CHAPTER 1
“Will you come back?” his sister asked, carrying the crying little infant in her arms. “I will, sister. Please take care of Nath for us,” he says as he gets his pistol from the cabinet hidden under his bed. “Please, take care and stay safe.” “I will, Ladia.” Who would have known that his promise to come back didn’t really mean he would come back alive? Who would have thought that a supposed to be great night would end in something very tragic and traumatic? What could have happened if she stopped him from going? Would he still be here with them right now? “Auntie, you’re spacing out again,” a little girl said. Ladia snapped out of her thoughts, taking her right hand on her face as she wiped the slow drop of tears streaming down her face. This might have been caused by the heavy rain outside, wetting her whole window, just like the night her brother left to protect the girl he loved. This brings back a lot of memories and even if she tries to deny it, sometimes the pain just comes back whenever she sights the young girl, which is a fruit of George and his lover’s unconditional love. She takes a short breath before she turns around, facing the only little girl her brother asked her to take care of. She would still do it though. She loves her niece just as much. The said little girl is busy reading her books at her young age. She thinks this is preternatural but she is not surprised anymore. She came from an enchanted lineage, anyway. Nathalia Lux has the mind of a 6th grade student at the age of 4, which is something very extraordinary. Living like a normal one in a world of humans seems to be easy at first. Ladia starts to make herself comfortable and erases her worries away, thinking no one would notice that Nathalia is special. She is still half human after all. It is just that she is way more advanced than any of us. That is until one day, when Ladia is feeling the comfort of her bed, sleeping soundly as she hugs her pillow tight, Nathalia suddenly gets the courage and gut to go out without asking for permission. At eight years old, she discovers what sneaking out is. She knows that what she is doing is so wrong, but for some reason, she can’t find herself stopping it. The feeling of worry comes with the feeling of freedom. It was the first time. She walks and walks until she reaches the dangerous streets of the town. She looks around, trying to think of a destination to head to. But what she did not expect to see was people slowly crowding her as they extended their arms, holding her hands and face, just to check on the very strange thing she had, her glowing blue eyes. “My blue eyes don’t shine like that. Wow. What lenses did you use?” “Those don’t look like contact lenses.” “Should we report her to the police or doctors here in town?” She hears some of them say. After being isolated for so many years, being surrounded by a large number of people is definitely overwhelming and it stresses her out, causing her eyes to glow more, lightly slowly beaming out of her eyes like lasers. When people notice that this is not something normal at all, a man starts to carry her and take her to his car. “I’m giving her to the authorities,” he says. “More money for me.” Nathalia could not speak out of shock. She watches everything unfold in front of her eyes. The man attaches her seatbelt and also does his own. She was so scared that she started shaking on her seat. The man looks unbothered. On the other hand, he only cares about the money he will get once he gives her to the scientists in town. Tears start to stream down her face as she feels helpless, her mind screaming for help. She wishes she could send messages to her auntie through her mind right now. Suddenly, the car stopped. Thanks to her seat belt, she was not thrown away and hurt herself. “Give her back, you f***ing weirdo!” “Auntie!” she calls. “Nathalia!” For Nathalia, her attempt at telepathy worked. But for Ladia, it was the mother instinct in her that brought her to where Nathalia was. She can’t afford to lose the only girl that remains as her only memory of her beloved brother. She can’t afford to lose the girl that needs to be protected her whole life. “Open the car or I’m going to sue you for k********g my niece!” she yells. The man is unfazed. Instead, he just smirks and turns the engine on again, planning to run to the girl's auntie and continue his plan, to bring her to the authorities. It is at this moment that Nathalia knows she has to do something. She gets madder as each millisecond passes by. And so, without being able to keep everything in, she yells hard, her eyes glowing more than usual, shooting him like lasers. The car starts to shake and before he knows it, the car gets thrown away along with the criminal , Nathalia being left behind in the street, just witnessing everything. The car flips back and forth on the main street of the town and when it stops, it is silent. But what everyone is not prepared for is a large explosion that kills the man inside. Her auntie grips her hand tight as she says, “We’re leaving this place.” They immediately pack at home, her auntie shooting a glance outside time by time, making sure there is no one planning to take them into custody. “Lets go,” her auntie says. She has their bags slung on her shoulders as she grips the hand of her niece. They hurriedly go to the garage to get their cab and drive away. As they get inside, they see tons of people holding wildly lit torches and gallons of gasoline. “It’s the monsters!” As if on cue, Ladia immediately starts the cab and drives away, the people trailing them from behind. Some even manage to throw a torch at their vehicle, but for some reason, Nathalia’s abilities seem to work. With one look at the burning at the back, the fire starts to fade away. They drive straight under the dark skies, heading into somewhere they do not know that much they are familiar with. “Let’s go to the Village of Mysteria.”
