Cemetery weather
She walked slowly, on purpose but not so slow as to give it away that she was lingering. As a child, her grandfather would walk her through the pathways here as a shortcut to their favorite coffee shop, where they would go every saturday morning, a tradition of sorts. Her grandparents were old school when it came to their beliefs on marriage, children and church, yet burial is where they differed. Her grandmother could never stand the thought of being “maggot food” as she called it, while her grandfather refused to be burned when he knew he was heaven bound. So every saturday, she would walk the three blocks to their home of forty years and together, she and him would walk through the cemetery. “It’s so peaceful here, I want a place my loved ones can visit.” He would muse and she would nod, at times agreeing and others refusing to think of when he was gone. Yet now, two years after his death, she took this walk alone, putting fresh flowers on his grave and visiting with him. It felt strange to talk to a tombstone, but there she was. “I’m not going to lie, grandpa, school kind of sucks this year.” She grinned, looking up at the birds flying amongst treetops instead of the inscription giving proof that he was a loved father, grandfather, brother and friend. “You always said I had the brains and the guts for a double major but this history class is going to kick my ass–I mean, butt.” She still couldn’t bring herself to curse in front of her elders, who she knew would disapprove. She chatted and mused to the headstone for another half an hour until she felt the wind pick up and the prick of eyes on her. She could never prove it but she would feel it, following her home from the cemetery no matter how convoluted of a path she took or where she stopped. Yet no matter if she felt the eyes on her or not, she always took the turn closest to the church, where the older headstones lay. One always drew her attention, a large obelisk engraved with simply “MY BELOVED” No name or date, although one could guess based on the tombstones around it. She always felt a pull there, even as a child. Her grandfather mused that perhaps the spirits liked her, that they had come down from heaven to guide her, although she could never be sure, as ever since she visited the tomb for the first time had she felt the eyes on her. IT was after that that the dreams had started too, of the same two lovers, stretched across time, never aging, always in love. She stared harshly at the white stone, willing it to explain itself when her phone buzzed in her pocket, nearly tearing her out of her skin in fright. “Donna, you nearly made me s**t myself!” “Well I’m about to make if you if you don’t answer your phone next time, you nearly had me coming to find you! Find my friends says you never left the cemetery, you’ve been there all afternoon, Elizabeth!” Donna was panicked, threatening to drive an hour to come check on her and only then did she check her watch, four-thirty? She’d been there since nine, how long had she been lost in her musings? “I’m sorry! I, uh, lost track of time?” Eliza was sheepish, she knew she was in trouble with her best friend when she called her by her full name. “How about I come visit after class on Tuesday? It’s only twenty minutes from there.” Her dreaded history class was on a separate campus from the main one, which she didn’t really have a choice on since it’s only offered once a year and she needed it to graduate in the spring, and although only twice a week, she was already not looking forward to driving that far for the whole semester, especially when she had to leave right from her two previous classes. “Alright.” Donna said after a moment, as if mulling it over and not looking forward to her friend coming to visit. “But you’re picking up takeout on your way to me. I’ll call it in if you pick it up. And you have to read the latest entry from that dream journal of yours, Leo is just so….” She trailed off, trying to decide the best word to describe the man in perfect detail, “...Steamy.” Donna settled on, eager to hear more. Eliza frowned through the phone, beginning her walk back to her apartment, which she claimed to have picked because it was close enough she didn’t have to pay for on campus parking, when in reality it was the closeness to the cemetery and her grandmother. “I hate how much of a fan you are of these weird dreams, they can get dark at times too. Lately, she’s been giving me the feeling like it’s about to end, you know? Like she knows she’s about to lose Leo.” For years, ever since seeing the tombstone for the first time, she had dreamt of two lovers, Leo and Anna, never in order yet recently, the clothing styles had been the most modern, she recognised the Elizabethean era from her studies and the feeling of Anna that she channeled were becoming dark, withdrawn, and a little scary. It made her not want to sleep, although she had learned that daydreaming during class was not good either, better to dream of Anna’s past and journal it in the morning than doze off into a trance like state during class. Donna pulled her back to reality, out of autopilot as she reached her stoop, “This is the love story for the ages, Liz, they fight for each other, they love each other, I’m telling you, this would be a bestseller, sell it in installments by era.” She had suggested this before but it felt wrong, when she dreamed it was as though she was Anna, she would never betray her like that, she couldn’t. In a way, she felt in love with Leo, his handsome smile, his soft caresses at night, she claimed to everyone she was too busy with school but in reality, how could anyone hold a candle to this man who had loved her for centuries? Yet still, she reminded herself that Leo loved Anna, not her, never her. “I don’t think so, Don. Hey, I appreciate you calling me, I’m home now. Thanks for checking in, I’m going to shower and head to bed.” The key turned the lock and she stepped into her apartment, wondering just how long she had stood before the old tomb and how long she had felt someone watching her before she simply accepted it.
