Chapter 2

4882 Words
Rowena I have been running for who knows how long. I’m feeling dizzy. I haven’t eaten in who knows how long and I’m wounded. I need to rest soon. I’m stumbling over my feet. I can still feel the other two pulls. I know that I probably will for a long time. I know I will have to wait until I am older. Being shy of 15, I shouldn’t be feeling the bond, let alone having a wolf. But considering the circumstances, I know things are different and are going to be harder. I stop and rest at the base of a tree. When I become surrounded by wolves, I can barely make out their figures. In my confusion, the only thing that tells me the largest wolf growls is the air vibrating around me. The wolf stops growling, moving behind a tree instead. When he comes back, he is wearing a pair of shorts with his upper body bare. I also see that he has a set of clothes in his hand that he is offering to me. I can see his mouth moving, but I can’t hear what he is saying. I let him set the clothes in front of me and I try to get up so I can go change. But I’m no longer able to move my limbs. I release a small whimper of fear as I don’t understand what is happening to me. “Shift.” This Alpha commands. Because of the Alpha command, my body is forced to shift, causing me to cry out. After that, I pass out from the pain of the forced shift on my wounded body. Beau When we sensed the border breech, we didn’t really know what to expect. I thought we would have to fight some rogues, at least. But, when we got to where the breech happened, we found a small female wolf with dirty white fur who had a black crescent moon mark on her forehead. When her eyes opened, I saw her eyes were bright blue. I knew instantly that she could fetch a hefty price. She had to be a pure wolf, like my mate. There are some that would pay hundreds of thousands for a pure wolf. When I placed some clothes near her, she didn’t budge to grab the clothes. So, I used my Alpha command on her to make her shift. I guess she was wounded because as I forced her body to shift; she cried out. Seeing how her human side looked, she would definitely fetch a price. “Alpha, there is no way she is sixteen. She’s so small. Why does she have her wolf already?” one of my warriors asked me. “Someone probably abused the poor thing in her old pack. Let’s get her to Shaun so he can start treatment right away,” I reply before picking her up. We headed to the pack hospital with her. Rowena When I come to, I find myself in a sterile, white room. Okay, they brought me to this pack’s hospital. This room is bigger than any of the hospital rooms back in my pack. I won’t be surprised if I find out the entire hospital wing is bigger than ours. I also see new equipment. I wonder how big this pack is. “Ah, you’re awake. Let’s see how your head is doing, shall we?” The voice of a man startles me out of my curiosity. I keep my eyes trained on him as he slowly comes closer to the bed I’m on. My muscles tense as he moves to bring his hand to my face. “While you were out, I had an IV going, hoping it would give your wolf enough strength to at least heal that head wound a bit. You had a pretty terrible cut on the back of your head. Which is why you passed out when you shifted. You have some still healing broken bones as well. I’d like to measure your weight if possible. I need to see how badly malnourishment has affected you, so I can decide on the best treatment plan for you,” the man explains as he unwraps the bandage. I try looking for something I can use to write my question to the man. But I can’t see anything obvious. So, I wait patiently for him to finish examining the cut. I wince as I feel a bit of pricking. It doesn’t hurt as bad as before but it’s still really sore. “It looks like the stitches will have to stay in. I’ll check again in a week,” he says as he begins re-wrapping my head. Once he is in front of me again, I raise my hand and make a writing motion in the air. He frowns at this. “Are you mute?” He asks me. My cheeks grow warm from embarrassment as I let my hand fall back onto my lap. “What on earth happened to you?” He says softly before getting a notepad and pen from a drawer near the bed. “A lot,” I write. Then, below that, I write, “Who are you?” He takes a moment to read what I wrote before sighing softly. “I’m Shaun Blackbourn. I’m the pack doctor of the Crescent Moon pack. My daughter, Rose, is my assistant. Alpha Beau brought you in unconscious and explained what had happened after he used his Alpha Command to help you shift back,” he explains. I think about what he said before writing my next question. “Is there anything you need from me, doctor?” “I think we should start with the basics. Name, age, date of birth, and birth pack,” he replies. “My name is Rowena Reeder. I will turn 15 November 3rd.” I tap the pen tip against