Chapter 1

3842 Words
Rowena I am violently torn from my memories when my body collides with the brick wall of my bedroom. As I slump against the floor in pain, my eyes slowly open to see my red-faced Alpha standing over me. I shake in terror as I bite my tongue to hold in my screams. I can taste the metallic copper of my blood as my teeth cut through my tongue. “You filthy Omega, why aren’t you downstairs fixing breakfast for my army?” My Alpha growls out as his hand wraps around my neck painfully. My wolf whimpers and cowers in the back of my mind. I try to gasp desperately for air as my feet dangle a few feet from the floor. When he drops me in a heap on the floor, I can’t stop the convulsing coughs from escaping my now sore throat. Before I can fully recover from his choking force, he grabs my bony arm in a bruising grip and drags me from my bedroom. He stops at the top of the stairs and kicks me down the stairs. I can’t stop the scream that comes out as I hit each step on the way down. I can’t tell which way is up as my body cartwheels without stopping. When I come to a stop on the first landing, I shakily begin attempting to pull myself to my feet. I guess I’m not moving fast enough because before I make it to my knees; I feel a foot slam into my stomach, sending me down another set of stairs. This time when I land, my head hits the edge of the last step. Stars dance across my vision. I don’t have time to get up. My body is failing to listen to my mind’s commands to get up. I feel something wrap itself in my hair and pull me down the last flight of stairs. I try grabbing the hand that has ahold of my hair as my legs and ass repeatedly slam into the next step painfully. Finally, I am pulled forward and thrown to the floor as the hand releases my hair, a few strands ripping from my scalp. Then, I am left there bruised, bleeding, and unable to move. Several minutes later, I’m able to move my hurting body. I make my way to the industrial refrigerators to grab everything I need to make breakfast for everyone. It takes awhile to finish as I haven’t eaten in the last three days, and after my punishment, I am weak and slow, more so than usual. Unfortunately, I can’t go back to my “room” afterward. I have to stick around to serve the pack. Once everyone is seated in the oversized dining room, I wheel in the cart trays of food. As I am placing the food on the table, the Luna leans towards me. She bumps my arm that is holding the spaghetti, causing it to spill onto her pretty white dress. She lets out a screech that makes my ears feel like they are going to bleed. I jerk back in shock as the sound seems to bounce around in my head. “You b***h! Look at what you just did to my dress! It is one of a kind! You’ve ruined it!” The Luna screeching in my ear causes me to wince. My cheek stings as I find myself on the floor. “You stupid w***e! Watch what you’re doing!” Another she-wolf shouts in my face. I feel myself get pushed forward. I feel someone grab my hair once again before I’m dragged away painfully. My body connects with each step once more as the person drags me up all three flights of stairs. I’m thrown back into my tiny attic room. I hear my door close and lock, leaving me alone and with no way of escape. I lay on the dusty old floor, waiting to see if someone is coming up to punish me. When I don’t hear footsteps, I pull myself onto my arms and drag myself onto my stained mattress. I feel the stinging in my eyes and push the tears away. I haven’t cried in so many years. I’m not about to start now. I am ready to give up on my sad, insignificant life. I do not know why the goddess allowed me to be born into this world. She made a mistake with me. I am tired of hurting and feeling afraid. I just want to be with my family again. “I am nothing more than the worthless Omega orphan of Crimson Hollows.” That is my last thought as I fall into a restless sleep. When my eyes open, I’m not in my room. I’m in a meadow filled with many flowers, the moon beaming down on me with its cold brilliance. “Hello, child.” I hear a gentle voice in my head. I turn to who I know is behind me. A silver wolf, the color of the moon. She has the darkest set of eyes I have ever seen, the color of a moonless sky. “Lupa, why am I alive?” I can’t help the question. It is something I’ve always wondered. “Child, you’ll have to find your own purpose in life. I made the choice to keep you alive because you are special. You are meant for something. But you have to find out what it is you are meant to do.” Her words sound in my mind as I feel her tail wrap around my waist. “Hold out a little longer. There will be an opportunity for you to escape. Your life won’t always be this nightmare. It wasn’t what I