Chapter Three

Jett “You not get lucky tonight?” I turned to the man locking up, swearing under my breath as I gazed at him. Then I shrugged and gave him a grin. “s**t happens” “More like a pretty blonde happened” He added with a wink. “No pretty blondes went anywhere near my junk” I added with a laugh, the nearest I had got was the girl from earlier that night and that had ended with her slapping my face and storming off. Oh well. Shit happened. “Not even one wearing oversized sweatshirts , who failed miserably at covering the bruises on her face” I grinned. Harper, hiding behind her baggy clothes with the face of an angel . Who knocked back scotch like a biker. Yeah she had definitely piqued my interest. And her utter indifference was refreshing as hell. “Yeah well…” I shrugged again. “What are the chances of her coming back, girl like her” I folded my arms across my chest. Yeah Harper was definitely interesting. Or maybe it was her lack of interest in me that made it impossible to get her out of my mind. “Unless you managed to get her address or number?” “That’s more your style Jett, I am a taken man” I laughed . Taken, my ass. “I meant for the job” “We don’t have any jobs going” He tossed the keys at my head and I caught them out of mid air. Dammit, I swore under my breath. Should have gotten her number , even if I had lied to get it. “Don’t think you will need it though Jett” “And why is that?” I swung my leg over my bike and froze , following the line of his pointing figure. “Oh” The figure was walking fast, a white plastic bag swinging from her hand. Her shoulders hunched as she sulked along the other side of the road. Walking along like the promenade was usually done slowly, people stopped to look out over the ocean. It was a pretty sight with the stars shining over head but the figure was almost jogging. Every now and then she threw a look over her shoulder and seemed to hunch down on herself. She was obviously scared of something. Was someone following her? I swept my eyes behind her, no one. “It look like she’s running from something to you?” I asked. “Yeah but I can’t smell a damn thing” He wrinkled his nose “nothing out of the ordinary anyway” I had to agree with him. Garbage and stale beer tickled my nostrils. “Maybe she fancies some company” I grinned , “maybe she does” His meaning was clear but my legs had been moving even before my brain caught up. Hadn’t I just been kicking myself for not getting her number? And here she was again. Rushing out of the good side of town with her plastic bag and a ball cap pulled down low over her face. If my eyes hadn’t been as good as they were I wouldn’t have recognised her. My legs made short work of crossing the road and for a second hers faltered , she paused and even from the distance I could hear her startled breath. Shit I had frightened her. “Hey” I called out to her. Sneaking up was a bad idea I could already tell she was spooked. “Hey Harper” I knew her eyes weren’t as good in the dark as mine, she was human after all but they grew saucer round as she watched me approach. “Oh” Her hand fluttered to her chest as I stepped into sight, the orange light of the street lights finally letting her see who had been calling her. “Oh sorry I thought .. nice to see you again. Jett wasn’t it” “Expecting someone else sweetheart?” “No of course not,no” She was lying I could tell from the way her eyes lingered over my shoulder. Even with me not six foot from her she was still on edge. Afraid. What the hell was she running from? The person who had bruised up her face. “Where are you off to in such a hurry?” She shrugged “back to my hotel, I just wanted to grab some food before I went back. I forgot to eat earlier” I grabbed the plastic bag from her hands. And frowned at its contents as she made a grab to get it back. “That doesn’t look like enough food for someone who forgot to eat today” I handed it back to her and she blushed. The bag had a single ready made out of date sandwich and a bottle of water in it. Not enough food for a gnat. “I’m not a great eater, got to watch the figure” She tried to make a joke of it and my eyes swept over her, I let her know I was looking and her cheeks coloured up . “Your figure is amazing” “Well it’s nice seeing you again Jett, I should get myself ho…” She was going to say home but stopped herself. Interesting. “Hey I was going to go grab some food, would love some company if your hungry” I watched her face fall. “My treat, I don’t feel like eating alone” For a moment she just stared at me. “I don’t know.. “ “Come on Harper it’s just a bag of chips. I’m not asking you to jump on my bike and ride off into the sunset with me” She laughed and her whole face changed. God she was beautiful, I could feel my d**k twitch in my jeans. “I do love chips” She smiled shyly. “Key to my heart” “Come on then” I started walking, I didn’t reach for her hand. She wasn’t like the usual girls I pursued. No. I could already tell Harper would be a challenge. Way to this girls heart? Chips. Noted
