Chapter 1
Lilah I curled myself up on my bed as the tears slid slowly down my cheeks. I didn't want to be here. I didn't want to move packs. I didn't want a new step-dad or the step-sister that came with him. My life was good before we moved here. I had friends, soccer and my school. I knew there was a possibility of my Mum finding her true mate but didn't expect her to find him on the other side of the country! We finally made the move to the Red Shadow Pack a month ago and to say they were less than welcoming is putting it lightly. Emma, my new step-sister, was perfect. The popular girl. Emma was a year older than me and she was the ideal she-wolf. Perfect golden hair, a perfect tall figure, perfect clothes, everything. There wasn't a girl at our new school who didn't envy her, or a guy who didn't lust over her. My new step-dad, Darren, was nice. He was quiet but he made my mum happy, so that is all that matters. "Lilah! Darren is ready to take you guys to school, are you ready?" Mum called from down the stairs. I wiped the tears from my cheeks and checked myself in the mirror. I wasn't too blotchy - by the time we got to school my freckled cheeks should look back to normal. I quickly threw my long brown hair up in a clip and picked up my bag. "Are you seriously wearing that on your first day at the new school?" Emma snickered as I walked into the kitchen to grab my lunchbox. I saw Darren glare at his daughter from across the room. "What is wrong with what I'm wearing?" I asked, assessing the high-waisted blue jeans, converse and black crop single I had chosen. Dont let her bother you. Violet, my wolf, reassured me. It was nice to always have someone in your corner. "Well, I certainly wouldn't wear it. I mean, it's only your first day once." Emma shrugged before walking outside to get into the car. Emma was wearing a short pink skirt with a purple tube top and silver heels. I would never, in my wildest dreams, ever wear something like that. It is just not my style. She looked amazing though. Pity she's dumb as a doorknob. Violet added. I hid the smirk, Violet is like the more confident version of me. I avoid confrontation whenever possible. Violet thrives off of it. "Thanks for lunch." I said to Mum as I shoved the lunchbox in my bag and followed Darren and Emma out to the car. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach making me queasy with nerves. "Have the best day Lilah! Good luck with your new lessons!" Mum called out to me. I had been doing advanced Maths and Chemistry at my old school in Silver Crest Pack, hopefully what they offer here is something similar. I jumped into the back seat of the car as Emma had already claimed the front passenger seat. I didn't mind sitting in the back though, fewer people could see me back here. Emma talked the whole way to school. Warning me not to talk to her within the school grounds and to stay away from her friends. I just nodded. I had no intention of talking to her anyway. I don't think that would be beneficial for me. Darren dropped us off in the carpark of the school and drove off. I stood there watching Emma strut towards the school doors without me. The school was a lot bigger than my old school. The building was at least three stories from what I could tell on the outside. The grounds were immaculate and lush. I felt intimidated by the building alone. I took a deep breath to try and settle my gitters. Guess this was it. Better get it over and done with. You are smart, pretty and nice. They just have to get to know you. Violet assured me. I really did try to believe her. I thanked Violet and assured her we would go for a run tonight so she could stretch her legs. I walked through the front doors of the school and felt everyone's eyes on me. Their glares. Their sneers. Their hushed comments as I walked past. "Emma!!!" three girls rushed past me to my step-sister who was at her locker just inside the doors. I hadn't even noticed she was there. The stack of books I was holding scattered across the floor, earning me groans of frustration from the other students entering the school behind me. One girl kicked my leg out from under me as she walked past. I fell forward suddenly, slamming my wrist on the floor. A sharp jolt of pain ran up my arm so I closed my eyes to hide the pain. She just laughed and kept walking. What a great start to the day. Violet growled. "Bloody hell, are people serious?!" A red-headed girl shrieked, bending down to help me up. "These people are such animals!" I couldn't help but giggle. "We are part animal." I retorted, chuckling. Violet appreciated my joke even if no one else was listening. "Doesn't give them the right to act like it." the girl answered me. Many did not approve of my Mum and I moving packs for a second-chance mate bond, so I was surprised this girl was helping me at all. "I'm Ally." The girl introduced herself once we had collected my books and moved out of the way. She smiled genuinely at me. "Lilah." I answered back. "I thought so. I had heard Emma's new step-sister was starting this year. I connected the dots." Ally giggled. I couldn't help liking her. "Don't say that too loud!" I whispered, "I am under strict instructions not to talk to her in any way or form." I continued. Ally feigned shock. " You're better off staying away from that group honestly." Ally smiled at me. "Let's see what classes we have together?" Ally put her hand out for my timetable. I gave it to her completely confused by where all the classes were anyway. "Advanced Maths and Chemistry? Wow!" Ally complimented, impressed. "I did them in my old school, they must have gotten my transcript." I replied, shrugging my shoulders. "We have art and English together!" Ally squealed. "We have PE together, of course, our whole year level and the seniors have it together. Something about school connectiveness." Ally added causally. That meant I would have to be in a class with Emma. She was going to love that. Violet rolled her eyes. Ally gave me directions to my first class and told me to meet her in English and we could spend lunch together. I walked down the hall as fast as possible and away from the sharp stares of my fellow classmates. I walked past Emma and her posse. "I can't believe she is actually your step-sister now." One of her friends, Piper, whispered (loud enough for everyone around her to hear). I had met her a few days ago when the girls got ready at our house before a party. She wasn''t any more welcoming then either. "She doesn't even look like you!" Another replied. I stifled a giggle. "They aren't actually related, Sarah!" Piper groaned in frustration. "Urgh, she's such a drain!" Emma groaned while shutting her locker. I kept walking. This was nothing new.