had planned for you. Everything up till this point happened because one wolf retaliated against his fate.” I cuddle against her side as I hear her words in my head. “I don’t know how much more I can handle. I’ve been dealing with this for almost nine years. There’s only so much a person can take before it becomes too much.” My warm, salty tears flow steadily down my face as I open up to her. “I know, child. Just wait a little longer.” She says before the meadow falls away and I wake in my bed. After that, I close my eyes and fall into a dreamless sleep. When I wake the next morning, I climb out of bed and walk over to my wash bucket. I clean my face free of any remaining tears that may have fallen in my sleep before cleaning blood off my body. While I am glad my wolf could heal most of my injuries as I slept, I hate I can still feel a few broken bones in my body, as well as the visible bruises in some areas. When I finish cleaning myself up, I choose my outfit for the day. I find a purple long-sleeved shirt and a pair of skinny jeans with holes in a few places. The shirt is a little tattered, but it still covers most of my bruised skin. I tug on my ratty tennis shoes, knowing glass will most likely break in the day. Once I am at least presentable, I limp down the stairs to the kitchen. I check the stock in the fridge and find what I need to start breakfast. I already had the eggs and sausages on the stove cooking when I smell a delicious scent. It’s the scent of chocolate and mint. Soon, I hear the voices of my Alpha and a stranger. “What is that amazing smell? It’s coming from the kitchen. Who is back there, Alpha Micah?” The stranger’s voice is beautiful and wraps me in velvet. It is deep and rich. “No one special, James. Just the pack’s young Omega,” My Alpha says, making me frown at his words. My body shivers at the name. I hear nothing after that. I quickly set the massive table, making sure all the plates have food on them. Before wolves file through the double doors, I rush to my room, hoping to avoid any punishment. I make it to my room and hide there until lunchtime. I go back downstairs around noon to make lunch. I notice the smell from this morning is gone, telling me that whoever it belonged to has left as well. Halfway through lunch, I learn I won’t be as lucky as I was this morning. The Beta comes into the kitchen while I am cleaning the dishes from breakfast. Before I can set the glass in the sink, I am on the floor, glass now surrounding my shaking figure. “The Alpha informed me that the visiting Alpha caught your filthy scent this morning.” He kicks my already broken ribs, causing me to bite my tongue to keep from screaming. “From now on, when we have a visitor, you are to mask your scent. We wouldn’t want other packs to find out about you, now would we?” He punches me in the stomach, effectively knocking my breath from my lungs. I am left alone to pick myself up after that. After getting my breath back, I clean the broken glass and continue washing the dishes. After finishing the dishes, I pull myself up the stairs to my room. I don’t make it sadly. “Where do you think you’re going, filth? Since you skipped out on your chores yesterday, you have double the amount today.” I don’t have time to react to the voice before my face meets the wall when the Alpha appears behind me. He walks away after my lip tore open. Blood is now dripping down my chin. I go to the supply closet and pull out what I need to clean the rooms. I go from room to room, picking up clothes and trash from the floors. Sometimes my hand lands on something that makes me gag. I am exhausted by the time I have all the rooms clean. I put away the supplies and rush to my room. Finally, I make it to my room without incident. Now, I get to spend the rest of the day in sweet solitude. After cleaning the sweat and blood from my body, I grab my notebook and sit on my bed. I lose myself in my drawing until a soft knock sounds at my door. When the door opens, I see Aunt Charla stepping into my room. “Hi, sweetheart. Your uncle and I want to know if you want to go out with us.” Her words confuse me for a moment before I understand she means out to dinner. I smile at her and nod. I slip my shoes back on and leave with her. She wraps her arm around my shoulders, making sure no one bothers me as we pass by people. My smile widens when I see Uncle Sam in the car. “Hey, short stack,” He greets me with a smile as I hug him through the window. I climb into the backseat and buckle my seat belt, tapping his shoulder when I am ready. We head to a family dinner two towns over. They have often talked about dropping me off somewhere far away from the pack, but I always shake my head at them. They would get