Out Of The Frying Pan!

* Claire’s POV * I sit alone in the room and stare at the clock, the seconds ticking away so slowly that it seems to take an hour before a single minute passes. The silence is everywhere, surrounding me like an unwelcome gust of wind which chooses to linger. I feel numb, and I almost want to scream at the absurdity of all this. I can still feel his evil presence around the house, soaking into the walls and making it impossible for me to breathe without catching his horrible scent. Sarah lies in my hands and sleeps peacefully, her warmth seeping into my exposed arms. When she coughed slightly, my chest tightened as I stared down at her, a fierce protectiveness coming over me. Last night encounter had left me shaken, and I couldn’t bring myself to think about what could have happened if I wasn’t here. “Good morning,” William says as he steps into the room. He smiles at me, that goofy grin he always has early in the morning. It still feels unreal to see him in the morning and remember that he’s my husband. I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to it, and perhaps he knows this with the way he looks at me. “Good morning,” I reply, and he walks over to kiss me. His lips linger for just a little bit, and I lean closer towards him as he smirks against my lips. “Keep that up, and I might not have to go into work today,” he says. “That’s exactly what I want,” I say. “Let’s take the day off and stay here.” “I wish I could,” he says. “But I need to go to work. I need to have a board meeting and explain to all our shareholders that nothing has changed. Everyone is getting cold feet since they learned of recent events.” I understood, but I still didn’t want him to leave. Last night had left me rattled, and I still couldn’t believe what happened. If I wasn’t so sure, I would have thought that it was nothing more than a dream, or rather a nightmare. But I had already used my magic to repair the broken glass, and that was how I knew it was real. William frowns, and he straightens up as he begins to sniff the air. His eyes begin to glow, and it’s clear that he has caught the scent as well. He steps away from me, and he begins to look around the room in confusion. “Do you smell that?” he asks. “A vampire,” I reply. “He came last night before you came back from the office.” William turns to look at me in shock and confusion, and his eyes immediately fly towards Sarah. “It’s alright,” I say. “I took care of it.” “How the hell did a vampire find his way into our home?” he asks. I can see the look of pure rage on his face, and the fact that he looks like he wants to murder someone. It’s exactly how I felt last night when I woke up to a sudden blast of thunder. I wasn’t sure why, but I definitely felt like something was wrong. I immediately summoned the sword to my hands, and I made my way to the living room where I found the horrible creature stepping into our home. “He was after something,” I say. “Although I’m not entirely sure what it was. He blinded me for a second with some kind of magic, and I don’t know whether he found the thing he was looking for or not. But he was talking about Sarah, and he said we would meet again.” William immediately sits beside me, the smile which was on his face earlier now completely replaced with a look of pure terror. He asks me to tell him everything that happened last night, and as soon as I’m done, he flies out of his seat with a look of intent, the gears in his head already turning as he began to formulate a plan. “Those bastards have grown bolder than I thought,” he says. “If they think they can attack my home and threaten my family, then they are clearly mistaken. I will kill them all of I have to.” Sarah stirs in my arms, and I immediately begin to rock her back to sleep. William stares at her for a while, clearly thinking about what could have happened to her if I wasn’t here too protect her. The fact that the vampire even mentioned her was a sign that they were probably after her, and I couldn’t exactly figure out why they would do that. William had already told me that they were planning something, most likely an attack which would come from the south. But I didn’t think that it would happen so quickly, and I certainly didn’t think that it would mean they were coming for Sarah. “We can’t stay here anymore,” William says, looking at me. “We need to find somewhere else to live.” “What do you mean?” “I mean It’s not safe here anymore,” he says, his eyes narrowing. “If they can’t find their way into our home, then we’re not safe here. We need to go somewhere else, and fast.” “Where would you suggest?” I ask. “The pack house hasn’t been rebuilt yet,” he says. “It’s taking longer than expected. But I can find some other place for us to sleep tonight, and I’ll start making arrangements on how to find a better place.” “It’s not going to make much of a difference,” I say. “Manhattan only has so many places we can go to, and I would argue that this is the safest place for us to be. We just need to put some extra security measures so we can be sure that nothing is going to happen.” “What are you suggesting?” he asks. “Magic,” I explain. “If we can get some protective spells around the house, and make sure that security in and around the block is tight, then we should be fine.” “But how are we going to do that?” he asks. “It’s not like you still have your magic, is it?” I hold my breath, and I look away so he won’t see the guilty expression on my face. I still haven’t told him about what I did, and all he knew was that I had given back my magic so we would be able to have more kids. I didn’t let him know that even though I had given back my magic, it wasn’t entirely gone because of the sword. I should have told him the truth, but I felt like he didn’t need to know that. Besides, I am trying to put that part of my life in the past. It has been over three months since I faced Zion, and a lot has changed since then. I do not want to be dragged back into that horror I just managed to escape. “You know what?” he says, “I’m calling Jakob right now so he can watch over you. When I get back, we’re going to discuss this some more.” He kisses my forehead and does the same for Sarah before he walks out. I feel like going after him and telling him to come back, but I stand up instead and make my way to Sarah’s room. I place her in her crib so she can continue sleeping, and when William leaves, I make my way to the bathroom and run a hot bath. The hot water scalds my skin when I step in, but I suck in a breath and sit in the tub. The heat burns off some of the memories of last night, and I lay my head back and stare up at the ceiling. This wasn’t how things were supposed to be. After defeating Zion, I thought that my life was going to be a lot easier than before. Everything was meant to be perfect, and I was supposed to live my happily ever after with William and Sarah. But all the warnings I had heard from the past came rushing back, and with the threat of vampires hanging over our heads like an executioner’s blade, I didn’t know how we were going to make this work. It felt like we had leapt out of a frying pan and straight into the fire. And before this was over, we would all get burned in the process. Several minutes later, I fell asleep in the tub. I have a dream that I was dangling off a cliff, and that a tall, dark figure was hovering over me with his eyes glowing. At first I thought it was Zion, but then I saw his face and I knew this was someone much more evil. His fangs stood out prominently, and he cackled at me before he stomped on my fingers and forced me off the cliff. I wake up with a start, and my heart is racing so much that I almost can’t breath. The water has turned cold, and Sarah is crying just outside the bathroom. I quickly stepped out of the water and wrap a towel around my soaking body before I rush over to see what is wrong with her. She must have woken up from her nap a while ago. I pick her up and begin to rock her slowly, trying to calm her down. It takes a while before she becomes quiet again, and relief floods through my chest as I sit on the bed. That’s when I notice the paper lying beside me on the bed, with a single message written on it: We Need To Talk! *
