Chapter 2: Lost Cause (2) *** Five years later… “Careful…” A woman, obviously an employee at the company quickly slumped her shoulders and buried her head in her desk work, making sure her employer wouldn’t see her. “Why did you hide?” The new recruit asked, he was a young man that seemed about high school graduate age. His questioning look made it obvious he truly didn’t understand anything. “The boss… Noah… he doesn’t like employees looking at him as he passes down the hallways…” The co-worker replied in a nearly methodical sounding voice, as if she had explained that same thing hundreds of times before. “So?” The new recruit was a bit confused by the co-worker didn’t offer him anymore information than he’d already been given. “He’s in a constant bad mood… that’s what she wanted to say and if you want to keep your job you better not bother him.” Another male co-worker explained as he moved closer to the two, the woman was pretending to work although she was holding the documents on the wrong side, obviously not actually reading them. “I see…” the new recruit could do nothing but agree, he didn’t yet know anything about this company or how things worked there. All he knew was to keep his head low and do his job well so that he wouldn’t lose this opportunity as well… Noah’s POV: ‘As a Beta in this world that constantly looks down on me… I’m always left with few choices to make… The cards I’d been given were losing ones from the very start, yet I managed to make a name for myself regardless of that…’ He thought to himself while sitting down at his desk. By his side his secretary Ruby brought him a cup of coffee without sugar or milk. It was the typical way her employer drank his coffee as of the last few years. It didn’t matter if I had to trample over others to achieve my goals… I would do it with pleasure if it meant I could step just one inch closer to what I wanted… what I truly desired… People meant nothing to me, regardless whether they were Betas like myself, Omegas or even Alphas like the man I killed Robin… It didn’t matter… or so I thought it didn’t… yet… after I wanted the life fade out from his eyes, his body stopping to move, I felt a sense of dread… or regret… for the first time in my life I felt like I had done something I shouldn’t have… I was only doing it to protect myself… he knew my secret… he said he wouldn’t use it against me yet could I really trust him? Who’s to say he wasn’t lying to me?! I did what I had to… I want to believe that… yet whenever I close my eyes I can still see his face… Robin has continued to haunt my every waking hour ever since his death. Even when I’m sleeping I still see him, inevitably he is always with me… Noah’s heart had sunken… He truly didn’t understand why it was Robin that he felt such peculiar emotions towards. The only man that’s ever made him question himself… He was the only one… “Sir… Should I bring him in?” Ruby asked, her tone sounded soft yet stern, her beautiful appearance was that of someone with a frivolous nature, yet you could tell she was a woman with years of experience in this particular field as an executive assistant. “Bring who in? I wasn’t listening…” Noah admitted, his cold voice sounding sincere and annoyed at the same time. ‘I don’t really want to look at anyone at all if I can help it…’ He thought to himself, but knew his work was inevitably, he was never the type of man to try and avoid responsibility. “The new assistant candidates… since I am going to be on paternity leave for the next year… You’ll need to decide soon sir…” Ruby spoke with a bit of a worried sounding voice. She didn’t mean to pressure her employer, yet she couldn’t help but be a bit stressed while thinking that the man wasn’t paying attention to her words. “……..” Noah gave an indifferent glance at his secretary. ‘I remember… she’s pregnant, although she mentioned it a while ago I put it in the back of my mind… I can’t afford to be without an assistant for that long…’ He thought to himself as he gestured with his hand. “Bring them in.” Noah spoke in a clearly disinterested voice. What was unavoidable was unavoidable, he couldn’t just ignore the issue. “Yes, sir.” Ruby quickly nodded her head as she went outside. Soon after three young men entered the room. Neither of them seemed particularly interesting at first glance. Indifferently as ever Noah looked each one of them over and then at their resumes, they all seemed to be from good backgrounds and good starting positions. Neither seemed too qualified however… There was one thing that struck Noah as particular, it was the set of eyes that looked back at him with a certain amount of passion… “……….” Noah didn’t know why that person looked at him like that but also couldn’t help but return it with a simple glance. “Have they gone through a trial period?” He asked while turning to Ruby, somehow he acted as if neither of the three men in the room existed and only spoke to her like a human being. “Yes, sir, I’ve concluded they are all suitable for the position. It is your final say in the matter…” Ruby replied without much hesitation. She too didn’t seem to be concerned for the three men’s presence and disregarded them just as much as her employer did. She too wouldn’t show sympathy for them, two of which would definitely go home without a job that day and only one that would stay and even then it wasn’t certain that person would succeed in their job either… “Then Akira… welcome to the team. Ruby will give you all the details about my schedule and further instruct you on important matters.” Noah gave a somewhat fake greeting as if he was trying too hard. The two men that didn’t hear their names being called out were visibly distressed yet neither made a single noise to rebel against the other’s final say in the matter. Silently they walked away being escorted by Ruby who was as calm as before and simply offered them half assed words of