in trouble with the Alpha if they did that. They tell me about their day, and how work is going. They tell me they might have found an Alpha who might take me in. He doesn’t believe in Omegas and often takes in wolves who are abused by their packs. They talk to me about taking a week off from work for a road trip with me and drop me off at the border of his territory that is about a couple day’s drive away. As always, I shake my head at the idea. I doubt they’ll be safe from the Alpha. He knows they are the only ones who care. “Well, maybe all three of us can go to this pack. It would be better there than Crimson Hollows, you’d be treated better.” I shake my head at the suggestion. I don’t want to be the reason they leave their home, the only place they’ve ever known. They are the only members of our family left in this pack. The idea of them leaving it doesn’t feel right to me. After dinner, they take me to a secluded area around the edge of the territory for me to shift into my wolf and run around for a little while. Uncle Sam shifts with me so he can stay close and keep me from accidentally stumbling past the territory. My wolf, Lyall, enjoys getting some time out and being able to spend it with her wolf uncle. Sadly, we can’t be out for too much longer. So, we shift back and get dressed. He carries my now sleepy body to the car and we make our way back to the pack house. When we get back, Aunt Charla escorts me to my room. That night, just like every night, Serenity’s wolf comes to me in my dreams. “Child, we have little time. I need you to listen carefully. Tomorrow, Micah will come to your room. He will try to force himself upon you. You’ll have to do something to distract him. It won’t work for long, so you’ll need to be quick. Run to the western border. You may have to fight wolves, so give Lyall control. Have faith in your wolf, child. She is up to the challenge. Run hard and fast for as long as you can. You will find what you need. Now, you need to rest. We will meet again once you’re safe,” she says in my mind. The dream disappears as I wake in my bed. To say I am scared is an understatement. But I trust Serenity. I know everything will work out. After that, I fall back into a now restless sleep. When I wake again, my limbs feel heavy. I can’t lift my arms or move my legs. As my eyes open, I see green eyes above my own. Alpha Micah is hovering over me with his body pinning me to my mattress. My heart races as I realize his hands are at the hem of my nightshirt. I buck wildly to throw him off. He throws a punch to my face. I grunt as I feel my nose break and the warmth of my blood flow over my face. I try twisting my body to slip out from under him. My forehead smashed against brick when I crash against the wall. My arms are pinned against my back as I feel the brick dig into my cheek. I feel tears stinging the back of my eyes when my shirt rips. I fight harder when my shirt disappears from my body. I kick my leg as far back as it will go, throwing as much force into it as I can while still being pinned. My arms are freed when he drops to his knees as my foot slams into his crotch. I run out of the room. I don’t even make it out of the pack house when I’m grabbed and spun around. My Alpha wraps his hands around my throat and begins squeezing. I try scratching at his hands, trying to dig my nails in to get him to release my neck. I also try kicking out at his body. When that doesn’t work, I reach my hands up to his face. I press my thumbs roughly into his eyes. He cries out as I push harder, but he still doesn’t let go of me. He releases my neck when I make my body go limp. As he bends to pick me up, I push my wolf forward. She transforms into our wolf form and uses the front of his body to flip backward. I am insanely glad I had agreed to train a little in wolf form with Uncle Sam. When we land, there is enough distance for us to turn around and take off. Before long, we hear several paws giving chase. Unfortunate for them, we are the second fastest wolf in the pack. We duck and weave through the woods. I am glad that Uncle Sam had thought it necessary for me to learn the territory when I was younger. Lyall ducks low just as a wolf moves to tackle us. Instead, he sails through empty air, slamming harshly against a large oak tree. She huffs at the stupid wolf but doesn’t stop running. She continues pumping her legs, trying to push our wolf body to go faster. My wolf yips when we roll on the forest floor. I take back control at her reaction. She tries pushing for control, but I refuse to release the reins. I don’t understand why she is now hell-bent on staying but I’m not willing to stop and find out. So, I push my body to roll onto my feet and continue