bestie was so cute! “Ugh!” She stomped her foot in annoyance before crossing her arms and pouting. And she claims to be a badass. Right… “Awww! Now, did you really want it to hit me?” I clutched my hand on my chest in fake hurt and pouted at my friend, giving the puppy eyes that I had mastered from her. “Of course not! You know I can stop it any moment!” She raised her head arrogantly before snapping her fingers and a bright blue spark appeared. She snapped her finger again, and the spark vanished as if it was never there.  “For someone who had trained for just under a month, you have astonishing control on your magic,” I complimented her, all traces of mischievousness vanishing from my tone. I was really proud of my girl. “I know right! I am the best!” She boasted, and I shook my head at her silliness. But I couldn’t help but worry about the truth in her statement.  Her energy levels were high; far too high to be a normal witch. My friend was a high witch and her electric power was one of the rarest powers witches ever possess. The witch council believes that she may belong to one of the high witch families which left to Earth decades ago, but to which one, they weren’t certain yet. As I thought of the witch council, I felt myself becoming somber.  “You are thinking of the council, aren’t you?” Tia asked knowingly. As always, she had read me like an open book and I wasn’t surprised she knew what I was thinking. “I just thought of how excited you were at the prospect of finding long-lost relatives here,” I said with a sigh. “Oh, that was when I didn’t know witches could be bitches. I was stupid to create a fantasy of a warm welcome in my mind on my own. Too bad it wasn’t exactly the happy union I expected,” she said with a wince, remembering the less than enthusiastic way the witches greeted her when she visited their realm for the first time about two weeks ago.  “They are just insecure. The witches have a different hierarchy than the other races and for them, the ruler is not determined by blood, but by power. The one with the highest magic becomes their leader regardless of their heritage and with you suddenly appearing with all this power, it jeopardizes their plans,” I said. “They see you as an outsider who may climb to the top out of the blue and they don’t know what to do with that realization. Just give it time and they will let you in.” “I don’t care to be let into their pretty little bubble. I am just lucky that they agreed to let me train here with you. I can’t imagine how they would act if I had joined the witch academy. And I don’t even want to rule their f*****g clan. Then why are they acting all high and mighty when I don’t give a damn about their politics?” She grumbled. “We know that, but they don’t know it. Just forget it and enjoy your powers like I do,” I said with a smirk. Then I waved my hand around, gathering her energy and making a pretty blue spark. I made it flutter around us like a butterfly before letting it dissipate, and Tia sighed. “We always felt like outsiders on Earth and now we know we really were. I guess I thought it would be different here, but apparently not. I am going to be the odd one out here too,” she complained. “Pot, meet kettle! Talk about odd! I am the oddest one in this entire dimension,” I said with a laugh, and Tia joined in. “I don’t need anyone else when I have you.” “Damn right, we don’t! We are awesome on our own and we don’t need anyone else!” I declared before pulling my bestie into a hug. Our sweet moment was broken by the sound of someone clearing their throat and I turned to see my mate standing there with a solemn expression on his gorgeous face. “Did I just hear you telling you don’t need anyone else beside her?” He deadpanned, and I gulped. Uh huh. Possessive Tristan is out to play! Time to run! “Uh? What? W-who?” I stuttered oh so eloquently. Damn it, Savannah! It’s time to make some witty comeback and save the day, not stutter like a moron! I turned to Tia for help and she gave a sheepish grin before shrugging innocently. Don’t you dare to ditch me! Too late because she was already backing away from the room. “See you later! Have fun!” she called out before practically running out of the training room with her tail tucked between her legs. Wretched traitor! I will get you for this, I swear! Slowly, I turned back to Tristan, who was still gazing at me expectantly. Oh right. I was supposed to give an explanation.  “Oh, it is not what you think!” Good going Savannah! I sighed before looking at him. “I was just comforting her. You know how much you mean to me. I just-“ “Relax, princess. I am just teasing you,” he said with a grin, and my shoulders dropped in relief.  “You scared me. I thought you were really angry!” “Of course not, my princess. I know you care for your friend and I am not petty enough to feel insecure about that.” I walked towards him with a smile.  “When you are the king, shouldn’t you be calling me your queen even if I technically don’t have the title yet?” “I don’t care about titles and technicalities. You are my princess and you will always be.” This guy just melts my heart every time, and I swear it will be just a puddle of goo at the rate he is going. Then he stiffened and looked around the room. The very room which was in shambles with all the magical attacks Tia and I had been throwing around. Uh huh. Here comes the tirade… “Were you practicing with Tia again?” He asked in a calm, collected voice which belied the storm brewing in his emerald green eyes.  Well, he already knew the answer, and I saw no point in lying. I gave a barely perceptible nod in his direction before looking away guiltily and spotted the painting on the wall. Hmm, pretty! “Look at me,” he said, destroying my attempt to avoid his penetrating gaze. I looked back at him guiltily, like a toddler about to be reprimanded for stealing cookies from the cookie jar. “How many times have I told you not to practice with Tia when Celeste is not here? Without her mentor’s guidance, Tia may lose control and she is too powerful for that to let happen. What if you get hurt?” He asked worriedly before looking down at my bump and his already fierce expression turned even more determined. “Relax, my darling mate. Nothing would happen. Tia has better control than you think and even if she loses control, she can’t harm me.” As if to emphasize my point, I gathered the remnants of the energy in the room effortlessly before letting sparks zoom around us.  “See. I have it under control.” “She may have control and you may have power, too. But accidents can happen and I am just asking you to not put yourself in dangerous situations. At least not when you are heavily pregnant and can’t move around freely like you used to,” he said, taking on the mother hen role he had adopted nowadays. “I worry about you and our baby when I see you in such precarious situations. At least for my sanity, keep away from your fun until after your delivery, princess.” “Don’t worry, Tristan. You trust me, don’t you? I will never let anything happen to our baby. A mother’s intuitions is always right and I know that I am going to deliver this baby well and healthy,” I assured my mate, who wasn’t the least bit taking my words in stride. “And yes, I relent. No more training with Tia until you say I can,” I said, making his eyes twinkle with relief and I was confused whether to be disappointed at missing the sparring with Tia or pleased that my mate was happy. I decided I was happy to see my mate’s good mood.  To be honest, it was good to see him being over protective. Even though I was only six and half months pregnant, he treated me as if I was ready to pop any moment. As an orphan who had craved for love once, it felt good to be treated like I was made of glass even though it could be annoying at times. I was brought out of my musings when Tristan crouched down in front of me before placing his head on my belly. “Hello baby. Did Momma tire you out today? Papa is waiting to meet you,” Tristan spoke to our baby, and I smiled seeing them bond even before our baby was born. Though we had been given the option to know the gender, we decided to keep it a surprise and wait until the delivery. For now, we just called our baby random pet names that would suit either gender. “I wish you were a pretty grey eyed princess just like your Momma.” Though the Kingdom was hoping our baby would be a boy so that they would have their next king, Tristan didn’t care about it. He insisted he wanted a girl first and we can have boys later. “What are you telling my son?” I asked, and he raised his brows at me. What? I wanted a mini Tristan with green eyes running around the palace. We can always have girls later. And even if we have a girl first and boys later, she is so becoming the Queen. Their stupid male heir rule be damned. First born is the heir, male or not. If it is male, good for them.  As if agreeing to my rebellious thoughts, the baby kicked, and I watched Tristan’s eyes turn tender as he looked at his hand with awe where he felt our baby’s kick. “See. He agrees with me,” I said triumphantly and Tristan grinned at me while standing up. “I love you, my beautiful princess.” “And I love you, my dream guy...” And then, he pulled me towards him and claimed my lips with his hot ones. My heart sang in bliss as I kissed him back just as hungrily, my tongue exploring every corner of his mouth. I clutched his silky hair in my hand while my other hand moved down his shoulders and to his waist. I could feel his strength as he held me against his body, offering a cocoon of warmth and safety. Yet, his hold was so gentle that it made me feel cherished, and I had to blink back tears of happiness. Such a perfect man…  Life is perfect!  Little did I know that it was just the calm before the storm…
