Survived

The morning light filtered into the room through the window and Cassandra tried to open her eyes despite the throbbing ache she was feeling in her head. It felt like some heavy metal had been placed on her head and she struggled to open her eyes. Her eyes fluttered open after so much effort but she soon shut them in reaction to the blinding bright light that filled the room. Her body was on fire and all she could feel was pain as she wriggled under the soft fabric used to cover her. "She's awake." She heard a voice squeal and she tried to open her eyes again, squinting at first to adjust to the light before opening them fully. She gasped at what she saw as her eyes roamed about the room. Everything was white, the walls, floors, and even the bed she laid on. It made Cassandra wonder where she was. "Go call the doctor." She heard another voice say and she glanced in the direction it came from. There, a broad-faced man with a flat nose stared back at her as he stood beside the bed. "You're fine now." He smiled, reaching out to smoothen her hair and Cassandra flinched from his touch. She had never seen him before so it was all too strange to be in the same room with him. With a smile, the man opened his mouth to speak but soon stopped when the door opened and a man dressed in white, accompanied by another woman in a floral dress, walked into the room. The man dressed in white walked up to the bed, leaning in to feel her temperature with his palm as he placed it over her forehead. He glanced at the life monitor and Cassandra watched him in confusion, wondering what was going on. "How's she, doc?" The woman in a floral dress asked and the doctor turned to her with a smile. "She's fine," he told them. "Though her body is weak, she should be fine after a day's rest. She's a strong girl." The doctor turned to Cassandra, smiling into her face but Cassandra's brows only knitted together in further confusion. It was clear she was in a hospital but why? She wasn't a fan of hospitals because of the nauseating smell of medicine and drips so why was she here and why was she feeling so much pain in her body? Who were these people and why did they look so concerned about her? "Thank God." The woman in the floral dress, breathed, tears streaming down her face as she hugged the broad-faced man standing beside her. The man wrapped his arm around her shoulder, smiling happily. It was clear he was also relieved. Squeezing her eyes shut, Cassandra tried to scrutinize her memory in a bid to figure out how she had ended up in a hospital. She remembered being at Mr. King's mansion talking with Hunter and Hunter being the baddie he was, had yelled at her as usual, and had walked out on her, leaving her all alone. The throbbing in Cassandra's head increased as she racked her brain to figure what was going on and a loud groan escaped her lips, making her wince in pain. "Is she okay, doc?" The woman asked, releasing the man she had been hugging and walking to sit beside Cassandra on the bed. "She is," the doctor assured, scribblings some words on the paper he was holding. Paying no attention to them, Cassandra continued to think, trying to remember how she had landed in a hospital. She could still remember being with Tom, her lovely puppy and only friend, then being with her mother and then. . . A jolting pain filled her heart as realization dawned on her, causing her to remember the ugly incident of the accident. Mom! "Mom!" She croaked out in pain, her eyes welling up as the event of the accident replayed in her head. There had been a red car and the car had knocked theirs out of the road. Her mother had tried to protect her but had gone still in her arms. There had been lots of blood on her palms and it had been so scary. "Mom." Cassandra cried again, wriggling in the bed as she tried to sit up. "Mom!" Alarmed by her display, the woman reached out to hold her but Cassandra kept thrashing on the bed, screaming for her mother to come. "It's okay, baby." She heard the woman say, holding her by the arms as she tried to calm her down but Cassandra kept crying hysterically for her mother. The doctor moved closer to the bed with an injection in his hand and he injected Cassandra immediately, making her slowly relax before falling into a deep sleep afterward. "It's okay, Annie." Jordan walked to the woman in a floral dress who was staring at Cassandra's sleeping figure and he tried to comfort her but she kept sobbing quietly. "Will she be fine, doctor?" Annie asked for the umpteenth time that morning and the doctor nodded in assurance, his face breaking into a smile as he tried to comfort the woman. "I injected her with a sedative to calm her down. I guess she remembers the accident. This sedative will enable her to get the rest she needs. You don't have to worry. She's absolutely fine." Annie sagged in relief and her husband massaged her shoulders gently. She stared at the peaceful face of her niece, sad that such misfortune would befall her at such a tender age. She wondered how the ten-year-old girl would react when they finally broke the news of her mother's death to her. "How about the bite?" Jordan asked the doctor, his eyes fixated on the bandage on Cassandra's wrist. "I cleaned the wound with some antiseptic and changed the dressing. It is clear some wild animal did that to her because of its fang mark but I've sterilized the injured area so she should be fine." The doctor explained and the couple exchanged puzzled glances. "A wild animal?" Jordan asked and the doctor nodded. "That's the only explanation I can give. Some creature sank its teeth into your niece's skin. I guess it went away when she passed out." "That's strange," Annie muttered and her husband nodded in support. "You can say that but we're glad she's alive. The bite shouldn't pose a problem." The doctor assured and the couple nodded. "Thanks, doc." They chorused. "You guys should get some rest now. You don't have to worry any longer. She's out of danger." The doctor told them as he turned to go and the couple finally left after some moment of just staring into Cassandra's sleeping face.