the paper a few times, feeling the urge to cry at the thought of the name of my old pack. Shaun kneels down in front of me before pulling the pad out of my hand and holding my hands lightly in his. “Hey, it’s okay. You don’t have to tell me everything right away. Either you can tell me when you are ready or I can deduce it myself when I have enough information to go by. We will do this at your pace. It’ll be a part of your recovery. So let’s skip that one for now. Okay? Just tell me whatever you think I should know and whatever you can handle telling me right now.” His words are so gentle. They make me want to trust him, but I’m afraid to. I nod my head after I’ve calmed down. He smiles before handing the notepad back to me. I think of the things he needs to know. Should I tell him about my mate? Maybe I should wait until I know who I can trust. Before I decide what to tell him, a knock sounds from the door and the door opens, making my body tense. “Shaun, my mate said there was a new pack member here. Oh, hello there.” A beautiful woman walks in and addresses the doctor. She has brown hair with blonde streaks and when she turns to me; I see her eyes are a pretty deep blue shade. They are a really vibrant shade. “Hello, Luna. Yes, this young girl is Rowena. She has some pretty terrible injuries and will take some time to heal. Rowena, this is our pack’s Luna.” At the title “Luna”, my eyes widen and I quickly get off the bed. I try to stand as straight as I can with my head down, eyes to the floor. I hear a sound that I can’t describe come from the Luna and I see her feet take a couple of steps back. I panic when I hear her run out of the room. What if the Alpha of this pack punishes me for make his mate cry? Shaun helps me get back onto the bed and goes back to asking me questions. I think he’s trying to distract me from my panic. “Do you have family somewhere, Rowena?” he asks. I think about what I should write for an answer. “I have an uncle who is the Gamma of my former pack and his wife. I have an older brother, but I don’t know where he is. I heard that the rest of my family were killed or sent to other packs across the States.” “Can you tell me a little about your brother’s situation?” My wolf isn’t picking up any ill intent on the doctor’s question, so I decide to answer to the best I can. Just as I’m about to write my reply, the room’s door opens again. I look over to see a young-ish male. My eyes snap back to my notepad. “Hey, Shaun… My sister sent me over… Said the girl will need a guide and an aid…” The male seems awkward. It’s like he’s struggling to speak. I also notice that Lyall is calm, almost soothed, by this man’s presence. I’m assuming he’s the Luna’s younger brother, but I’m not feeling the usual unease. Something is off. I look up when I sense Shaun move. He walks over to the door and opens it, to find who I’m just going to assume is the Alpha standing on the other side of the door. My body seems to act on instinct. I stand back up, almost losing my balance. I stand a few feet in front of the Alpha with my head tilted to the side, showing my neck while also keeping my eyes trained on my feet. My body is shaking so hard that I find it hard to stay on my feet. I don’t know if it’s from my fear or from my pain. I hear a sigh sound from somewhere in front of me. “Sir, you know your presence intimidates Jesse, and the new member doesn’t seem to handle being near high ranked wolves. This happened a few minutes ago when the Luna came in to meet her. Please, go to your office or go find your mate or something. Let them relax.” The way Shaun just spoke to the Alpha made me close my eyes and my body to tense, bracing for impact. “I apologize, Shaun. I just wanted an update on her condition. I wasn’t aware Jesse was in here,” the Alpha says in a clipped tone. Is it just me, or does the Alpha sound furious? That did not feel like an apology. “With medical help, her wolf was able to heal her head wound a bit, but she will still need to be monitored. She also has some broken bones and some lacerations that required stitches. She will need to be in a calm environment with little stressors in order to heal both physically and most likely mentally. Now, please, Alpha. Let her relax.” Shaun gives him the quick, rundown version of everything. I didn’t hear any details. I need to keep that in mind. There’s also the fact that the boy, Jesse, seems terrified of the Alpha. My wolf is also on edge right now. What’s that about? “Alright, Shaun. I’ll talk with Aria about the girl’s living situation. After she is released into Jesse’s care, I want you to write a full report on her condition and your treatment plan for her recovery.” The Alpha orders before leaving. After the door closes and Lyall feels his presence far enough away, my body just seems to collapse all at once. I