Chapter 1 - Rejection and Revenge
NIA The feeling of Kylian’s fingers burned against my cheek as the sound of his slap echoed throughout the pack house. The music of the party halted as I fell on my back, looking up at the man I had just called mate. When I came to the future alpha’s party, I never anticipated his brother would turn out to be my mate. “I will never accept an omega as my mate.” Kylian’s voice cut through the mood of the party, and anyone who wasn’t looking at us before all stared now. My chest tightened as I looked up at the man who was supposed to be my fated mate. It was said that the Moon Goddess blessed werewolves with a mate that would make them stronger and better, yet I couldn’t help but wonder if that was true. All it took was one look from Kylian for him to know I wasn’t good enough for him. I rubbed my stinging cheek, but it couldn’t erase the pain in my heart. “But we’re mates.” My voice was feeble, and I hated it. Despite being an omega, I never wanted to appear weak in the pack, but even my parents couldn’t stand me. The bruises on my ribs were proof of that. Kylian towered over me, his face hard with indignation as he looked down at me. “Did you honestly think you would be accepted by the alpha bloodline? You must be stupid on top of weak.” Sniggers echoed around the room. These people were supposed to be my classmates, but they never cared about me. The pack barely acknowledged omegas as anything other than worker bees who did menial tasks. Rage burned deep within me as the taunting laughter pierced my soul. I was foolish to think Kylian would ever want me. For the briefest moment when my wolf, Alana, whispered, “Mate,” I saw a different future. Kylian was the brother of the future alpha. If he was my mate, then no one would ever bully me again. That hope was replaced by shock the second his hand hit my face. Embarrassment quickly followed, but now all that remained was pure, unfiltered fury and resentment. I pushed myself off the ground. I was an omega, but I wasn’t going to stand for this kind of treatment. I tried to make myself appear as tall as possible, but it was impossible to compete with Kylian’s height. He had the blood of an alpha, which made him larger in every way possible. “And you must be a bigot to reject me without giving me a second thought. If you were truly the son of an alpha, you wouldn’t be afraid of a little omega being your mate. You would know that your mate bond would only make me stronger. It wouldn’t make you weaker, so I guess you’re also the stupid one.” No one talked to the alpha’s family the way I just had, and the murmurs spilling through the room confirmed I was either bold or idiotic for spurting such strong words to Kylian. “How dare you insult an alpha,” Kylian growled. “You’re not an alpha, nor will you be. Perhaps that’s why your brother is the future alpha, and not you.” “Why you little!” Kylian raised his hand to hit me again. I closed my eyes in preparation for the smack, listening to the classmates eager to see Kylian push me down again. Only he never made contact with my face. I cracked my eyes open, shocked to see Roman, the future alpha, holding Kylian’s arm. “Now, now, brother. It’s not worth wasting your energy on an omega like this, especially not one who isn’t even beautiful.” Roman looked at me and smirked. He was several years older than Kylian, and even though he demeanor was calmer, there was something unsettling about the way he looked at me. It was as if he was ready to devour me whole. “She insulted me.” Kylian’s entire body shook with rage. Not only had an omega talked back to him, but now his brother was scolding him in front of me. The rage in his eyes made it clear he was ready to tear me apart. “There are better ways to handle a wolf who disrespects the alpha’s family.” Roman dropped Kylian’s hand and turned his full attention to me. He grabbed my chin before I could react and pulled me closer to him. His fingers dug into my jaw, which hurt worse than Kylian’s slap. Get out of here, Alana begged. Her instincts intertwined with my own, making it very clear I was in danger. I tried to squirm out of his grip, but there was nothing I could do against his strength. “If an omega likes to use her mouth to insult you, all you have to do is show her a better way to use her mouth.” Roman forced me onto my knees, and a sharp pain radiated through my legs where I hit the ground. He reached for his belt and started unfastening it. Gasps and cheers filled the room as it became clear what Roman had planned for me. Panic rose through my veins, and I knew I had to get out of there before Roman could finish what he was doing. I turned and started to scramble away from the future, but his fingers tangled in my brown hair and yanked me backwards. “You can’t run from me,” Roman purred. I grabbed my hair where his hands were and tried to pull him free, but I was helpless and weak. “Let me go!” I screamed and thrashed, refusing to give up. I knew I didn’t have a chance because of my omega bloodline, and I hated it. I hated that my own father knew he could hit me because even though he himself was an omega, he had the advantage of being a male. I hated that the kids at school thought that they could bully me, because there was no one who would stand up for me. I hated that the future alpha thought he could do whatever he pleased to me in front of everyone in the pack house, because no one would say anything against him. I met the eyes of several classmates, tears now streaming down my eyes, but not a single one met my gaze. They looked away, either not caring about what happened to me or too afraid to say anything against Roman. I felt helpless and weak, and I never wanted to feel that way again. I closed my eyes and prayed to the Moon Goddess herself to save me, since there was no one else who would care about a poor omega like me. “Stop.” Kylian’s deep voice unexpectedly rang out, and for the first time, Roman actually paused. “Excuse me?” Roman lifted an eyebrow as if in disbelief that his brother would challenge him. “She’s my mate. Let me handle her,” Kylian said, his voice sharp and filled with power. Even though he wasn’t destined to be the future alpha, there was no denying the strength in his voice. “I see you feel left out of the fun. Fine then. I’ll find some other slut to have fun with.” Roman threw me to the ground in front of Kylian, and I felt a crack in my wrist as I tried to brace myself. “She’s your problem to deal with. Don’t mess it up this time.” Kylian grabbed me by the arm and hoisted me to my feet. I tried to protest against him, but he only dug his fingers into my skin. He didn’t stop until we stood outside of the pack house, but he didn’t let go of me. “Let me go!” I shouted, struggling against his hold. “Enough!” he shouted, grabbing my other arm and forcing me to stop. “Unless you want my brother to come back.” The threat of Roman returning made my body freeze. Kylian sighed. “Thank the goddess you finally stopped. I need you to listen to me closely about what’s going to happen. I’m going to reject our mate bond, and you will accept it without a fight. Then you will leave this pack and disappear forever. If Roman ever sees you again—” He cut himself off, shaking his head. “Never come back here, understand?” I nodded, unsure if I understood anything about what was happening. I could still feel the lingering pain of Kylian’s fingers against my cheek, but it almost felt like he was trying to help me. The reality of it was that he wasn’t trying to help me. He was trying to get rid of me. He couldn’t have his rejected omega mate who had the audacity to stand up to him stick around to ruin his reputation. Kylian held onto me as his eyes burned into my. For the briefest moment, he hesitated as he looked at me. “I, Kylian Haeil, reject you, Nia James as my mate.” I thought it would hurt more when my mate rejected me, but I wasn’t sad or broken. I was angry. His rejection was just another reminder of everything that was wrong with this pack. I was an omega, but that didn’t mean I was worthless. I held my chin up as I responded. “I accept your rejection.” Kylian dropped his hold on me, and his entire body deflated. I took a step back, holding onto the rage that had taken over my heart. This was not the end for me. This was just the beginning. “I will leave this pack as you requested, but I want you to know that this will not be the last time you ever see me. I swear on my life that I will get revenge on you and your family. I will make sure they suffer as much as I have.” Kylian’s body tensed at my words, but he was too shocked to say anything. Before he got his senses back, I turned on my heels and ran away from the life I knew, determined to find a way to get my revenge.
