Chapter 2. RESCUED BY THE DEVIL

~YULIA The next time my eyes flew open, I was already in the wagon taking me to my doom. Memories of my k********g rushed back into my head and I wondered where I was. I worried for my mother too. What if they had also taken her? My mother and I swore to each other that we would never let Dimitri catch us again. He was a monster and he had abused me since I was a child. My mother and I had barely escaped him and we had been on the run for the past five years. "I hope that we are already on the course to Black Hound," Tharus called out to the coach. "Yes, we are on the path, my Lord," the coach answered quickly. I noticed that my hands were bound behind me, my legs were not an exception and I was also gagged. I was laying on the dirty wagon floor while the rest of my captors were seated on the chairs on both sides of the wall. I was very close to Tharus' feet. I was sure this was to discourage me from attempting another escape. It was not like I could even do anything. My only hope was in the Moon goddess. So I shut my eyes and began to pray to her. "I know I'm not a believer but you can help me just this once. Send me someone, anyone to save me, please. . ." I cried to her inwardly. I felt Tharus' hand caress my hair. "I keep wondering what Dimitri will do to you. It's going to be fun to watch," he mocked me. He must have figured out that I had regained consciousness. So I released a frustrated groan and Tharus only laughed at my misery. This made my heart burn with anger while my wolf twisted continuously. "You used to be his favourite, almost like his daughter and he would have given you all that he had but you let it go and ran away. You deserve all that is coming for you, Yulia," he threatened. As my body began to tremble, the wagon suddenly hit something and came to an abrupt stop. "What just happened?" Tharus called, waiting for the coach to answer. There was no response. His men stared at each other in confusion and all I wished for, was for them to leave so that I would get my chance to escape. From outside, the coach began to speak. "It seems we hit a lo— AAH—" Suddenly, a low growl rumbled in the air and everywhere went silent. There was no sign of the coach anymore. "Jones, James, John, go check it out!" Tharus ordered. "Kill whatever stands in our way." I swallowed hard. This was when I realised that things had gotten serious. I helplessly watched the men as they stepped out. "The coach is gone," One of them announced. "We'll try finding him," Another suggested. I could tell that Tharus was getting impatient as he waited. He kept tapping his fingers on the empty seat beside him. "Just fix the problem immediately!" He snapped. "Guys, I think I found the coach. . . He's dead," the last man announced. My heart skipped two beats and as if on cue, a series of roars and growls that sounded way too loud, powerful and more dangerous than any werewolf I had ever come across before— took over the air. The screams of the three men followed and silence immediately replaced them. That was when true fear seized me and I started finding ways to escape. I spotted a dagger lying on the floor and I figured that it must have belonged to one of the three men. "James? John?" Tharus called but there was no answer. He sighed. "I guess I have to do the dirty job myself." He rose to his feet and jumped out of the wagon which had an opening from behind. I instantly used the opportunity to grab the knife by turning my back to it since my hands were bound behind me. As I grabbed the knife and began to cut myself free, the same roars came again and I heard Tharus screaming. My wolf jumped as I gasped. Tharus was not one to easily get scared. If he was this freaked then it meant whatever he was facing was deadly, perhaps, even a monster. My body started trembling even harder as I fought with the knife. Fresh tears joined the dried ones on my cheeks and eventually, I set myself free. I pulled my gag off and held the knife tight against my hands. As I jumped out of the wagon, the first thing I noticed was the thick fog that was hindering proper vision. Then I also saw that light was slowly sipping into the sky. Yet it did not stop me from moving cautiously through the fog. I had just placed a foot forward when something moved fast past me. I gasped and turned in the direction but I saw nothing. I tried to move again when another blur moved past me. My heart began to pound heavily as my body trembled violently. "Who's there?" I called as I pointed my dagger out. The blurs started jumping past me, as if they were playing a sickening game with me. As I looked closely, I realised that there were three of whatever the monsters that they were. "What do you want from me?" I screamed. "Stop hiding like cowards and face me!" I added. My wolf came alive and I felt its power grow strong. I was shaking visibly by now; I was beyond terrified but I was not going to allow the bastards see my fear. "Face me!" I stated. Suddenly, they stopped jumping past me and the fog began to clear slowly. The first thing I saw was silver hair, shimmering in the early morning light like the moon itself had descended upon me in all its glory. Was this the Moon goddess? I soon realised that there were indeed three of them like I had guessed. The fog continued to clear and I registered their faces. My mouth and dagger instantly dropped to the ground as my eyes beheld beauty I had never seen before in all my werewolf years. I was bewitched by their beauty and I froze, unable to break free. They had to be the devil in flesh and bone. It was not helping that they had identical faces as well as the same face with the man I met earlier in the corridor. Devils! "This is not a good way to say thank you for saving your life," one of them spoke in a playful tone and his voice made my insides dance in a dangerous but exciting way. The fog cleared enough to reveal their chests and I almost lost my sight from the beauty. The one who had spoken attempted to approach me when I suddenly backed away. The move was enough to make me regain my senses and I began to stagger back, in an attempt to escape. "Stay away from me. . ." I whispered breathlessly, obviously still over taken by shock. Someone I used to know once told me that the prettier they looked on the outside, the uglier they were on the inside. The one who had spoken before scoffed. "Hey, I'm just trying to help," he said and kept coming. I knew red flags when I saw them. And this was screaming red and black flags! "Hell no! I'm not going to let you bewitch me and turn me into your loyal concubine or worse a frog, when no one is looking!" I screamed. My captors were taken aback by my accusations and I took the open chance. I turned and made a run for it. "Wait! Come back!" Two voices screamed. "Let her go," the third one said in a calmer voice. I was tempted to stop and see which of them had spoken but I willed myself to stay focused and not fall for their charms. On the other hand, I had succeeded in escaping Dimitri again. The goddess must have answered my prayers. I sighed as my next move popped in my head as much as I dreaded it. It was time to run away from this town again.