feel a tap on my shoulders and look up. I see Jesse holding his arms out in a silent question, to which I nod slowly. He picks me up off the cold floor and brings me back over to the bed. I don’t think I’m going to make being carried a habit. He hands my notepad and pen back to me. “Now, how about we continue where we left off?” Shaun says, coming over to the bed. With that, I write about the situation with my brother on the notepad, knowing he’ll probably have to tell the Alpha. I’m worried, but I need my brother found. After answering most of his questions, going over my treatment plans and everything else, they helped me into a wheelchair and now Jesse is showing me around. The pack house is bigger than the one we had in my old pack. While we had to stay on the main floor, he explained what was on the upper floors. Apparently, he doesn’t live here in the pack house. He has his own little cottage he stays in. Since he gets nervous around the Alpha, who I learned is named Beau, his sister had him live away from the pack house. “Let’s stop by the kitchen for lunch. Do you have a favorite food?” I shake my head at his question. I usually only got scraps if Alpha Micah and Beta Kacey were in a fair mood. So, I’ve all but forgotten what most things actually taste like. “Shaun said you should start with light meals for a while. So, I’ll just make a salad for you.” He pushes my wheelchair over to the island before going about making a salad. “Well, Rowena. Shaun and I have been asking you questions. Do you have questions for me?” His words confuse me. Why would I ask questions? That will just get me punished. His presence may soothe me and my wolf, he is still the Luna’s younger brother. There’s no way I’m allowed to question him. He looks up at me as he slides the bowl of salad in front of me. “It’s okay. You can ask anything. You won’t get punished.” Still weary, I write a few questions I have been wanting to ask. “How old are you?” “Were you and the Luna born here?” “Why does your presence calm my wolf?” He smiles sadly as he reads my questions. “I’m nineteen. We came here from a different pack that neither of us are okay with mentioning, and your wolf is calm by my presence, probably because I’m an Omega.” I tilt my head in confusion. Omegas are only weak, useless wolves. There’s nothing special about us. What does he mean? He sighs before answering my silent question. “I’m guessing you weren’t taught the truth about Omega. From my understanding, Omega was never supposed to be the rank given to the weakest pack members. We are supposed to be the caregivers. Omega isn’t a rank you are given, its something you are born as. We are given smaller bodies from the other pack members because we aren’t supposed to be on the battlefield. I’ve heard many packs actually protect the Omega’s within their packs because they help make lives better. One thing about being an Omega is that your presence soothes agitated wolves.” His explaination leaves me more confused. But, the lesson gets interrupted by his phone going off, as I finish eating what I can of my salad. “Hello, Jesse here… Oh, hi, Jessica!… yeah, that’s right. I’m with her right now… you’re probably right. Alright, meet us at my house, we’ll get started right away while the uppers are having their discussion.” With that, he puts his phone back in his pocket. “Are you ready to head out? We’re meeting up with a friend of mine to see about ordering some clothes for you.” I nod at him as I put my notepad and pen in my lap. It’s a bit of a trek to his house, which makes me glad I don’t have to walk it. When we get there, I see a girl bigger than me sitting on the front porch. She has short black hair and as we get closer to her; I see she has bright green eyes. “Rowena, this is Jessica. She takes a sewing class at school. I’m going to have her take your measurements so we can order you some clothes.” I hesitantly nod at him. He wheels me inside and she follows behind us. I look around the living room and get a little disheartened when I realize he won’t be able to get the wheelchair through. I let him pick me up while Jessica folds the wheelchair. Jesse carries me through the house until we reach his office. He sets me on my feet in the middle of the room and helps me stay upright. Jessica makes quick work at taking my measurements. At certain points, Jesse has to close his eyes. Once she is finished, she goes over and flops down in his huge chair while I’m placed on his desk. “We’ll just start small for now. How long has it been since you went shopping?” She asks. I shrug, I can’t think of any time in my life where I was allowed to. “Once your body is healed and you are a bit more comfortable, maybe we can drag your shadow out of the house and do some real shopping in the town nearby.” “Shadow...?” Jesse’s voice is quiet, as though