My name is Amaris, and this is my third and final year in the lottery arena. Male wolves are drawn at random every year for a chance to capture and claim a rare shewolf in the arena. They outnumber us 10 to 1. My wolf, Annukka and I have evaded capture the two previous years. If we can make it out of this last lottery without being claimed by a male wolf, we'll win our freedom. Seven days. That’s all that separates us from the outside. And if things weren’t complicated enough, I’ve met my fated mate. He’s been selected for this year’s lottery arena.

Inspection day
AMARIS 19 years old The morning blaring of the barrack alarm pulled me from my sleep. I hated that thing. You would think they let us sleep in once in a while, but no. I sighed as I threw my blanket back and climbed down out of my bunk. There were 14 other shewolves housed with me in barrack A. I was the oldest at almost 20. The youngest girl Marie, had just turned 16 the week before. I’d been 14 years old when our world went to s**t, and three years later I participated in my first lottery arena. I used the word “participate” loosely. It’s not like I or any of the other girls here had a choice. The human population of the world had been all but desomated when they’d finally dropped the bombs. Shifter males all over the world had survived due to their accelerated healing abilities and high metabolisms. The radiation fall out had quite a different effect on the shewolves though. We’d never been able to heal as quickly as our male counterparts. Roughly eighty percent of the shewolf population worldwide had succumbed to radiation sickness just like the humans. There were 4 barracks in my pack that were home to the young and unmated shewolves. Each one housed roughly 15 wolves. That’s all there was. Just 60 of us compared to nearly 700 single male wolves. Our pack was one of the largest surviving dens in the United States. The year I turned 17 the elders had decided the only fair way for male wolves to mate with a female was by a lottery system. Every male gained their name in the lottery the year he turned 21. A male could earn additional spots in the lottery and increase their chances of being selected by doing something extraordinary for his pack. This method had proven to be very effective and made the male wolves incredibly productive. In three short years they’d practically built our town from the ground up. We had running water, electricity, small shops and even a medical clinic. “Amaris? Helloooo, anybody home?” Marie asked, waving her hand in front of my face. I pretended to be annoyed even though I wasn’t. Marie reminded me of my little sister Ava; I’d lost her to the fall out. Like so many of us here, I was the last shewolf of my family. “Yeah yeah, I’m here, what do you want,Pip?” I asked her. I’d taken to calling her pipsqueak immediately or Pip for short. She had one of the tiniest wolves I think I’d ever seen. She was maybe the size of a chocolate lab if she was lucky. She was pretty though. She had strawberry blonde hair and bright green eyes beaming from her heart shaped face. This would be her first year inside the lottery arena. My heart broke for her, I knew the male wolves would rip each other to shreds to just get near her. I could only pray she was captured by a kind caring male. I was the only female to participate in multiple arenas. This would be my third and final year. I’d gone uncaptured the first two years. I had pleaded to the elders that if I could make it three years without being captured then I should be awarded my freedom from any male wolf, unless I choose him on my own. They decided to institute the rule that if any shewolf could avoid capture for three years then she would be released to live amongst the population. I was determined to make it, I didn’t want to be forced into mating with any male wolf simply because he was a good tracker and captured me. “Can I borrow your shampoo? I ran out and we don’t get new stock until next week.” Marie asked me, already shifting through my chest. I rolled my eyes. “By all means, help yourself.” I told her, yawning. “Aren’t you going to get ready. You know inspection is today, don't you?” She asked me, snagging my shampoo and conditioner. “Yeah, I’m aware. Believe me the less desirable I am, the better, Pip. I showered last night anyway.” I added when she scrunched up her nose at me. I knew it wouldn’t matter what I did. I had a target on my back. Some of the more aggressive males loved the cat and mouse game, the hunt. I’d earned quite the reputation by going uncaptured my first two years. They called me “Red” due to my wolf’s red coat. Jesus, you haven’t shut up once this morning. Annukka thought inside my head. Good morning to you too Annukka. I thought to her. Ready to give these males a run for their money this year? I asked. I knew she had different feelings about mating then I did. She wanted a mate unlike me, but she wasn’t willing to settle. She was very picky. Hey, speak for yourself. I’m not picky, I just have high standards Amaris. I rolled my eyes at… well, a part of myself and got on with my morning. The unmated females were required to wear red, it made us easier to spot and keep track of. Our safety was the number one priority of the pack. Our barracks were heavily guarded by both wolves in natural form and human form. We marched in a row along the fence to the dining hall. We would eat breakfast first before going to the main hall for inspection. I shuddered at the thought of what was coming. We were stripped bare and inspected in front of the upcoming group of males. The elders said the reasoning was to make them want to be even more protective. If they could get a small glimpse of what they could win, they’d be even more willing to go above and beyond for the pack. I hated it, as did all the shewolves... well, 98% of them did. This was exactly why I wanted my freedom, I didn’t think it was fair I had to continually be subjected to this, or that godforsaken arena. It wasn’t my fault I was just better at evading my male counterpart. I’d been blessed with my wolf Annukka, she was absolutely incredible. You’re not so bad yourself doll. She told me. I smiled at the thought. Just as I was about to enter the hall, Annukka perked up in my mind. What’s going on? I asked her. Do you smell that? She asked me, I could visualize her sticking her nose in the air. No, I don’t smell any… my reply was stopped short when the most amazing scent filled my nostrils. It smelled...like the ocean on a warm summer's days. Mate. Annukka said the one word that made me almost faint. That wasn’t possible anymore was it? No one found their true mate anymore, did they? There just weren’t enough of us around anymore. I hadn’t heard of such a thing since before the bombs. A row of male wolves passed the other side of the electrified fence. They were making their way into the main hall, to ready themselves for our inspections. s**t. Our mate is in that group. Annukka thought to me. s**t was right. How was I going to get inspected in front of my mate and a group of 39 other men? Annukka, you have to keep it together in there. You can’t release your pheromones in a room full of unmated males, it’ll cause a frenzy. I told her nervously. I’ll do my best Amaris, it’s not like I have complete control over it, you know? She snapped back at me. Things were about to get really interesting.
