Chapter 2: Rejected By Her Mate

1665 Words
Charlotte immediately got up and followed the sweet scent. She was hyperventilating and her palms were all sweaty as she felt the source of the sweet scent get closer. It led her to the middle of the spot where she knew the daughters of alphas and betas mainly gathered. She would never step foot into this area if it were any other day, but she couldn't care less at the moment. "Please telling me you didn't do that, Ralph! That’s just hilarious!" "Come on, man. I was the victim in this and deserve to be sympathized with. Why are you all laughing at my misfortune?" Charlotte stopped in front of an impeccably suited boy who didn't look more than a year older than her. For men, the color of the day was a white tuxedo. So it was no surprise that Ralph Handler, son to Alpha Robin Handler of Westfield Pack, was putting on a white tuxedo. He looked handsome as usual with his brown hair moved backward and incredibly tanned skin. Charlotte, who often admired him from a distance and currently found it hard to believe the moon goddess really made him his mate, had her mouth slightly open in disbelief. "Hey, you're right on time. Get me another glass." Ralph Handle said, mistaking her for one of the servers. However, in her state of being mesmerized, a little drool slid down her mouth and onto his hand when he extended her his glass to refill. "What the hell? Are you tired of living?!" He growled in disgust and instantly wiped off her drool with his handkerchief. However, he soon froze in shock and slowly turned to look at her. Charlotte saw the surprised look in his eyes and immediately knew he could feel the mating pull between them. However, her smile fell when she saw him look away nonchalantly, with no intention of saying anything or acknowledging her presence. She was about to say something when one of his friends walked forward and chuckled mockingly. "Look like you left a girl speechless again, Ralph. Goodness, when will they ever get used to how good you look?" "Stop messing around, Dean." Ralph frowned deeply. "Hey, she does look familiar. Isn't she the servant the Turner sisters usually come with?" Dean suddenly asked, sizing up her face with his thumb and index finger. Ralph's frown deepened the more. The Turner sisters? Does that mean the Turner sisters might've sent her to call him and he just overreacted because of a small pulse? "Did Paige send you to me? Where is she? I'll go to her." He asked without looking at her and went ahead to searche the room with his eyes. Charlotte didn't think much about his question and just concluded he must've understood because of what people thought of her. "Paige didn't send me. I came here on my own." She smiled. The irritation in Ralph's eyes was obvious as soon as he heard her. There was also a slight panic in them. He was the distinguished son of Alpha Robin and the apparent Alpha to the Westfield Pack. It was expected of him to be mated to someone of equal importance. The daughter of an Alpha, the daughter of a Beta, the daughter of a Delta. Not a freaking servant! "You're my mate. I'm your mate!" Charlotte suddenly said before he could walk away. Because her voice was a little too loud and they were in the middle of the room which was packed with people, a lot of them heard her words and immediately shifted their attention to her. "What did you say?!" Dean blurted out in shock. Charlotte briefly looked at him. She didn't know who he was, but she did know he went everywhere with Ralph. Before Charlotte could repeat what she said, Ralph's loud and angry voice interrupted her. "You do know I can get you beheaded for saying that, don't you?" Charlotte froze. Beheaded? Ralph's angry eyes pierced hers and for a moment, she was lost. Finding one's mate was a thing of joy. She had seen it countless times every year on this same day. And none of them involved anyone getting beheaded. "I'll take it that you were joking just now and didn't know the consequences of your words if you turn and walk away." Ralph immediately added, his gaze darkening the more. "What are you saying, Ralph?" Charlotte's voice trembled terribly and her wolf whimpered. "Don't you feel it? Don't you feel the magnetic connection between us?" Ralph grinded his teeth against each other angrily and snapped. "What the hell?! I don't know what you're feeling, but I'm sure as hell not feeling anything. So get the hell out of my face before I lose it!" "But–" Charlotte was about to continue insisting, her eyes wide in disbelief when she heard him sneer. "Even if you were my mate, I'd reject