running. She growls at me in my head but doesn’t say a thing. When it happens again, I have to pause the rolling. My head hit a rock when I was tackled, which has caused my world to be blurry. As I wait for my vision to clear, I see the most beautiful wolf I have seen. He has black fur with a white lightning bolt on his chest and his forehead. He has beautiful golden brown eyes. Lyall sighs softly in my head and tries to urge me to stay where I am. That is, until He appears. When we see Alpha Micah’s wolf over the black one’s shoulder coming closer, she pushes me aside. Our vision clears as she takes control and she slips out from under this wolf’s body. She runs the last fifty yards as hard as she can. She skids to a halt as we cross the territory line. She gives me back control, receding to the back of my mind. “Lyall?” I call in confusion. All I get back is a small whimper. I don’t have time to ponder her behavior before I hear His voice in my mind. “You have abandoned your pack, Omega. You have committed one of the gravest offenses in our world. By my right as Alpha, if I ever see you again, I will carry out your sentence by ending your worthless life. Good luck ever finding a pack who will take in a rogue.” A small whimper escapes my mouth as I feel my pack link sever, telling me I am no longer a member of the Crimson Hollow pack. Which, I’m fine with. I know Serenity will look out for me. She has a plan. I just have to trust her. I pause when I see those beautiful eyes again. They look so sad and hurt. It breaks my heart. I whine softly at the wolf that has stopped at the edge of the territory line. I show him my neck, showing that I accept him as my mate. After that, I turn and run off. I am now in rogue territory. I can’t afford to stand in one place for very long. I have to keep moving. So, that is just what I do. I run. I run from the only home I’ve ever known my whole life. I run from the one wolf who was made solely for me. I run for my life, leaving a piece of my heart and soul behind with him. The fur around my eyes quickly become wet as tears fell. I don’t notice the whines and whimpers that escape my throat. My ears don’t hear the heartbreaking howl my wolf releases into the night. All I hear is the sorrowful howl that sounds in the distance. My soul shattering over and over at the sound. It is as though someone has taken a piece of my shattered soul and is stabbing it into my bleeding heart. I resist the urge to turn back and run to him. Instead, I continue moving my feet forward. My body feeling three separate pulls. One is leading back to the wolf I left behind. One is guiding me to the east. One heads west. I know that the next time I speak to Serenity’s wolf, she’ll have some questions to answer. Damien “Alpha, the Crimson Hollow’s Beta just called. It seems they are having some lone rogue terrorizing their pack. He said his Alpha had him call for backup in case the rogue has others with her,” my Beta informs me. “Alright, go round up a few men. We’ll only take about fifty wolves with us. Be ready in five,” I dismiss him after that. “Their Alpha can’t handle one little rogue she-wolf? Pfft, he’s weaker than I originally thought,” my wolf jokes humorously. “Either that, or she’s just that good,” I reply while debating whether or not I should call James. In the end, I decide not to. I don’t want to deal with him. My men and I go to the Crimson Hollows pack in our wolf forms. When we reach their lands, they are already in a chase. I see white fur streak passed me and run after it. It is the only one different from the rest. I catch up to her rather quickly. She is smaller than I expected. I have a strong urge to protect her. So, I bunch my muscles and leap into the air. I tackle the small she-wolf, causing her to tumble and roll. I try tucking her beneath me, but she is a fast little thing. I begin chasing her again. I am able to catch her a few minutes later, but this time I make a mistake. When I tackle her this time, I don’t see the large rock until I hear her head smack against it. She pauses long enough for me to take in her appearance. She has brilliant silver fur. When my eyes trail up to her face, I get lost in her blue eyes. I hear leaves crunching behind me. When the movement behind me catches her attention, her eyes change color before she stands and runs. I begin chasing her once again. I see the territory line getting closer. I push my wolf to go faster, but she crosses it before we catch her. I can’t believe she is running from me. She skids to a stop and turns to look at me. Her eyes are once again blue, but this time they look sad. She bares her neck to me, but then she turns around and runs. My wolf releases a deep howl into the forest.