encouragement and reassurance which was more than likely all she could do at that moment for them. Even though it wasn’t in her job description she didn’t intent to be far too cold to the men, although she certainly didn’t care for them much. “Why did you decide to join the company?” Noah asked, his voice was steady yet he could feel a certain amount of tension in the air. It was obviously being emitted by the man still in the room. Akira’s pupils dilated as he focused his attention on his new employer. “To take revenge on you sir…” Akira said as a smile crept up on the corners of his lips. “It’s been a long time after all…” He continued, his voice becoming different than before. No… it wasn’t the voice of any average high school student… in fact it was much deeper as if the man was around the same age that Noah was… “Revenge for what exactly?” Noah didn’t act dumb, he genuinely had no idea what the man meant by his words. Yet his heard felt unsettled, he could hear it, Robin’s voice was sounding ever so clearly though that young man’s mouth, yet that wasn’t possible was it? “Revenge for killing me.” Akira replied, the small smile that the corners of his eyes hid, was nothing in comparison to the obvious smile his eyes clearly showed. He was happy to be there, even happier to be chosen by the man he truly loved. Yet there was something psychotic about him, something rather abnormal… Although Noah could clearly feel it, he didn’t want to believe it… ‘I must be losing my mind… I not only see him everywhere but now I can hear him too… Robin’s existence has truly… been edged into my conscious and subconscious equally…’ Noah thought to himself, he was at a loss at what to do or say. He didn’t want to lash out, so he simply asked. “How could I have killed you? You’re quite obviously there…” “Sir… you still can’t recognize me?” Akira asked, tilting his head to the side in a confused but self satisfied manner. “Well… I do suppose the various plastic surgeries I had to go through were worth it… after all, I do look much different, yet I should suit your tastes much more now than before, right?” He questioned. That reminded Noah of an old conversation he had with Robin… where they discussed what type of person the man dated. “Your name… it’s Akira, right?” “Right now yes… although before it used to be Robin.” Akira admitted, his calm voice was unsettling to say the least. The entire room felt like it had been filled with cold air. It was impossible to ignore him any longer. Noah stood up from his chair, with a few steps towards the man he asked once more. “You’re Robin…?” That question seemed rather odd yet he didn’t care, he needed to know whether he was making things up inside his mind or hearing the truth. Was this real? Could the dead really be living? Although Noah was completely certain the other’s heartbeat had stopped, could there have been some incredible miracle that brought him back to life? Or was this some kind of sick joke thought up by some unsavory character that hates him? It was confusing, unsettling, difficult to understand… “I wonder what I’d have to do to prove it’s really me? Should I remind you of the way you killed me? From the special bar we were in, to the private room, I even remember the waitress had a light blue apron on her, the drink I had was very distasteful as well… Oh, it was all because I exposed the fact you were a Beta that day… I probably should have kept my mouth shut but oh well what can you do now?” Akira calmly recollected the events that happened over five years ago, so clearly as if they had just happened a few minutes before. “It really is you…” Noah remarked, it was no longer a question but rather a statement. At that moment the other smiled once more even more wickedly than ever before. “Yes, and as I said I have to pay you back with interest for what you did to me… You see it wasn’t easy to get here-” Before Akira could finish his sentence, the other man had grabbed him. Akira was prepared to defend himself yet the other didn’t intent to harm him at all. “You’re alive… I’m glad…” Noah said, those words seemed to be filled with emotion. Unlike his usual calculating, scheming and business like monotone voice, his tone now held sincerity and maybe even affection, he was genuinely glad the man wasn’t dead. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…” He apologized, maybe for the first time in his life ever since he was a child. He was a prideful man, and one that never admitted to his own mistakes, but at that moment he was profusely sorry… ‘Why are you apologizing to me now?’ Akira wondered to himself, he had just revealed his true identity to the man. He had just waltz into his office and openly declared his intentions of extracting punishment to the man. There was this urge to question the man that was tightly embracing him yet he couldn’t. “I’m sorry… I’m really sorry…” Noah continued repeating as if he didn’t care if anyone were to hear him outside his office doors. Regret, despair, loss… he’d experienced all these emotions throughout the years and yet now he had a chance at redemption, that’s what it felt like to him. Akira could do nothing but look down at the man that had his face buried in his chest. Snot, drool and tears were wetting Akira’s jacket he’d picked out that day. Noah… the icy man that never really showed any amount of interest in another human being was now being openly vulnerable with him. But why? It didn’t make sense, what was happening? He couldn’t understand it but… ‘It’s not fair… how can I take my revenge on you… if you hold me so tenderly while crying?’ Akira felt his heart was about to break. Feelings were easy to form but difficult to take away. Althougjh he seeked revenge on the man, he couldn’t bring himself to do it, he wanted to scare him at the very least but now he just wanted to reassure him and dry out the tears that were falling down the man’s face…
