The wish
"Everyn? " A low voice echoes through the nearly empty room and I pull my head up from the screen of the laptop, looking over at the person calling my name. Across from my desk, in the door frame, A tall figure looms, with a bunch of papers in his hands. No! No! f**k no! not today! "Yes? " I reply, though my voice is small and I feel a lump forming in my throat, while everyone who is left in the office slowly raises their heads and all eyes turn to me, before they all cower back behind the screens. The man looks at me over his eyebrows and gestures for me to get up and follow. FUCK! I'm not sure what makes me feel worse! The fact that they were laying off people and I might be next, or that I might be asked to deliver more than I already am! I slowly pushed my chair back and fixed my shirt before taking in a deep breath and following after the man. At around 5'2, I feel like a little nugget following the man who's at least 6'2 and leads me down the corridors, while I fidget with the small rings on my finger, trying to distract myself from my own thoughts. He spots in front of one of the smaller conference rooms and opens the door, gesturing for me to enter. I forced a smile and rushed inside. There is no one else inside and I suddenly feel even more anxious. Why would I be summoned like this, on a Friday afternoon, by our f*****g CEO?! This man rarely even gets out of his office! And now, he was scrolling through a stack of papers, his eyes scanning them in silence as I walked past him. With a hand, the man that walked me all the way here gestured for me to take a seat and I did, trying to understand what was happening. with a gentle tired sigh, the man sets the stacks of papers in front of me, before taking off his glasses and pinching the bridge of his nose. "Caius quit. " he announced me shortly. Caius? who is Caius? I ask myself, but as I rake my brain for the name it suddenly dawns on me and I feel sick. No! Not in the middle of the campaign! I feel sick as I look at the stack of papers. "There's no one else with his skills and knowledge or any knowledge about the campaign at all.... " Well, that's not my problem, is it now?! I feel myself growing a bit angry, adding more to that stack of frustration that has been pilling up in the past few months. "So- " the man starts speaking again, his eyes moving to me and I want to get up, slap him and walk out of this place. But I can't! i need this freaking job! I need to be able to afford food and pay my rent and- f*****g s**t! Basically, I'm going to work the job of two people and still be paid the same amount. Great. freaking great! I'm handed the stack of paper and asked to sort this out until Monday! So, I'm supposed to be working extra hours without the decency of being paid. Amazing, isn't it?! By the time I returned to my work table, the office was completely empty. The lights had dimmed and the only person inside was Anne, who was still working on the last details of another major project my team was responsible for. When I drop the stack of papers on the desk, she immediately jumps and looks up at me, cursing under her breath and leaning in her chair. "What happened? You look like you need- " "I need someone to take me out! I'm not sure if for dinner, or with a damn gun at this point! " I huff and fall in my chair, pushing both my hands into my hair, letting out a loud groan. "I think d**k would be better than death. " The woman shrugs with a smirk on her face and I feel my eyes away, a bit shocked because of her vocabulary. When she sees the way my eyes round up in shock and horror she starts laughing, her laughter filling the whole room, and I've never been more grateful that everyone else was gone! "Oh come on! you look like you never- " she pauses when she notices the blush on my face. "Oh. My. Freaking . God!" she explains and shuts her laptop with incredible speed and power, making me think she was ruining it. "Don't tell me you haven't had good d**k in that long, Everyn! " she exclaims and I prey for the Earth to plot open and swallow me right now and here, because there is no way in hell I am going to continue this conversation with Anne right now! "We need to get out for drinks tonight! I know this amazing- " "I can't! " I interrupted her in a rush and looked away, taking in a deep breath and turning to face the stack of papers. "I need to get this done by Monday! Caius quit and, well, who else is better for the job than quiet little Everyn?! " I hissed out my frustration and threw my hands in the air. Anne turns silent and she swallows all her words, puffing her cheeks like a child as she tries to find a way around my complete denial of her unofficial invite to go get shitfaced. "That sucks, girl- " she mutters and she slowly gets up. "I'll get going though. It's already seven P.M. and I have a date- " she winks at me and grabs her bag. Yeah. Of course. Everybody had plans. it was Friday night! Of course everybody was out! Everybody but me. Begrudgily, I watched her walk away and leave me alone in this stupid office. *** Fuck this place! f**k my boss! f**k Caius! to hell with everyone and everything! To hell with office parties and pizza offered as gratitutde for our hard work! I need a raise! I need to be respected!- I sigh - I need a new job... At this point, I'm not even sure why I'm here! I've been working in this stupid place for three years and I've never gotten a promotion. Responsibilities have grown in number with every trimester of the year and yet, with everything that is happening in the world, I am not sure I should complain. At least, I still have a job, I can still afford a fancy flat and I can still support my lifestyle. Well, if eating instant noodles and calling it a dinner can be named a Lifestyle... The clock hits eleven P.M. by the time I make it out of the office building, my eyes red and puffy, and my mind a continuous swarm of thoughts. the sky above is peppered with stars . The streets are rather silent and I take a moment to just admire the sky and take in the fresh night breeze that whips my face and messes my hair. The stars flicker and I feel drawn to a specific one that the longer I stare at, it seems to move. And When I notice it, I understand it's a falling star. Quick! Make a wish! a tiny childish voice inside my brain chimes and I chuckle to myself as I watch the star drift across the sky. After a few short seconds, my eyes close and I take in a deep breath. I wish to be promoted! I wish that they'd all listen to my ideas! I wish for a clear mind to make the best decisions! And nonetheless, I wish for a lover to soothe my nerves after a week's work! Well, that's more than one wish, but you can't blame a girl for trying, right?! When my eyes open , they are still fixed on the falling star, that suddenly seems to change its course. That's odd... The more I look at it, I realize it had slowly started to grow in size and by the time I take another breath, I understand that it's coming right towards me! What. the. Actual-
