Crimson river
Crimson. That was what the color the stream had become. The clear and translucent water now carried the color of blood as it wound its way through the dense jungle. Rays of soft light speared from above, forcing their way through the lofty trees and the stream glistened magnificently. The air in the jungle smelt of blood and destruction while the stream swerved its way around the rocks and boulders, passing by the trees with vigor. Unlike the previous times when it danced all along its path merrily, this time, it carried with it a sense of melancholy and grief. The murmurs and whispers from the stream in the dense jungle were like the cries of anguish as it wept for the people whose blood it now carried. Although the rays of the sun somehow made their way and illuminated the place, it could not eradicate the cold and a cool breeze kept blowing, carrying with it the smell of blood and death. It was mortifying and the entire place looked despondent even though the sun's rays brightened the place as much as they could. The jungle was unusually silent. Other than the burbles of the stream, there was no other noise. Even the birds and insects that could not stop themselves from chirping did not make a sound, as though they were also aggrieved by the gruesome incident. The once beautiful place still had its charm, only this time, corpses lay all around with thick, crimson liquid spattered everywhere. The sight of blood and dead bodies was daunting and the air was suffocating. But not for Allerick. He stared at the people who had lost their lives to him and clenched his fists as anger surged through him. His eyes were filled with fury and hatred and grief. His heart was wrenching in pain while his mind was a mess. This was not the first time he had faced such a situation. Yet, the pain was as unbearable as ever. His eyes did not linger anywhere else and were fixed on the men who now lay dead around him. Twenty-seven warriors. All of them, who had entered the jungle under his orders, now lay dead in front of him and, for the first time, the man who the world kneeled at, dropped to the ground immediately. “Alpha.” One of his men who was standing right behind him attempted to hold him. But the man shook his head as he kneeled at the people he had lost and who he would not be seeing ever. Lowering his head, Allerick bent his body as though he was praying for his sins. ‘Please forgive me.’ He begged, the guilt and despair filling his heart immediately. ‘It was I who pushed you to this state. I should have been careful and not have been reckless in my decisions. Please forgive me.’ He begged and tears of anguish escaped his eyes, startling all the men who were watching him. Although this was not the first time they had seen their Alpha cry, it still pained them to see the mighty man they respected and admired in such a miserable situation. He looked nothing like the ruler he was. Instead, in his place was a man who was mourning the loss of lives, the loss of people and the loss of self-trust. Allerick was devastated to see his men who now lay dead. Every one among them had been murdered brutally and an unbearable ache coursed through him as he let out a loud wail that echoed through the jungle, scaring all the birds and animals away into seclusion. Even the men who had accompanied him took a few steps away from him, frightened by his terrifying reaction. The aura around him changed suddenly and everyone could sense the wolf in him fighting for dominance. Allerick’s hands started trembling as the wolf in him demanded control. But he suppressed the animal as much as he could. Once the animal came out, it would be impossible to control it, let alone stop it from creating a mess and unleashing its wrath on innocent people. Allerick gritted his teeth as he clenched and unclenched his hands. The battle between him and his wolf was intense and, slowly, he was losing it. But Allerick did not give up. He could not give up. It was not the right time for his wolf to come out. He had a lot to deal with and allowing himself to lose control would only add more to his troubles. After an intense fight, Allerick somehow managed to suppress the animal for the time being. But he knew that it was only temporary. He had to stay in control and make sure that he did not give a chance to the wolf in him to let go. Otherwise, considering how infuriated the animal was, he would surely end the world in his rage. It took him some time to control his emotions and by the time he was done, his eyes had returned to normal. He wiped the dried tears off his face and stood up. Glancing at the dead people one last time, he turned around and faced his men who were waiting for his orders. “Bring the men back to the kingdom. They will be sent off with all respect and proper procedure. Prepare for their funeral and inform their family members. Today, we have lost twenty-seven brilliant warriors and the entire kingdom of Avolire must see what our brave men have gone through.” Allerick ordered, his face devoid of any emotion. From his face, the men could not decipher what he was thinking. But his tone was enough to send chills down their spines. Though he was impassive, he was irate and soon, the world would know what would happen to people who dared to go against him. This was just the beginning. More blood would spill and more dead bodies would roll on the floor. Only next time, it would be the enemies. Since they dared to harm Allerick’s men, then they must be prepared to face the consequences. And considering how ruthless and terrifying he was, especially to his enemies, there would soon be a battle, one where Allerick would surely be the winner.
