Prologue!

*** It was a dark and stormy night, with forks of lightning illuminating the night sky as a thunderous storm rolls over the earth. Bathed in a steady sheet of grey, both sky and earth are moulded into one, united in the turmoil that is the first rainstorm of the year.  If anyone had dared to look up, they would have spotted a lone figure atop a skyscraper peering down, unperturbed by the rain. He was a tall and fairly muscular man, with eyes which glowed like the deepest pits of hell. His name was Lucius, commander of the League of vampires.  His fangs glistened as another fork of lightning illuminated the sky overhead, and he slowly began to crawl down the side of the building like a giant spider. His claws gripped the glass tightly, and he made his way down several floors before he reached the floor he wanted. Here, he carved a circle in the glass with a single claw, then he hopped into the darkness and warmth of the house.  Already, he could feel the magic in the apartment, and he could smell her in the air. It was a sweet, subtle fragrance, and it caught his attention and held him captive so that for a while, he couldn't even move. He stood there in the middle of the room, took a deep breath and smiled to himself.  Unfortunately, as soon as he took a single step forward, he was suddenly slammed against the wall and a sharp blade pressed directly against his throat.  "Take a single move and I'll drive this through your heart," she whispered in a cold voice. Lucius smirked, and a low growl escaped from the back of his throat. He glanced down at her, surprised by how he didn't even see her coming. She was so fast, and standing in her presence actually made him feel more alive than he had felt in a thousand years. Her scent drove him insane, and he couldn't even think straight as he stared into her eyes, illuminated by another fork of lightning.  "Who the hell are you?" she asked.  "A humble fan," he replied. "I have wanted nothing more than to meet you ever since I heard about you. And now, it's even better than I imagined." Claire tilted her head to the side and glared at him, driving the sword a little bit more into his chest. He squirmed in discomfort, but he kept on smiling at her.  "Where's William?" he asked. "And the little girl. Sarah, was it? I'm dying to meet her." "You leave my daughter's name out of this," she snapped.  "Oh, but she's not your daughter, is she?" he asked. "You think because you hold her every night and she sleeps next to you that makes you her mother? It doesn't. And you should have realised this a long time ago." "Tell me what the f**k you're here for," she snapped.  Lucius chuckled, and the sound was so loud and evil that it nearly made her heart stop. He was absolutely terrifying, but she wasn't going to back down from this.  "I'm here for you, my sweet navia," he said. "And when I want something, I fully intend to get it." He snapped his fingers suddenly, and a blinding light exploded in the room. Claire drove her sword forward, but it only stabbed into the wall. She closed her eyes as pain exploded at the back of her skull. She swung around, desperately trying to find out where he was. But all she could hear was his cackling laughter and the explosion of thunder from far away.  "We shall meet again, my sweet navia," he chuckled as he moved towards the window. "Until then, keep it safe for me." And with that, he leapt out of the window and out into the storm.  And Claire knew, deep down in her heart, that this would not be the last time she faced him.  ***
