Prologue
DANIELLAH (4 years old.) “I have a surprise for you sweetie,” my father bents down as I stand at the door. My parents have been gone for 4days, it’s nice to see them again. “Okay daddy.” I smile at him as he picks me up. We walk outside the door to find my mama cradling something in her hands. “Ellah, this is Kai.” Mommy walks to us and opens the white blanket in her hand, “he is your baby brother.” Baby brother? Wait brother? As in son? That means— “We have an heir sweetie.” My mother’s eyes pool with tears while my brother’s eyes open. Immediately, I am mesmerized by the shade of green his beautiful big eyes reflect at me. His tiny nose wiggles as he yawns, showing toothless gums. He is so tiny. “It’s okay Ellah, say hi.” My father urges as Kai’s little hand peers out of the blanket, like he is reaching out to me. “Hi baby brother,” I smile at the little bean wrapped around in a fluffy blanket. He has gold hair like mommy and I but eyes like dad’s and I. He is perfect. (12 years old) “Mom and dad are fighting again.” Kai pushes my door open but only his voice echoes into my room. “I heard some of it.” “Some of what little guy?” I pat the bed and he come in. Malakai is very smart for an 8 year old. Too smart for his own good. “I heard the word divorce.” My heart stops as he looks up at me, “mommy said she wants a divorce Ellah.” Oh no. “I checked the internet for the meaning, and it means mommy is leaving soon.” His voice turns meek, “she said she wants to leave soon.” “It’s okay baby brother.” I hug him as a tear runs down his cheek. “I’ll still be here.” He nods before laying his head on my lap. I expect more tears to follow but they don't, he just looks out into nothing as I run my fingers through his hair. (16 years old) The weeks after my father’s press conference are overwhelming. Reporters follow us everywhere we go, they even showed up to the boys’ soccer match today. Kai stopped asking about mom once he read the newspaper and had his first fight because of it. He is 12years old and already in fights. Even worse, he doesn’t talk at home. He doesn’t talk to me or Chief Seeds. He only talks to Wu and Jonah, his best friends. I only see him smile when he’s with them too. It’s like losing mom meant he lost me too but I know it’s only because I look so much like her that it pains him to see me. “His majesty is ready to see you now.” Arina, the castle assistant nods ushering me in. I’m still in my school uniform. I came here straight from school because today is the only day Kai comes home late. He’s having dinner with the Clarke twins because it’s make-your-own-pizza Friday. “Yes Daniellah?” My father doesn’t even look up from his papers. He’s been calling me Daniellah ever since mom left and just like Kai, I fear he only sees her when he looks at me too but that’s not an excuse for being a bad father. While all this has been happening, my father has been hauled up in his office since the press conference so we haven't seen him in a long time. “Your majesty,” I greet. He looks tired, defeated, older than he is. He doesn’t look like my dad anymore, he doesn’t even act like him so why should I act like Ellah? “I want to withdraw from the Elite Academy.” I keep my head high and my words get the attention I'll never get as he raises his head to look at me. “No.” He returns to his papers but I step closer. I think of the blood I saw in Kai’s hands as I cleaned him up after that fight. How his golden hair has faded into a light brown that is closer to dad’s hair. But his looks are where their resemblance stops. I will protect him from turning into our father. “I already did it. I am to start at Kai’s school on Monday,” I place the transfer papers on his desk. “Daniellah—” “You don’t care.” I look him in the eyes, “you don’t care about Kai or me and that’s okay.” It’s really not but this is who he is now, who he has been for a while. “But you lost a wife. Our country lost a queen but Kai and I—” tears well up in my eyes. “We lost more than you, more than anyone. We lost a mother and a father and I’ll be damned if Kai, loses his sister too.” “You’re out of line.” His voice is cold, detached and firm. Just like he is now. “And you’re a bad father.” My nails dig into my palm. “ENOUGH!” His loud voice makes me blink. My father has never shouted at me, growing up he’d scold Kai for being naughty but never me so its the motivation I need to go on, “You are returning to E.A on Monday. Kai is fine at his school with his friends—” “No.” I don’t need to shout like him. “I wasn’t asking for permission but if you refuse, I will take Kai and you will never see us again.” “You’re threatening your own father.” He doesn’t remove the disappointment in his voice. “My father left with my mother so I’m making a promise to my King.” I turn around and walk to do the door. “Fine.” He sighs, “if you want to be with Kai then I’ll enroll him into EA but you’re not leaving.” I should have known, should have questioned why he wanted me to stay there so bad. But I was thinking of my brother, only cared about him. “Only if Kai agrees.” I walk out. (20 years old) “I have something I need to tell you,” Aiden hasn't said a word till now. He's been acting weird since I arrived at his apartment an hour ago. “Okay but what do you want for dinner?” I open his fridge only for him to slam it close. I look up at his brown eyes. Aiden has beautiful coffee eyes but they are red for some reason, like he has been crying or smoking and since he's a health freak I think its the latter. "What is going on?" I'm alarmed now. “I’m sorry…” he connects our hands. The next words to leave his mouth not only break me but they kill me. I think my boyfriend just killed me. “How could you?!” I bust through my father’s office doors. “How could you do this to me?!” I charge at his desk, ignoring the men around the boardroom table. My father knew I was coming, I saw reporters at the airport. Everyone knows I’m here. “I’m guessing Aiden finally told you.” He dismisses the members and they scramble out like they are on fire. “Yes, he did!” My fist ball, “he told me that you paid him and half of the boys in my 12th grade class to—” “Look out for you" he fills in. “I told you not to date the boy but you were always so hell-bent in defying me so this what you get.” This is what I get? Is he serious? “You are my father!” I slam my hands on his desk. I have never shouted or acted like this in front of him but he doesn't seem surprised at all. “Exactly. I am your father and your days of defying me are done!” He matches my tone and I flinch back like he slapped me across the cheek. “You’re withdrawing from Oxford immediately.” “Over my dead body!” I bite. “Don’t test me child, your in-laws don’t want you in London they want you in the states.” He doesn't spare me a glance as he goes back to his papers. “What are you talking about?” My heart is pounding against my chest. “You’re getting married in 3months Daniellah. You can resume university” he looks up, “after your wedding.” And just like that, my father just buried me.