you without a second thought!" The situation had attracted more attention and the room had become more silent. Paige who was laughing at the far corner of the room heard Ralph's words and her eyes immediately shot up towards his direction. She frowned heavily seeing a certain person humbly standing in front of him, hands placed in her front and eyes meeting his. Everyone knew she had eyes for Ralph Handler. He also had his eyes on her and the only reason they were yet to get together with each other was because they knew the moon goddess would make them mates. But who would've thought that a mere gamma who happened to be there by accident would corner her when she went to get drinks from the counter and claim she was his mate?! She, Paige Turner, the most beautiful girl in The Quileute Pack and beyond was mated to a gamma? It was a horror movie she didn't wish to experience. "Are you alright, Paige?" Pamela asked worriedly, realizing her sister who was usually composed had gotten drunk at such an important ceremony. Paige waved her aside and stabilized her staggering body. "I'm fine. And I do think Charlotte Wallace may be in need of our help." Pamela who had just realized there was something happening in the middle of the room, nodded and got up. She'd never miss an opportunity to embarrass Charlotte. "I don't know what messed up fantasy you have in your head about me, but I assure you that it's never going to happen!" They heard Ralph growl as they got closer. "All I've ever done is treat you well. Yet, you run to my mate the second I told you about it. Is this why people say showing kindness to a dog is better than showing it to a fellow person?" Paige spat and took her position beside Ralph. Charlotte subconsciously took a step backward and looked around her. She wasn't very outspoken and the Turner family had done a lot of damage to her self esteem that she didn't think she was worthy to be around people who were of higher rank than her. The only reason she approached Ralph was because he was her mate. Who would've thought it'd turn every eye towards her direction. "She doesn't even look remorseful. Tell me, Charlotte, do you even have a heart trying to steal Paige's mate from her out of jealousy?" Pamela hissed, resisting the urge to poke her. "I'm saying the truth. Ralph, tell them you feel what I'm feeling. It's not a fantasy I'm making up in my head. Please tell them!" Charlotte desperately begged when she saw everyone's accusing eyes. "Why would I even lie to begin with?" Ralph glared at her. "Okay, Charlotte. Now you just sound pathetic and desperate. I know you think we don't treat you well enough despite everything my family has done for you. So you must've pictured how good it'd be having the son of an Alpha as your mate. That must be the reason." Paige anaylzed with a scoff. "Tell you what, why don't you you walk around the party a little longer. I'm sure you'd find your mate too, okay?" Pamela raised a brow. Charlotte forgot how to breath for a second. No, this wasn't happening. If she lost her mate to Paige, Paige would make her life a living hell. And so would Turner and… "Don't do this to me, Ralph. Please tell them we're–" Charlotte said and ran towards him. However, someone stepped out from behind Ralph and shoved her to the floor. "Stop your stupid manipulation. No one here is ever going to fall for it. The Turners are good people. If I had such an ungrateful person in my family, I'd have thrown you out myself!" Dean sneered, looking down at her angrily. Charlotte crawled backward and drew her knees to her chest, the corners of her eyes stinging in pain as tears fell freely. "I'd rather not do this, but you just tried to steal my sister and you're clearly not remorseful about it. And it's going to serve as a lesson for anyone covetting someone else's mate!" Pamela said and grabbed a glass of champagne from a passing waitress. She emptied it on Charlotte's head. Dean followed suit by grabbing the champagne bottle next to him. He uncorked it and emptied it on her head as well. Soon, other people their age did the same. Paige grabbed the pastry next to her and threw it at Charlotte. For the next two minutes, everyone in the room was either throwing food at her or pouring wine on her head. Charlotte buried her face in between her legs and cried her heart out. The overwhelming pain in her heart was hurting more than the embarrassment Pamela and Paige were causing her. Up on the staircase, a tall and lonely figure glanced down at the scene before he unhurriedly turned and began walking to the counter at the back.
