CHAPTER TWO   Silence was all that reigned in the background and the more I looked at his eyes, the faster my heart beat. Tension clung heavily in the air, the blood rush in my ears getting loud leaving no space to think clearly. I didn’t understand what it was about him that made me feel this scared. The feeling that ran inside me was coated with nothing but fear.   “You know you could have asked politely Lucian,” Peggy came to my rescue, arms crossed. A small shudder left my lips for no apparent reason.   So the Hispanic guy was Lucian? His eyes were still on me and not once did he bat an eyelid towards Peggy. His jaw was drawn tight and lips pulled up to a thin line stretching all the way to the edge of his rather luscious lips. Something told me he didn’t really like me which of course should not have bothered me in any way but it still did. Why would he even dislike me though when we only just met? And why was I feeling this afraid of him when we had barely interacted? The only thing that my subconscious screamed was for me to run away from him but I could not move my feet as his eyes held me in a trance.   “I’m not talking to you Turner,” he used Peggy’s last name, and even then he still didn’t look at her.   His cold gaze was spine chilling and not the kind of chilling that made you feel like you were completely frozen. No, this kind of chilling was different as it made me feel every fiber in my body so much aware of him and the dangerous vibe emanating from deep within him. What a weird way to feel about someone you only just met for the first time. I wanted to turn around and walk away but none of my body parts seemed to function properly. We were saved by the loud sound of the warning bell resounding in the hallway, everyone already dashing to their classes. I quickly broke the stare, locked my locker, picked my book on the floor and scurried away with Peggy and her two friends on my heels. Once I was a safe distance away, I slowed down to catch my breath. When I sneaked a glance back, Lucan was standing, his gaze following me. The anger in his look was what I could not understand. Just what had I done to piss him off that much?   “Why does it feel like I just crossed paths with death itself?” I questioned with one hand on my heart.   “It’s the Lucian fever hun. Everybody who comes that close to Lucian catches it,” Leon explained.   “Now you see what I’m talking about,” I nodded at Peggy’s words. That was one scary yet very good-looking guy right there. He was clearly that type of guy in novels that is so damn bad and yet very attractive. He was the type to make a girl want to believe that somehow, he had this insane amount of goodness in him only for her.   In truth, my meeting with Lucian didn’t really resonate with how urgently Peggy had sounded back in math class. Sure the guy seemed like he could snap someone’s head off without a second thought but still, that didn’t explain why he seemed to literally hate me and why Peggy would make me promise to stay away from him. Maybe I was just overthinking all of this because I was the nervous new girl in a totally different place far away from home. After all, I was the girl from the city and well, not everyone was going to like me. I had not really cared about that in the past and I won’t start caring about it now. At the end of the day, it didn’t matter whether people liked or did not like me. In truth, I was not really used to having friends because back then I had Roman with me. I was not sure I needed them either now but being a little friendly would not hurt, right?   “I need to get to Spanish class. I’ll meet you after that and please don’t get in trouble. You’ll have no one to protect you,” Peggy said. Why would I even want protection? It was not like some mafia gang was after me or something.   “You are forgetting she has me,” Leon pointed at himself.   “Yeah, you don’t really count Leon,” Andrew chuckled lightly as Leon rolled his eyes, clearly not offended.   “You are just jealous I’m sharing a class with Faith,” Leon bit back.   Andrew flipped Leon before he and Peggy walked into Spanish class. Leon and I managed to make it to Biology on time which thankfully was the last class of the day. I sat next to Leon, trying to pretend like the rest of the class was not watching me with curious almost pitiful looks.   “Fair warning though, Lucian might be in this class too,” he spoke slyly.   “Just great,” I mumbled.   “Don’t worry, as long as you don’t get paired up with him then you are actually safe,” he shrugged, placing his notebook on the table before he began flipping through the textbook.   “P-Paired up for what?” I questioned, feeling the first hint of dread filling up in my stomach.   “For the take home quiz. Mr. Dawson keeps reshuffling partners every two weeks. He then gives each pair a quiz on Monday which is then submitted on Wednesday of the following week, marked on Thursday and then the pairs get to know their results on Friday. Lucky for you today is reshuffle Monday so hold your breath and cross your fingers that you don’t end up with Lucian,” He said. His attempt to make me feel better were not exactly working well right now. Working with partners, especially someone I didn’t even know did not sit well with me.   “I’m a hundred percent sure I won’t end up with Lucian,” I mean really, what are the chances?   The teacher, Mr. Dawson, was a short bulky man with a slight stubble showing on his chin and something akin to a permanent scowl dancing on his face. Thankfully, he didn’t bother to acknowledge my presence as a new student like the other teachers. After offering his greetings to the class he began reading the list of new pairs. I held my breath but when Leon got paired up with another girl, my hopes began to crumble slowly. Lucian had not been mentioned and neither had I, yet there were only few students to go so far. My heart was slowly picking speed, every beat sounding an earthquake against my ear as I crossed my fingers, praying I would not end up paired with that boy.   “Patience Whitmore with Lucian Black,” I released a shaky breath of relief. At least I was not going to be having nightmares anytime soon.   “And finally we have Faith Bishop with Alexander Bane. I’ll let you have the rest of the lesson free so you can all have a head start in your assignments,”    “See, I told you I would not end up with Lucian,” A smile popped on my lips, my heart rate slowing down to normal.   “I doubt that makes any difference now,” his face was slightly paled, worry easing its way inside my mind.   “What is that supposed to mean?” I really didn’t like the look on Leon’s face. I know we had only known each other a couple of hours but the look on his face warned me enough. Did I get somebody worse that Lucian? Was this school full of bullies or what?   “Turn around. You see the brunette beside Lucian? Now that is Alexander Bane,” his voice was full of dread.   “That’s the other guy from Lucian’s clique or group or whatever,” Realization slapped me hard on the face, “Well as soon as the two weeks are over I’ll be rid of him. What could possibly go wrong within two weeks?” I laughed it off. Unbeknown to me, a lot would change during this time and somehow, I wished someone had given me a head start.   “Come on now students. I don’t want to repeat myself. Off to your new partners,” He clapped his hands once as students began scrambling to their partners.    “Good luck Leon,” I whispered pulling myself to a stand.   “I think you are the one who needs all the luck,” he whispered back.   I nodded as I made my way to the back of the class. I stood in front of Alexander’s seat unsure of what I was supposed to say or do. He didn’t seem to acknowledge my presence as Lucian kept on whispering something to him, his jaw drawn really tight. Finally, they both looked up and when Lucian’s eyes met mine they seemed to be full of anger. He picked his book and stormed out of the class.   “Hi. I’m Faith,” I worked up a smile.   “I know exactly who you are, Faith Bishop,” Alexander spat my name in total disdain. His eyes wore the same rage as his friend and it made me begin to question if I had unknowingly done something to tick them off. But if I did, Peggy would probably pointed it out already, right?   “And I’m sensing you don’t like the fact that we got paired up for the assignment,”   “At least you are smart enough to know that even though very dumb enough to come to this town. Look Faith. I don’t like that you are here in Woodcave and I definitely don’t really like anything that has to do with you or your family. So if I were you, I would pack my bags and disappear to where the bloody hell I came from as fast as I appeared here,” and just like Lucian he stood and left the class.   Wow! Talk about being left standing in class with everyone’s gaze literally burning holes on your skin right on your first day of school. If this was not second-hand embarrassment, then I had no idea what was. As Peggy drove us home that evening, I could not stop myself from wondering what the hell was wrong. Why would someone hate me with so much venom when we had barely met? They knew nothing about me or my family and yet they had the audacity to hate me like that. It just didn’t make any sense. Or could it be maybe it was something that my grandma’s family here did? I was going to give it a couple of days and if this persisted, I was going to have to talk to grandma.