talking to himself, I giggle a little before my body stiffens. When was the last time I laughed? “By the way, Jessica, after mind linking Aria, I have permission to move Rowena in. So, I want to get her furniture that would suit her. I just don’t know what to get.” Jessica pauses at hearing his words. She turns to look at me. “Rowena, do you have any interests or favorite colors?” She asks me. I have to think on that one. I look around the room while I think of anything that would be an answer. The only thing I can do at the moment is point at Jesse’s dark shirt, which appears to confuse the hell out of him. “I think she’s trying to say she’d like dark colors. Do you have any light sensitivity?” Not sure what her question has to do with anything, but I nod. “Okay, so we’ll do dark bedding, blackout curtains and pieces of furniture made of dark wood. We can get some things that fit with any interests or hobbies she may have.” At that, I write some things down on the notepad. “Garden” “Art” “Learn more about our world” They read what I wrote, and Jessica types on Jesse’s computer. “We can contact a few people to see if they can help with those. Maybe we can even talk to someone about getting some tutors for her. I’d imagine she’ll want to go to school at some point.” I listen as Jessica speaks. I see Jesse pulls his phone out the corner of my eye. As they work on making orders for my things, I sit on the desk in total boredom. Kicking my legs back and forth while zoning out, I accidentally end up kicking Jesse. After being kicked, he moves me to the living room and lets me watch TV. I quickly learn that watching TV is one of the most boring things ever. So, ignoring the TV, I flip my notepad to a clean page and begin mindlessly drawing. I quickly lose track of time as I let my mind wander. “That’s a beautiful wolf you’re drawing. Was it your mother’s? Why does the wolf look so heartbroken?” the sound of Jesse’s voice near me startles me. I look down at the picture I’ve been working on. I recognize the eyes, the expression. I slam the book closed and fling it across the room. I want to cry and scream. I want to run. I don’t know if I’m hurting so much because of how a mate bond works, or if it’s amplified because of my circumstances. Because they forced my wolf out so early, I’ve experienced many things early and harder than most. It’s all unexplainable, things that I had no control over. Puberty hit me less than a year after Lyall was forced to come out along with my first period. My first period brought mind-numbing pain and a lot of blood with it. I ended up hospitalized because of it. My senses heightened to such a severe degree that I couldn’t handle anything for the first year. My sight and hearing are the best in my now former pack. I can see the smallest dust particles in the air and hear a mated pair doing the nasty from miles away. I don’t even know how fast my wolf is, I just know that the only wolf who could catch me was Uncle Sam. It took a lot of work for him to help me control my speed. From what he’s told me, my speed control was much harder than any of his siblings. I feel my emotions on a larger scale and sometimes it’s impossible for me to handle them on my own. So, there’s no telling if this pain caused by the mate bond is normal or amplified. I do my best to not cry. My hurting heart doesn’t make it any easier. I know where it wants me to go, but I know I can’t yet. So, crying is pointless. It will do nothing for my situation except give me a headache and exhaust me. Fighting back my emotions and my desires, I look at Jesse, who has a shocked expression on his face. “Well, I don’t know what that was about, and I don’t know how to help you. So, I’m just going to move your attention to something else. The Alpha wants to do your entrance ceremony today so we can get it over with. There will be a lot of people there. Do you need anything before we head over?” I nod at his question before writing. “I need to go to the bathroom. Is there a brush or a comb I can use on my hair?” Without saying a word, he carries me to the bathroom and sets me on my feet in front of the mirror. “I’ll be out in the hall. Knock on the wall when you’re ready,” he tells me before stepping out. Jessica comes in with her bag. “Here is a change of clothes. I can help if you need. I have a few more sets of clothes for you I just finished putting away. I figured you’d need something while we wait for the orders to arrive.” I wait silently as she shows me everything as she sets the clothes on the toilet lid. I’m not sure how I’ll dress myself, but I’ll figure it out. Finally alone, I look in the mirror, getting my first glance of myself in who knows how long. My long red hair is matted and dirty, with twigs and other things from the woods. I wish I could clean my hair. My blue eyes look rather dull. There is no light to be seen. Which makes sense, seeing as I was nearing the end of my wit when I got chased out. As for my face, I can’t tell if I’m seeing freckles or dirt. I’m a mess. First, I start with cleaning my face as best I can. I find some face wash in a cabinet and use that to clean my face. I have to scrub at some spots but otherwise; it is a fairly easy task. It is mostly dried blood with some mud mixed in. Once my face is clean, it’s time to tackle my hair. I decide to start at the ends, knowing that is easier. The ends of my hair isn’t too badly tangled, the length just makes it a little difficult. From there, I slowly work towards the body of my hair. But almost immediately, I hit a snag in the plan. First pass through of the body, the comb stops moving. The comb is now stuck in my hair. I try tugging at it, but stop when I feel the stitches in my head pulling. I release a grunt of irritation before hitting my hand on the wall a few times. When the two Jesse’s step through the door, they both laugh, making me narrow my eyes at them. “Let your sister know it may be a bit. We have a bit of a problem to solve here,” Jessica says to Jesse as she guides me out of the bathroom. Before we get far, Jesse picks me up and follows Jessica who grabs a chair on her way outside. I’m sat in the chair on the porch as Jessica grabs some stuff from her bag. Why couldn’t we have started with that? She starts with spraying some kind of product onto my hair, practically drenching my hair in the stuff. The smell of the product is so strong for my nose that I have to cover my nose and mouth with my hands. I see her pull out a brand new brush from her oversized bag and undo it from its packaging. Then she disappears behind me. She slowly makes progress in taking apart my hair. Jesse is holding a bag up as she puts leafs, twigs, and dead hair into the bag. When she gets my hair completely tangle free, she sprays another product in my hair, again drenching it before towel drying my hair and brushing my hair out one final time and braiding it back. Then, they bring me back to my room. I sit on my bed so I can change my clothes without standing on my leg. Once I’m done getting dressed, I hobble my way to the door and open it to see them waiting on the other side. I see a smile on their faces as Jesse picks me up. I’m brought back outside and sat in my wheelchair. Jesse pushes my wheelchair back towards the packhouse. Time to deal with one of the most terrifying things ever. Beau An entrance ceremony. I don’t know why I let my mate and Shaun convince me to bring the girl into our pack when I plan to sell her to the best buyer as soon as she’s healed and educated. When Shaun told me about her brother, I started planning a rescue mission because my guess was he’ll fetch a good price as well. If it’s in their family genes, he’ll probably have some good features. Or we can easily make him into a fighter. So many potential buyers are looking for many things in slaves. Brown hair and green eyes are boringly common, but pure wolves fetch great money. Both of them could help with paying off my debts. Selling them as a pair would be even better. Someone could get two pure wolves as slaves. They’ll fetch me more money that way. Now, if I could just get Aria trained right, I could sell all three at the same time. Jesse is going to be a problem, though. He’s too innocent and afraid. Instead of doing as he’s told, he runs away. Training him to fight is taking a lot of work as well. Someone definitely babied him too much as a child. It’s ruined any sort of potential he could have had. It doesn’t help that he’s an Omega, so all he’s good for is keeping women and children calm and quiet. Damian We just arrived at our territory. I change back into my human form and get dressed before heading to my office, with Jade and the woman following me. “To start, I’m going to go through all the transfer records to find out if you still have any relatives in the pack. So, can I get your name and date of birth, as well as family occupation?” I ask, thinking it’ll be a simple search as I boot up my computer. “I’m sorry, Alpha. You probably won’t find my file in the transfer records. My name is Shannon Holton, maiden name Becerra. I was born on June 10th, 1975. My family would have been this pack’s previous Alpha family, and I left the pack around 8 years ago, if memory is correct.” Her words give me pause. Don’t tell me she’s… Excusing myself for a moment, I got into the late father’s forbidden office and start going through his filing cabinet, looking for my last name. Found it… “Slave #57: Purchase Agreement; Shannon Holton.” I can’t help but want to shout in excitement. I’m also glad that James is “on vacation” as usual. I head back to my office with the file in hand and a big smile on my face.
